E3 2008: Wii Call of Duty: World at War Impressions

Nintendo gave the world a brief look at the next Call of Duty game for the Wii, and we picked the trailer apart for info.

As part of Nintendo's E3 press conference, Reggie Fils-Aime unveiled a number of games for the Wii. Some of these games, such as Animal Crossing: City Folk, were shown in depth, whereas others, such as Call of Duty: World at War, gave us just a quick peek at what to expect. Details are scarce on COD: World at War, but we were able to glean a few details from the brief trailer, which showed the Wii version of the game for the first time.

For starters, the game appears to be set in World War II (like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions), given that the weapons on display seemed to fit the time period--and it has the words "World at War" in the title. A standard rifle was, of course, part of the arsenal, but most interesting was the flamethrower, which was used liberally throughout the jungle areas as well as the remains of a war-torn city. The impressive inferno of the flamethrower made short work of the few enemy soldiers foolish enough to get close.

One obvious way in which World at War will differ from Call of Duty 3 for the Wii is that in additional to a traditional control scheme, it will make use of the Wii Zapper (the plastic shell that holds a remote and Nunchuk to simulate a gun). That's great news for folks with a Zapper gathering dust in the corner, but that's not the only exciting news. World at War will feature co-op play so that you and a friend can join together to crush the enemy. It's unknown at this time whether or not you'll be able to play cooperatively via the Internet, or if you'll be able to play the entire campaign with another person.

Although the official release date is a vague "coming soon," Call of Duty: World at War is already an impressive-looking game. The visuals were a cut above most Wii games, and there was no shortage of explosions to keep the action intense. We expect World at War to be on the show floor, so check back soon for more detailed impressions.

moh2 is still my favourite game for the wii and i have had it around 2 years. the graphics are lazy though and the online mode simple. i really want them to push the wii on the game and show what it can really do.

I just love the Call of Duty series. Call of Duty II is still for me the best! Now that I have a WII, I am going to get this game.

If this sells well this might get good game developers interested in the wii that would be great to have games like the 360 ones

Hmm... I don't really want to buy a Zapper for this, I don't know, I think I'll just see how it does and see if it's worth buying a Zapper, because I'm not spending money on the Zapper before I read some reviews of the Wii version.

MoHH2 didn't quite deliver for me so I've got my hopes pinned that this does for Wii what COD4 did for the PS3 and nail the online side of things where MoHH2 just, IMO, scratched the surface.
If Treyarch don't with both the engine AND all the good work of IF before tham then I don't see where the big step forward for FPS online games for the Wii will come from(it'll be way harder for a smaller company like High Voltage to do it with less money and experience with The Conduit-but if Treyarch do well then HV might learn a thing or two to make the Conduit a good online prospect too).
But, whatever, I'll be sticking with COD4 for PS3 and buying this one for Wii in the hope that we finally do get the full FPS experience(online and single player) that we all hoped for when we first glimpsed the Wii controls.

It looks diffrent from MoHH2, and I hope it has the leveling, perks, and classes like COD4. Otherwise, I'll stick with Heroes 2.

Aside from what I've heard from Gamespot, there will be competetive online play for the wii. I've read this on numerous sites. I guess the wii version will have everything the PS3 and 360 versions will have. This is true even with the game engine. There using the exact same game engine on wii as the platforms but are getting rid of some of the shading affects and other things. Therefore the graphix will be a little less intensive. If the online multiplayer is true, ill def be buying this game for my wii. Lets just hope we dont have to deal with freind codes.
