NPD: July sees PS3 overtake 360 in Canada

Game-industry sales surge 62 percent north of the border, thanks to post-price-cut surge of Sony console; Wii, DS still dominate.

When game-industry research firm NPD releases US retail figures for the month of July, some analysts expect that they will show the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 for the first time, thanks to a pre-E3 Media & Business Summit price drop. Regardless of how the numbers shake out in the US, NPD confirmed to GameSpot today that the PS3 outsold Microsoft's console north of the border.

The PS3 managed to move more than 15,000 systems in Canada for the month, overtaking the 13,000 Xbox 360s sold. However, both consoles were bested handily by Nintendo's Wii, which racked up more than 36,000 sales for the month. On the portable side of the market, the DS topped all non-PC platforms in July with almost 46,000 units sold, well ahead of the PlayStation Portable's 6,000 tally.

The industry as a whole was up more than 62 percent for the month, to C$84 million ($78.9 million) from the C$51.8 million ($48.7 million) it managed in July 2006. Portable hardware sales were up slightly, but console hardware revenues for the month more than tripled, leading to an overall 11 percent increase for systems, up to C$35.8 million ($33.6 million).

On the software side of the business, growth was significant, but not as explosive. Overall software sales were up more than 30 percent, to C$38.2 million ($35.9 million), led by a 43 percent increase in console software. Portable games only managed 8 percent growth for the month. Rounding out the industry picture, accessory sales were up more than 78 percent, to C$10 million ($9.4 million).

The best-selling games chart yielded a few surprises. Activision's Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s was the best-selling new release, but only managed to make it to the fourth spot. Nintendo's Wii Play (which comes packed with a spare Wii Remote) was the best-seller of the month, and the original PlayStation 2 Guitar Hero II topped its Encore by coming in second. A value pack of randomly assorted Xbox games came in third. The rest of the best-selling software titles are listed below.

Canada's top 10 best-selling games for July 2007:

1. Wii Play with Wii Remote--Wii
2. Guitar Hero II with guitar--PS2
3. Value Pack (included games vary)--Xbox
4. Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s--PS2
5. Pokémon Diamond--DS
6. Mario Party 8--Wii
7. Guitar Hero II with guitar--Xbox 360
8. Transformers: The Game--PS2
9. Pokémon Pearl--DS
10. New Super Mario Bros.--DS

Everybody knows the ps3 is so much better than the wii and xbox 360 the only reason they dont they like other consoles better is because you got your 360 or wii earlier and cant afford a ps3. The PS3 is something to be proud of unless you bought the 360 first

Who cares what others have, it's what you have! If you're happy with your ps3 then good for you! This isn't about the world selling more xbox's than the ps3, it's about the ps3 selling than the Xbox in CANADA.

The only reason Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s sold so well, was because people didn't know how Not-Good it was gonna be. Oh well. Guitar Hero II is the real deal.

OmegaNemsis28, that is of course your opinion. What i don't understand is where you are getting these free games that are better than WoW? If by free you mean non-subsriction like EQ and guild wars, you haven't really played WoW

Looks like Xbox is going to beat PS3 in N/A for some time to come. Worldwide is the more important figure however, and that will be a lot harder for M$ to hang onto in the coming year.

Just because xxxxx # of players play this game/console doesnt mean it's better. Its basically all about popularity like in school -kids hang out the the ones considered kool.

It's like WoW - why do so many people play it? Well assuming its highly addictive and compared to drugs many times, millions of people play it 24/7 so that doesnt help. But WoW isn't a good game at all - I've played free games that are bigger, look better, and definatly play better but have triple as less people playing it.

I dont see why people don't understand this.

Unfortunately for Sony, the Xbox 360 outsold the Playstation 3 in the United States, which means that in North America, where the price drop took place in July, the Playstation 3 STILL was outsold by the Xbox 360.

Microsoft says sales of the Xbox 360 have greatly increased since the price drop of the Xbox 360 in August. It will be interesting to see what the sales for August are...Xbox 360 is going to be VERY FAR ahead!!!

It's funny how so many people sit an say how the Wii can't compete with the PS3 and the 360.. and how it's a gimmick for kids, or how it sucks because it doesn't have the graphics to compare. All I can say to you guys is this.. The Wii costs 100 dollars less than the premium 360 and 250 dollars less than the PS3.. while I can understand the PS3 being significantly more expensive, the 360 is only 100 dollars more than the Wii. The fact that the Wii basically sold as many units as the 360 + PS3 combined is a slap in the face to all you guys who said that Nintendo was doomed. The Wii has already passed the 360 in terms of total units sold while being released a whole year later. Nintendo has to be one of the smartest companies around who actually did some research this time and found out what the majority of people want, not the hardcore people who are outnumbered by the casual gamers by a longshot. Kudos to Nintendo to actually catering to a much larger audience, instead of just making a system that can single-handedly light my apartment on fire, or calculate my taxes. Go Cell processor..

Toronto is PS3 capital because Asians buy Japanese consoles. Here in Montreal, the PS3 doesn't sell much.. My friend at Future Shop told me that he hasn't sold a PS3 in more than 2 weeks, and his co-workers might have sold 1 or 2 in that time frame.

Toronto is being nicknamed the second PS3 capital in the world after Tokyo, although the Wii is winning in both cities, PS3 has largely surpassed XBOX 360.

@fr33_loader I bought one of those 500 games in one units for $15 dollars at the mall. And I'm having a hell of a time. I don't need internet, I don't need a killer gpu, a optical drive. I don't need to spend extra money to have good games now.

I probably already had those 500 games on a nintendo cartridge back in the '80s but, somehow, playing them again on my new console doesn't sound very appealing... guess it's a brain problem...

Hey! I can have a hell of a time with a 99 cents deck of cards or a sponge ball too if the cheapest fun is the coolest now...
