Lost in Blue Hands-On

We become stranded on a mysterious island filled with coconuts and plastic water bottles.

The Lost in Blue series has produced three games so far for the Nintendo DS. Last night, Konami announced a fourth entry in the series with Lost in Blue for the Wii. Although it has yet to receive an official title to help distinguish it from the DS games, we spent enough time playing to see a few ways this game is taking advantage of its new home on the Wii.

Lost in Blue for the Wii will introduce a new story and characters, but will be told in a similar way as the earlier games. You're a survivor of a crashed cruise ship and find yourself washed ashore on a small island in the middle of the ocean. Later you'll make your way to another island with plenty to explore, including the sunken remains of a ship and a volcano that is very much active.

We had the opportunity to explore the beginning of the game. The build we played was entirely in Japanese. This made understanding the story and dialogue rather difficult, but we were able to develop a good idea of what to expect from the basic exploration aspects. You begin the game by choosing from either a male or female character. Once you begin, you find yourself with a pet monkey by your side. These pets, which you find more of throughout the game, help with item gathering and provide a general source for entertainment and cuteness.

With little information available to you from the get-go, your main task is to fulfill your body's basic needs: eating and drinking. You find several berries on the ground, but you can also go up to a tree and shake it with the Wii Remote to drop a coconut. You'll also find waterfalls with drinkable water and plastic bottles to store some in for later.

Once you get your body back in working order, you can begin exploring. Much of this involves wandering about the island picking things up. While on the beach, you can spot mysterious lumps in the sand and dig them up. This is done by using the Wii Remote to brush away sand, revealing objects of interest such as small shells and, if you're lucky, slightly bigger shells.

We managed to collect some rope and driftwood: the perfect combination of materials for a raft. Once you're ready to build a raft, you use the Wii Remote to saw pieces of logs, and then make hand gestures to mimic tying knots with the rope. Unfortunately, our time with the game ended just as we finished building this raft, so we weren't able to see where it would take us.

Lost in Blue will also feature multiplayer. You and a friend can take part in upward of 40 minigames, both of the competitive and cooperative varieties. You can expect to see it released this fall.

I really enjoyed the DS versions of Lost In Blue 1 & 2, so I'm very much looking forward to this. There seem to be a few nice additions to gameplay too, which can only be a good thing.

I'm not concerned about the quality of the graphics at this point - it's only one picture from an early build version. There's plenty of time for them to improve that aspect before release, and I'd rather they put gameplay first anyway. I am pleased they're sticking with a cartoony look for the characters, though.

I don't mind the way this game looks. Sure it's resolution looks...DS-ish, but the character designs have personality and the environments are suitably empty and outdoorsy...like a pastel Ico. I just hope this game has some depth, and isn't just a string of activities with no thematic development. Too many games are like that now. I mean it's one thing in Wario Ware, but a game with characters and a setting should have some themes...you know? I hope this does. Anyone know how the DS games are?

Yet another half assed wii game. When will publishers start to take this console seriously?

To Zehydra: You can't say just because Square is publishing it makes it better, from what people are saying, My Life As A King seems to be garbage.

To Lisandro: Because it's Square Enix. I'm not saying Konami's bad, it's just that they've lessened as of late.

I suggest that the screen shot is not high quality and it's still in development after all; I wouldn't be so quick to condemn a game because of graphics anyway. I'm optimistic, it's an interesting concept; although I can't say I've heard about the DS versions before, let alone played them.

Besides, almost everyone had fun with the 64, despite the graphics, didn't they?

Please add Co-Op Story mode. That would be awesome. This could also be a really good MMO Survival Strategy Game.

Had the first title on the DS awhile back, and although it was difficult, I still enjoyed it. I'm anxious to see how this version works out since it will be on the Wii instead, and hopefully it has some exciting new things added.

As far as the graphics go I think they just wanted to maintain a kind of "fantasy/cartoony" look for the game, but we'll see how it turns out. Even if the graphics aren't top-notch, we can always hope for the gameplay to make up for it.

This looks like an N64 game...and after the somewhat mixed/negative feedback on the 3 DS games, I can't really say I'm looking forward to this.

the graphics looks nice but low quality. you people want the best of the best or even average of the average. what if the developers of this game is not a bunch of professional and just some enthusiast who love to make games and made it to the market. you guys have too much things done for you go make something yourself. the art in this games looks a little muddy but still nice. you average gamers have no appreciation for anything you retards except being pleased by candy and complaining for more unworthy games. buying new hardware paying money for bull**** upgrades.

if the gameplay is fun then its a winner no matter what cause thats what a game is for
