E3 06: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers Impressions

We take a look at the trailer for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

LOS ANGELES--Today at the Square Enix press conference, Akitoshi Kawazu, the executive producer for the Crystal Chronicles series of games, announced Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers for the Nintendo Wii.

Unfortunately, there wasn't any actual gameplay footage on display today, as appeared to be standard for Square Enix's Wii offerings. Instead, they offered up a minute-long or so CGI trailer of the game, which began with the customary four adventurers riding across a large plain, near the edge of a huge cliff, on top of four of the yellowest chocobos you're likely to see anytime soon. Soon enough, their speed was matched by a huge shape that started to resolve in the clouds off the side of the cliff. After a moment, it burst out of the cloud bank and was revealed to be an airship of the traditional Final Fantasy mold.

After that little snippet ended, the action resumed as the characters that rode the chocobos were standing atop a cliff, looking across at a stupendously large crystal that was suspended above a large chasm. There appeared to be some kind of city or structure built atop the mountain-size crystal, which the travelers were looking at with smiles on their faces. One of them, a young boy, appeared to initiate a Bahamut summon, and with that, the trailer ended.

Although there wasn't any gameplay on display, Toshiyiki Itahuna, the director of the game, promises that it will be a "daring fusion of graphics and style that is full of life, while still maintaining basic RPG tradition." GameSpot will have more details on The Crystal Bearers as they become available, so stay tuned!

When does it come out. I can't wait anymore. DanteDiPasquale and Darklink have good points. The last game really wasn't an RPG.

Also want to point out to some people the original Crystal Chronicles was NOT a standard JRPG. It was more along the lines of a Zelda title. Combat was action based and you gained no experience (to my chagrin) and instead collected items that boosted stats or granted spells after beating a level.

hey darklink its even saying that it's got online PLAY so playing ALONE, ONLINE doesn't seem logically XD but still i hope it's kind of a continued version of FFCC cause that would really be awesome

To fans of the first FFCC for gamecube: this game will not play like the original, it seems to be single-player based. if you want to play a sequel to FFCC1, get FFCC: rings of fate for DS, I think it's coming out next spring. I loved KH2, thought it was the ps2's best game, so i hope the game has similar combat. i also liked TP's waggle swordplay, so I hope they throw that in there too, along with the magic like cure and firaga.

I wasn't a massive fan of the previous CC game. I prefer the other Final Fantasy games, but I did enjoy playing CC. It just got a bit repetitive after a bit. Hopefully CC2, which looks pretty amazing so far, will improve on the first one. Good to see Square-Enix doling out some games for the Wii though!

I'm not convinced, the trailer sounded really generic... I also have trouble with sitting around playing turn-based RPG's on consoles (but not handhelds) so I've got my fingers crossed for an action-RPG style innovation happening. It's the Wii, it's all about actions and action.

Wahoo i always wanted to buy a wii but every time i had money well i had to spend it for other games but now since i already have the final fantasy crystal chronicles for the GC i am gonna buy this game here and the one for the ds so i have all of the final fantasy crystal chronicles games.
So thats why i am gonna buy a WII for sure now=)
1.) i might have the WII until the end of this year
2.) see ya guys online and i really hope that its got a good online gaming cause i hope its like the gamecube part where u take one of ur characters (that u already made in single player or u make one at that time) and use them in multyplayer 3.) i hope they still have the item get thingy where u always got something after u finished a place AND i hope they make this game able like actually all other final fantasy games to lvl ur character up 4.) i really do hope that its like bloodychimp said so we dont have to carry the crystal around well... that is if there is miasma existing at that time cause in final fantasy crystal chronicles u actually get rid of it. Is it me or does that sound like Final Fantasy 3 for the DS.

I think the Wii Controller might be better suited than ds. If you turn it sideways, it's simplistic, but longways with a nunchuck it is innovative. The only thing the ds brings is many fumbly buttons and the screens which could be used for maps and menus. (A help, but I'd rather use a wiimote) If you're playing wifi, than you all have your own screen anyway.
