E3 06: Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors First Look
Square Enix's E3 press conference yielded the first new game officially confirmed as a Wii launch title. And it just happens to be Dragon Quest! Read on for the first details.
LOS ANGELES--You knew Dragon Quest--easily one of the most popular role-playing series ever conceived--would be moving to next-gen platforms eventually. But did you ever think it would hit Nintendo's quirky Wii first? That's exactly what Square Enix announced at the company's press conference this morning when it unveiled (get ready for it) Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors. The downside is we have next to no hard details on the game; we didn't even get to see what it looks like. But hey, Dragon Quest on the Wii--doesn't that warm your heart?
What Square Enix did show at the conference was a live-action trailer of a goofy-looking dude running through the forest, wielding a Wii controller as if it were a mighty blade. Coming upon an old-fashioned television bearing a classic, Dragon Quest-style stone golem, the guy raised his Wii-mote and began to slash at the monster, clearly making it take damage on-screen. Whether or not this is how you'll engage in combat in the final game--or how anything else in Dragon Quest Swords will work, for that matter--is all open to speculation for the time being.
Square Enix executive producer Yuu Miyake did comment on the appeal of the "simplicity" inherent in the design of the Wii, which may give you a clue as to the design direction the team will be taking with the game. Since the Wii is due out this fall, you can presumably expect to see Dragon Quest Swords day-and-date with the launch of the system. Stay tuned for more info on when that will be and keep your eyes here for all the Electronic Entertainment Expo coverage you can stomach.
