Celebrity Sports Showdown comes to Wii

EA's latest minigame compilation squares off singers and sports stars in 12 activities, including inner-tubing, fighter-jet racing, and dodgeball.

Gamers around the world have already thrilled to big-name crossovers such as X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Aliens Versus Predator, and Lakers Versus Celtics and the NBA Playoffs. This holiday season, gamers will be able to add Sugar Ray Leonard versus Nelly Furtado to that list, courtesy of Electronic Arts.

As reported by MTV News, EA will bring Celebrity Sports Showdown to Nintendo's Wii this holiday season. Developed by the team behind last year's EA Playground, the game is replete with celebrities of the stage and sports arena, with MTV calling out singers Keith Urban, Fergie, Nelly Furtado, and LeAnn Rimes, as well as sports stars Sugar Ray Leonard, Kristi Yamaguchi, Paul Pierce, Reggie Bush, and Mia Hamm.

The minigames on offer will be as gallimaufry as the names attached to the project. Sports thus far revealed include inner-tubing, fighter-jet racing, slalom skiing, dodgeball, smash badminton, curling, canoeing, and volleyball. The pint-sized sports games have reportedly been modeled after Nintendo's ubiquitous Wii Sports pack-in, and gamers will use the Wii Remote to control the various minigames in a variety of different ways.

Celebrity Sports Showdown will accommodate up to four players, and MTV notes that it is "meant to be played by a group of people using a single Wii," indicating that it will lack online multiplayer functionality.

    The sad thing is these game are made for nongamers who don't know quility. Another party game with no use of Miis. These game should always include the ability to play as Mii's and online play.

    Sounds horrible. Has-been celebrities, media wh*res, peoples career's on the downslide needing a popularity boost. And What no Britney or Paris? The games sound like they'll be crap, too. Will there be updates avalible to download new characters? Maybe limited releases so you can trade them like cards?

    Now, if they had included a boxing or wrestling game in there... then it might have been worth a rental.
    If only to watch a cartoon Keith Urban get the stuffing knocked out of him.

    Yay more 3rd party garbage...

    The fact that it's from EA is also a HUGE shocker...

    Maybe Nintendo should go back to not playing well with others.

    Another sports-based game using slightly altered/enhanced Wii Sports graphics? You are such a great third-party developer EA. Publish The Godfather and Medal of Honors 2. Then give us crap like EA Playground, Smarty Pants, the shallow MySims, and this? Oh, I forgot Boogie--if only the people that had played it could forget it too, along with the dancing blob.

    If this is any indication of the "40 titles in development for Wii" then EA is in the doghouse with Ubisoft.

    @PandaBear86

    That FPS might not be bad, provided Bloom and Timberlake are the targets.

    Hey, I thought of a way to save this game: Keep everything the same, but instead of using the celebrities as player characters, use them as the sports equipment. That might be worth a rental.

    I guess they didn't learn from the huge failure of EA Playground.

    Wow. EA really hates the Wii, doesn't it? They aren't even trying to develop real games for it anymore. They put out a decent port of the Godfather, and that's supposed to tide us over until what exactly?
