Konami posts modest revenue, double-digit profit growth

Publisher's holiday-quarter results indicate 3.4 percent sales growth to nearly $900M; income grows 22.7 percent to $108.9M.

As the holder of one of the most heavily anticipated franchises for the PlayStation 3, Konami is sure to feel a pleasant boost to its 2009 fiscal results when Metal Gear Solid 4 finally lands later this year. However, even without a new installment in the MGS franchise, the publisher continues to build on strong first half of the year results, posting marginal 3.4 percent net revenue gains of 95,987 million yen (about $899.8 million) for the holiday quarter ended December 31.

Although revenue was only slightly up, Konami saw a significantly more sizable boost in profit. Net income for the publisher's third quarter was 11,622 million yen (about $108.9 million), a 22.7 percent climb over the same period of time last year. For the first nine months of Konami's fiscal 2008, the publisher has netted income of 17,910 million yen (about $167.9 million) on 229,730 million yen revenue (about $2.1 billion), an 8.1 percent increase over the same period of time last year.

Digital entertainment led Konami's earnings for the first three quarters of its fiscal year, up 9 percent year over year to 141,140 million yen (about $1.3 billion). Sports games played the most significant role in Konami's third-quarter performance, with the publisher calling out World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008, Jikkyou Pawafuru Major League 2, and Jikkyou Pawafuru Puroyakyu 14 as top sellers in Europe and Japan. Konami also said that the Dance Dance Revolution franchise continues to sell well in North America.

Laying out its projections for its full fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2008, Konami expects revenues to be up 5.3 percent year over year to 295,000 million yen (about $2.7 billion). Likewise, Konami expects to continue its double-digit gains in income, projecting profits to rise 12.9 percent to 18,300 million yen ($171.5 million) for the full fiscal year.

Why is an xbox magazine less credible than any other magazine? All magazines just state what they know, and if a playstation magazine said , for instance, that mass effect was being ported to the ps3, itd still be a credible source in my opinion. Apparantly that means that HamsterOfFury's article isnt credible since it came from the ps3 section of that website. Oh and xbox magazine also knew that the "ps3 exclusive" devil may cry 4 was coming to 360 months before anyone else did. And I bet that sony fanboys were denying that too, and look what happened? The point is that this isnt rumor as you believe dragonpuppy. Its a fact. It happened for DMC4 and its going to happen again.

LOL and we see blogs asking why GS is falling. It because this stuff is all they care about. Their one sided and one minded. You know what their trying to ask is this article. You know what their trying to push. And the main answer now from Konami is NNNN OOOOO! Not now, and not latter! like your thinking. So who care sif you have to buy a opened eded machine with better next gen power. I mean when you really think about it? Is their something bad about that???

A seemingly unbiased article from January can be found here: http://gaming.monstersandcritics.com/ps3/news/article_1384409.php/ which states that Konami's spokesman says there are no plans for MGS4 on the 360. It's a bit more of an unbiased source than a console magazine AND the site gives the rather excellent quote:
"The spinning waterwheel on the churning Metal Gear Solid 4 rumour mill has spun so hard during the New Year that it has now shaken its self loose and shot off down the river of fanboy denial… while gaming Web site XboxFamily watches on forlornly and wipes a healthy dose of egg from its face. "
Which is a good piece of writing. Heh.

Yes...the rest of us are going to believe something coming from an XBOX magazine. Please get a more creditable source before you try to prove rumors.

U may be surprised to learn that MGS4 is coming to 360. This is a quote from the September 2007 issue of official xbox magazine: "It looks like Sony's worst nightmare is coming to fruition, as the Mole has learned from a bankable source that Konami WILL be bringing Metal Gear Solid 4 to the xbox 360. A separate, non-Kojima led team will handle the port, which will ship a few months after the PS3 version."

I think MGS4 will be a big hit. But if it doesn't sell on PS3 I doubt they'll make it for 360 and if they did it won't be for another year or so. In my opinion if its not a hit than port it to ps2. It'll make big bucks. SInce PS2s still a hit.(the graphics of course, dummed down though.)

Great News! I dig on Konami, though funny enough, I'm not a very big fan of Metal Gear games. I'd personallly rather see a little more emphasis or attention on the likes of Suikoden and Silent Hill, but as long as they keep making great games, I'll keep supporting them.

Totally agree about a new Suikoden. After V I just want more!!!

Oh and don't forget the MGS/Zone of the Enders/Silent Hill etc.....

Excellent news, Konami is one of my favorites! Now, they just need to use some of their nice new profits to make a new Suikoden game.

that is good news. lets just see how big the profit is after MGS4 comes out

    Posted Feb 6, 2008 4:25 am PT

That's good news considering that MGS4 must have soaked up an unimaginable sum of money, when MGS4 is released their profits will increase twofold.

MGS4 is sure to sell a minimum of 5 mil copies on PS3, so i wouldn't worry about "profit".

@diablobasher:He never said he was going to make it for the 360 you wrong on that LOL,but he did say it needed to sell a million to make a profit which it will.

In japan alone it will sell that much all games now and days need to sell a million just to make there money back.Let me ask yall fanboys since yall call us fanboys so much for not having a 360 if the 360 have all these games why do yall want MGS4 so much.....

Well, Kojima already said it, even if all the fanboys forgot. If it doesn't sell to a profit on the PS3, then he will be knocking out a 360 version to make up the money.
