Rock Band 3 in the works

MTV Games head confirms Harmonix is already working on third major entry in rhythm franchise, exploring possibility of another game devoted to one major band.

Rock Band is coming back for a second encore. In an interview with MCV this week, MTV Games executive vice president and general manager Scott Guthrie confirmed that Harmonix has begun work on a third Rock Band game.

When asked about MTV's plans for the franchise's major releases in 2010, Guthrie confirmed the possibility of a genre-spanning Rock Band game like the first two releases in the series, as well as a game dedicated to a major artist, like next month's The Beatles: Rock Band.

"We're exploring both, and possibly will do both," Guthrie said. "The Harmonix development team are working on what is effectively the next game, or 'Rock Band 3.'"

The executive also talked about the changing face of the music genre and described it as "transitioning as a category out of the 'plastic' area." With a plethora of musical instrument controllers littering the living rooms and closets of gamers worldwide, Guthrie said that MTV was switching its focus to software, whether it be packaged or online. And given the introduction of new technology like Microsoft's motion-sensing Project Natal, there might come a day when Rock Band might not even need all that hardware.

"We aren't standing still," Guthrie said. "We will keep moving into new areas and look at new technologies that our platform holder partners are also developing, such as Project Natal from Microsoft. We're working with them to pull some things together. "

Yeah, or it could have a decent track list! Screaming is not music.

Do you people still play this? I gave up on gh3.

At least without instruments we Europeans will not have to wait for the hardware

Of course it would be too much awkward and complicated to play air instruments in Rock Band.

@drumbreak1, I don't think he meant it that way, but instead how playing Rock Band with a motion sensor will pretty much NOT work. Air guitar and Air Drums? And the microphone? hmm, not only would it look even more stupid, but they'd have to change the mechanics in the game, and air drumming would be 10 times more tiring than plastic drumming.

i wonder if this will actually make to Australia on time this time, if not ever. Beatles RB is getting released here on time but for some stupid reason RB2 hasn't even been released here yet. and i doubt you could actually use Natal to actually play a GH or RB game. for Wii Music you probably could.

come one rock band, lets keep the quality up and the games to a minimum, not like GH where they pump it out every other month almost. 1 a year in enough

I hope the new game is of the genre-spanning sort and not another band exclusive. I love the variety.

Do you guys realize how exhausting(and not to mention stupid) it would be to play "air drums"? You're doing twice the work because you need the strength in your arm/wrist to lift the stick back up into the air with every downward stroke. You wouldn't have the rebound from the drum to push the stick back up for you. Kick pedals would be horrible too, it's also very exhausting to tap your foot or lift and drop your foot on the floor in place of a pedal for extended periods of time, not to mention you miss out on the angle of a kick pedal and instead have flat ground to work with. Natal is poisoning the minds of developers and we're going to suffer for it.

Saw RockBand Beatles today at best buy and was honestly dissappointed in what I saw. The graphics for the notes looked worse than RB2. I'll still get it but hope it's better than the 5 min. look I got of it. GH5 I'm getting to get the free VH GH. I wish they would add Hagar songs as well. More songs equals more fun especially with VH.
