TGS 2008: Castlevania Judgment Updated Hands-On

Another few rounds of Konami's new Castlevania fighting game leave us broken and bruised, but not without information on a few new characters.

TOKYO--Castlevania Judgment marks a new genre for the Castlevania universe: head-to-head fighting. Set in familiar grim, gothic arenas, notable characters from the series' past battle it out in melee combat controlled by accessible Wii controls. We spent some time in Konami's booth at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show checking out the latest build of the game, and we've got updated impressions on the technical performance, as well as info on newly announced characters.

When we played Judgment at E3, there were only four announced characters: Simon Belmont, Maria Renard, Alucard, and Dracula. This time around there was a new playable character on the roster, as well as a number of familiar faces showcased in a dramatic trailer. Death was the new playable character, a skeletal fellow who danced on pointed, bony legs and attacked with a formidable staff. A series regular, Death has eschewed the Grim Reaper's cloak for a sleeker, more battle-ready look that still managed to give us the heebie-jeebies. Other characters that were featured in the trailer but not in the game proper include Shanoa (heroine of the upcoming DS game Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia), Eric Lecarde (who has appeared in both human and ghost form in previous games), and Aeon (a new character who plays a similar role to Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat, summoning all the fighters to compete in battle). This accounts for eight of the purported 14 characters in the game.

The new build seemed smoother and the characters moved with more speed, giving the whole game a livelier feel. There was still some graphical imprecision, especially in busier stages, but on the whole this version felt like a good improvement on the E3 build. We also caught a quick glimpse of a character battling a giant minotaur, perhaps indicating a challenge that goes beyond mere one-on-one combat. Castlevania Judgment is slated for release this November, so check back soon for updated impressions and character announcements as that date approaches.

Simon looks pretty fruity. Couldn't they just put him in his traditional clothes? Those look the best, imo.

Also, Shanoa looks nothing like the DS version. What gives?

This could be the Super Smash Bros. of Castlevania.

Grrhh... on one hand, the idea is great. On the other... well... just look at all of the rest of their 3D attempts at CV games.

    Then again, who knows?

shanoa looks like some mix between a nun and bayonetta (a comparison i thought i would never say in my life), simon looks like a male dominatrix, death has no sythe and no shroud thing, dracula does not has these wierd gold things on his chest and why does a half vampire look the most normal of the bunch. if konami wanted to do something new, they should have made this an FPS

An awesome trailer a good game does not make.

To me, this is looking like it could be the Soul Caliber Legends of the Castlevania series.

Also not digging the character design.

Regardless, if this game manages to net a 7.0 or more on average I'll probably pick it up.

I think Konami can get it smoothed out in a month. Im hoping they made a typo when they said "Death carries a staff"

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE... don't be horrible. I really want this game to be good but I don't see how it possibly could. It's supposed to come out in a month and there are still graphical issues? Jeebus, just push it back a few months and make sure it's a good game. Don't rush the damn thing out just so it can be sold for the holidays.

    @ KoruKinshi:
If they make it compatible with the classic controller, wouldn't it automatically be compatible with the Hori fighting stick?

Anyway... I don't know - this just seems like a bad idea. I hope it ends up being a good game, I'm just not betting on it. It just seems like it will end up like Ehrgeiz. Speaking of Ehrgeiz, FFXIII VS seems awfully similar (read: it's the exact same concept) and I don't see how anyone can have reasonably high expectations for that game either.
