Next 007 game pushed to '10, Wolfenstein due this summer

Activision delays rumored James Bond driving game to next year, says Raven's sequel to id's shooter series is just months away, with Singularity following.

Buried in the financial facts and figures of today's Activision Blizzard earnings report was date information for two top-tier games. The first was of the unwelcome sort--namely, that the next James Bond game from the publisher won't be released until calendar year 2010. According to leaks from a closed-door event, the next game based on the venerable film franchise will be an original, vehicle-focused game from Bizarre Creations, which is also launching an all-new racing franchise later this year.

According to Activision, the delay of the as-yet-untitled 007 outing was "to avoid head-to-head competition with Call of Duty: [Modern Warfare 2.]" Last year, the publisher released James Bond: Quantum of Solace on November 4 to tie in with its filmic inspiration's debut in theaters (November 2 in the UK and November 16 in the US). Despite being released on six platforms, the Treyarch-developed game went on to sell less than 500,000 units in the US, according to NPD. One week later, Call of Duty: World at War--also developed by Treyarch--hit North American retailers and went on to sell just under 3.3 million units through December 31.

In happier news, Activision today revealed the release window for Wolfenstein, the relaunching of id Software's supernatural WWII action series. In development at Madison, Wisconsin-based Raven Software, the game is now expected in the summer months on the PC and Xbox 360. It will be followed later in the year by another Raven release, the time-shifting sci-fi shooter Singularity for the PC, 360, and PlayStation 3.

I think Quantum of Solace is the best Bond game out there by a mile. I'm not saying that Goldeneye wasn't good or anything, It's just that if you compare Goldeneye and Quantum together, Quantum of Solace is the better game. And i hope that Activision keeps the 007 license for a long time and the next Bond game does what Quantum did but fixes Quantum's problems.

007 game centered around driving? I don't know about that.. i liked it on the ps2 bond games like nightfire and stuff when you drove cars for 3 or 4 mission segments (kind of like in the movies) but since Goldeneye, bond games should always be about multiplayer FPS. Activision and Treyarch should look at how a 007 multiplayer game can provide tons of fun in different ways than any of the COD's.

You could include a bunch of gadgets, driveable armed sports cars, and a tons of classic movie references like with goldengun and laser included for weapons or a Moonraker space station multiplayer map. They've done this before but by just taking some time to try and make it a great game. 007 videogames should not suck, period.

I'm a big fan of 007. Quantum of Solace is the best 007 game since Goldeneye on N64. Treyarch did a great job.

Hey... why isn't id developing Wolfenstein? Just curious...

Activision doesn't honestly believe the awful sales of Quantum of Solace is because of Call of Duty, do they? It didn't sell good because it was a terrible game! A complete embarrassment to the 007 series!

I just hope this delay gives them time to make at least a halfway-decent game. But, if it really is a vehicle-based game, then I guess that's a no right there. I really hope that's only a rumor!

They should give the license back to EA. As much as I hate EA, their 007 games were pretty good. Activision isn't a very experienced company, so I'm really wondering how the hell they ended up with such a big license. If only MGM cared as much about the games as they do the movies...

What about the PS3 version of Wolfenstein? Is that scheduled for release during the summer as well? Or do we not care about that anymore? lol, nice thorough reporting there, Gamespot.

those bond developers shouldnt worry too much about the release date hitting other big titles. they should just make a better game next time and not just a license title.

Excited for Wolfenstein... Not so much about another Bond game.

Love the movies. I can't say the same about the games... The only exception being GoldenEye.

Busy year for Raven - These two titles along with Wolverine Origins. They rarely ever make bad games so all three can be counted on for some solid entertainment.
My only concern relates to Wolfenstein, on the multiplayer side of things. The 2001 RTCW actually had separate developers for single and multi, with spectacular results for both sides. The Raven-developed Quake 4 on the other hand, had a sweet single-player campaign, but the multi...well, I think disappointment would be a fair term to describe what it was. I just hope Raven deliver a multi worthy of the RTCW and ET name.

Sweet, I thought Wolfenstein looked pretty good from what they showed at QuakeCon last summer. Can't wait.

Why exactly do these devs keep trying to pump a James Bond driving game down our throats? Just wondering. Seriously, every time I think racing... I think 007.

I hope the multiplayer for Wolfenstein is like Return to Castle Wolfenstein's (not expansion) with a few modern modifications ofcourse. I remember back in early highschool playing that game online all the time. It was so much fun. Hope they put similar focus on the multiplayer aspect like they did in the past. That game had multiplayer features that were ahead of its time.
