Alone in the Dark golden

Atari wraps development cinematic action horror title, due on 360, Wii, PS2, PC on June 24; PS3 edition out this fall.

Alone in the Dark is an important game for Atari and its parent company, Infogrames. As noted by Infogrames CEO David Gardner in April, the game signifies a turning point in the company's dismal financial performance. It will soon be discovered whether Alone in the Dark will prove to be a light in the forest, or leave the publishers out in the cold.

Atari said today that development has wrapped on Alone in the Dark for the Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PC, and the game is expected to hit its expected June 24 ship date in North America (June 20 in Europe). As previously noted, the PlayStation 3 version of the game will arrive this fall.

The Xbox 360, PS3, and PC versions of Alone in the Dark have been developed by Eden Studios (Test Drive Unlimited), while Hydravision Entertainment handled PS2 and Wii development. The game is a sequel of sorts to the original Alone in the Dark, which Atari released for the PC in 1992. Eden and Hydravision's Alone in the Dark will once again star the original game's protagonist, Edward Carnby. Adding a twist, whereas the first was set circa 1920, the new game transports that character--unaged, though presumably less pixelated--to a modern-day New York City.

Atari promises that Alone in the Dark will create the same cliff-hanger excitement of popular serialized TV series with its episodic presentation. The game's menus will be presented in a DVD-style format, where players can skip ahead to any point in the game, as they see fit.

    Glad I got both systems. You can get Alone in the dark for the 360, You can get Metal Gear 4 for the ps3. I should have done this last generation, with the xbox and ps2... instead of giving into the fanboyism of the last generation. It's good to to be the king.

    I hope this will be good, for my sake and for Atari's. Atari is a good company. Granted they have put out alot of junk, but they have put out some good titles (e.g. Rollercoaster Tycoon). If this one sinks Atari may be over.

    @jedilink109

    If we follow your retarded logic, we would all watch the end of a movie first just because we could.

    Doubtful. This continues to happen on games that start life as 360 games, but as more and more developers start on the PS3 we'll continue to see these cases decline. Certainly the majority of multiconsole games don't seem to have an issue releasing simultaneously on both consoles.

    Well...doesn't that defeat the purpose of the game if automatically you can skip to the end of the game?

    I loved 'Alone In The Dark' on the PS1. I hope the PS2, DS and Wii versions are good. Those are what I'll be selecting from.

    digitalpro, I guarantee you that it's the latter option. If Atari had everything together to release the game on the PS3 simultaneously with the others, they would do it. If only one in fifty PS3 owners who were planning to buy the game get miffed enough at the delay not to buy it, it costs Atari big money. Also, I think it has been clearly shown by now that the market can bare more than one big launch at a time. This year so far we've seen game after game come out with major success.
