Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition Hands-On

Feel like playing Resident Evil 4 again? How about with Wii-specific controls? Here's your chance.

Resident Evil 4 is one of the best action games ever made. We feel that enough time has passed since the game's original GameCube release to justifiably make such grandiose statements. Apparently, Capcom is just as confident as we are that the game still has legs because it has been working on bringing RE4 to the Wii for a release in the third quarter of this year. We're sure anyone who really wanted to play Resident Evil 4 has done so already, but from the little bit we got to play of the new Wii game, this looks by far like the best version yet. So if nothing else, Wii owners can add this one to their collections simply for the sake of posterity.

But don't get your hopes up about any new content. This is simply the original game (along with the extra content produced for the PlayStation 2 version) with new controls developed for the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. After a few minutes of hands-on time, we felt like this is probably the most ideal way to play RE4. You walk with the analog stick on the Nunchuk, hit the B trigger to go into aiming mode, and hit A to fire your weapon. The aiming works just as you'd expect, with the Wii Remote acting as a pointer that lets you move your crosshair freely around the screen. (It really is a crosshair now, by the way, instead of the laser sight in the original game.) However, moving the cursor to the edge of the screen doesn't control your view; you still have to do that with the analog stick as usual. We were able to score headshots on those relentless Ganados with greater ease than on the GameCube or PS2, thanks to the more precise, easier aiming.

The "knife search" option will also make the game play a little more smoothly. That's just a fancy name for using auto-aim with your knife attack, which was pretty unwieldy and hard to use accurately in the past. Now, you can bring up your knife by holding the C button on the Nunchuk, and attacking with it will automatically strike the nearest viable target. But you can turn knife search off if you really want the hassle of having to manually aim your strike. Rounding out the Wii changes, you'll occasionally have to use motion (such as waggling the remote) during the interactive cutscenes that occasionally pop up and threaten poor Leon's life.

There's not much else to say about the Wii edition of RE4, other than: If you never played RE4, and you have a Wii, you should get this game. (And if you never played RE4 and don't have a Wii, maybe you should get a Wii to play this game; it really does look like the best version.) Unlike on the GameCube, RE4 on the Wii will run in true 16x9 with progressive scan, though the graphical assets are taken straight out of that previous version. Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition is slated to hit shelves at a modest $30 price point, which seems like a fair price to us for what's potentially the defining version of a true masterpiece.

seriously, they ought to make RE5 for the wii. Really! It wouldn't be to hard. The controls could be identical to the RE4 port, and strafing could be very easily handlef with the anlog stick.

This is by far the most incredible game I've ever played. The control scheme is perfect, and this is coming from a true skeptic of shooter games on the Wii. I thoroughly enjoyed this game.

I have the GC version which I still play on the Wii but I have never played the PS2 content. For $30 I think it'll be worth checking out.

This looks great. Having not played any of the versions before, I'm really looking forward to playing this with the Wii controls!

I bet this scores at least 1.5 less than the GC version. Not too impressed by the videos I've seen for the Wii port. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

i hope they have an option to use the laser sight. the crosshair looks too cheap , like they rushed into it or something. and they better not ruin this port like they did on the ps2. i'm going to end up with an ulcer waiting for this game.....you better not screw me over nintendo !!

RE4.. the idea of the wii remote seems awesome to me. But seeing those videos..

I much preferred the lazer sight. Pointing with the remote (I got good aim) will make it EASIER to play, imo. Because the original version you had slight difficulty aiming at several enemies because the sight was slow to move around.

Aiming a permanent cross-hair will be far too easy for veteran players of the game who know where the enemies come from, and have already mastered their attack patterns.

I don't like the idea of a crosshair defaulting to the bottom of the screen when you are running about, it kinda ruins the atmosphere and it makes it look like a tacked on feature, rather than the game being MADE for this feature, if you know what i mean.

I just hope that when you are walking and running about - the crosshair fades out to nothing. But when aiming - it shows up. AND also you can CHOOSE to have different crosshairs and the lazer - if you want it.

PLEASE say they wont just leave it as it is!

The video makes it seem like whoever was playing had trouble aiming the gun... I don't remember those first zombies being that difficult to kill (though of course I wasn't an idiot - I took them out from the window rather than jumping down where they could get me)

I already own the Gamecube and PS2 versions of this game so apart from the new control scheme this game for me won't offer me very much. Yes it's a great game but come on 2 years have passed since it came out and Capcom could have added something extra even if it was a few more costumes or making Luis Sera a playable character in the Mercs.

im glad that they decided to keep the original game and just add the ps2 added content because from what i heard, the GC edition looks better then the ps2 edition... much a-do to the fact that the GC had better grfx than the ps2, only the GC was hampered by smaller disc format so ya cant wait.... never played the original and man i loves my shooters.... whether its unreal tournament to half-life or third person action/adventure/stealth game like the MGS series i loves my shooters.....

Oh yeah and after watching the movies it seems obvious that the biggest gripe is gonna be the camera... Nuts.
