Spore Hero spawning Oct. 6

Wii spin-off of Maxis evo-civio-space-exploration sim touching down alongside DS version, Spore Hero Arena, this fall.

As the game-industry summer doldrums wind down, the year-end rush to grab release dates is gearing up. The latest game to plant its stake on consumers' shopping lists is Spore Hero, the Wii spin-off of the PC best-seller from Electronic Arts' Maxis studio. The $49.99, E10+ for Everyone 10 and over game will ship on October 6 in North America and on October 9 internationally--the same day as its DS sibling, Spore Hero Arena.

Released in 2008 to decent reviews, the first Spore was a simulation/strategy hybrid that saw players guide the evolution of a species from their mitochondrial beginnings on through civilization and, eventually, space exploration. By contrast, Spore Hero is an action adventure game that has players craft their own life-form using a modified version of the Spore Creature Creator with 250 parts. The creature starts out as a simplistic organism, and the player evolves it by collecting meteor fragments, which are doled out by completing quests that will (eventually) save said critter's homeworld from destruction.

Gladiatorial-style combat is central to Spore Hero Arena, which will focus on having players create creatures for fighting in various planets' arenas. Victories will unlock new body parts and upgrades that can be used to power up the game's virtual combatants, which will also fight in Wi-Fi bouts against other players. Spore Hero Arena is rated E for everyone and will sell for $29.99.

When I saw Will Wright at ComiCon '08 do a power point presentation on Spore, I was blown away. What Will forgot to tell everyone is that the depth of the game play is awful. There is zero depth. It's all concept. That really ruined that game for me. It doesn't matter if you have 8 million planets to visit, if there are only 5 different things you can do on them LOL.

Sigh... why don't they just port the PC version of Spore to the Wii? I realize Will Wright has a certain "vision" and he doesn't want to compromise it, and that's why each platform ends up with a different watered down Spore title, but honestly, the Wii would be the system that would be able to play most similarly to the PC version in terms of controls, and would also have that mass market/casual gamer appeal that loves games like The Sims and Spore.

"Apparently Tina Turner was wrong. We do need another hero". I lol'ed so hard when I first read that, that was gold right there. And yes like many others I was expecting a spore music game when I first saw the title .

what they really need is a SPORE FULL GAME for the PS3 Exclusively.. and not allow Xb360's to get it EVER.

If they keep making games with hero in the title, I may very well become an hero myself.

I thought the same thing as shakensparco and alkaline_DnB. I was like -blam!-, not another guitar game THIS SOON. Oh well, now watch Activision sue them to high heaven and force EA to close Maxis. They shoulda stuck with Sim City...

Watch Activision sue this game for containing "Hero" in the title as copyright infringement, then claim that it has publishing rights over it.
