Order Up! First Look

It's life "on the line" as we check out this Wii cooking game for the very first time.

Quick, name a famous chef. Now, who did you name? Gordon Ramsay? Bobby Flay? Anthony Bourdain? Cooking culture has become so prevalent here in the States that chefs like this have practically become household names. The same is true, albeit to a lesser extent, with video games. While the first name you might think of when someone says "cooking game" is Majesco's Cooking Mama series, it's not the only foodie game out there. Consider the upcoming Order Up! for the Nintendo Wii being developed by SuperVillain Studios, a game that will test not just your virtual cooking skills, but your talent at dealing with the restaurant business as a whole.

Set in the fictional town of Port Abello, Order Up! has you taking the reins of a single restaurant, working your way up through the ranks as you learn many different styles of cooking until you are good enough to hang with some of the finest chefs, with the ultimate goal of competing in the Fortified Chef Competition.

You'll start your career in Order Up! as the cook at the local burger joint and diner, flipping basic fare for the always-hungry customers who are on hand. During each session with the game, you'll first choose the restaurant you wish to work in. As customers begin to trickle in, you'll be able to take their orders. You'll work on orders for only one table at a time, so you'll want to get to your customers in more or less the order they arrived so they won't be waiting too long.

Once you have your orders in, it's off to the kitchen to prepare the food. You'll have a few basic stations to get food out--a griddle, frying station, oven, and cutting board. For each order, you'll have a number of steps you have to take in order to get things cooked. When cooking a hamburger, for example, you'll want to pop the meat on the griddle and let it cook--a heat meter will appear above the meat patty, indicating the temperature of the patty on either side (remember, you'll have to flip it halfway through to cook both sides). You don't want to burn your food, of course; if you do, though, you can always bin it and start again.

While the burger is cooking, you might be peeling lettuce, frying fries, or starting another order entirely. All of the cooking actions you can take in kitchen are handled with the Wii Remote. It's that balance of keeping your orders on track and maintaining a high level of quality that holds the challenge (and the fun) in Order Up!. The quicker and more skillfully you prepare a customer's order, the more money he or she will leave as a tip. Earning money in the game will allow you to upgrade your cooking utensils, buy more spices to give your food a unique flair (and meet the demands of always-demanding customers), and add restaurants to your growing culinary empire.

To help you along the way to restaurant mogul status, you'll be able to hire assistant chefs who can help you on the various stations in the kitchen. These chefs will have their individual strengths and weaknesses--some will be better on some stations than others, some will be better with the customers. Obviously, you'll be able to output more food with the help of assistants but, as the customers pile up, your organization skills will be taxed with not just your own cooking tasks but those of your assistants as well.

While you start off flipping burgers and making chili, the game promises a bunch of recipes to learn as you go--everything from traditional diner fare to regional food like Italian and Mexican, and fine gourmet meals as well. Due for release in early July, Order Up! is looking like a fun, fast-paced game for kids and food-loving adults alike, and we look forward to getting our hands dirty in the virtual kitchen to bring you more information on it in the coming months.

I saw a preview for this in NP and so I checked it out here. I actually think this game looks really fun...at the very least, I'll probably rent it when it comes out.

They should add a restraunt wars mode, where people have a cook off from around the world, via wifi. That would make it interesting.

You think this is fun? Have a couple of kids and you'll get to do this three times a day. Until they are 18 years of age! Get your Mom something good for Mother's Day.

By first gen PS2 I think he referred to games released in the first year of the PS2's release....just thought I'd clear that up.

"When I said in a post, many months ago now, that we needed a realistic cooking and restaurant sim, I didn't mean one with awful first-gen PS2 visuals and a silly style. Take this rubbish back and get me what I want! The customer is always right, SuperVillain Studios."

I didn't know that PS2 was the first gen on video games. What were the PS1, Genesis, NES and ATARI2600 generations? Prototypes? And what's with everyone bashing everything before they really know anything about it? This game isn't up my alley, but that doesn't mean you have to tear it a new bunghole. Sheesh, if you don't want it, don't buy it. And it doesn't look like a Diner Dash rip-off, it is like a mix of DD and Cooking Mama. Just because it isn't Halo 4 doesn't mean it's total crap. Don't make decisions on a game from 2 pictures. Really people, they're just video games.

    Ore no Ryori anyone?

Not a Diner Dash rip, but more of this other game. Well, maybe both. But I doubt in this new game you will be doing fun things like chasing "dine-and-dashers", stomping cockroaches, serving picky gourmets, and calling the police on drunks.

That was one hell of a good game that never made it here.

Diner Dash? That's exactly what this game is. I hope the company who made Diner Dash is getting some kickbacks for this blantant rip.

A suitable build on what the Cooking Mama franchise started. It's good to see Wii developers (SuperVillain=sweet company name) taking small steps in the right direction to realizing the potential of the system. Gamers are tiring of streamlined minigames that boil down to slight variations of those we've played on the last Wii title we purchased (only so much one can do waving their arms around). The addition of funds (not auto-unlockables like Cooking Mama), restaurant choices, and--most importantly--goals other than just preparing food in a step-by-step process will add much more longevity to this game.

Like Wii-Fit, this may turn out to be only a niche game with a cult following (lots of people like Cooking Mama and lots will enjoy Wii-Fit), but what's more important is gearing developers away from titles that are nothing more than a mish-mash of mindless minigames (except for the next WarioWare...we like your mindlessness!).

Graphically unimpressive? Yes--the people look like Lego-men and...well, I can't say the other, so I'll just say 'hotdogs'. But if you want a graphically overhauled COOKING game...? Sheesh, one can only hope Sony and MS would be smart enough NOT to venture in that direction.
