A fun while it lasts fighting game Real score= 59%

User Rating: 6 | WarPath: Jurassic Park (Classics) PS
Warpath: Jurassic park is a Tekken type fighting game for dinosaurs. With 14 dinosaurs, 10 arenas and 4 game modes to choose from as well as a museum it doesn't offer hordes of depth but will satisfy anyone looking for a quick burst of fun. Dino fans will get more out of it then most.

The visuals aren't the worst seen on the playstation but could be better. They don't detract from the gameplay as such but if they were a bit cleaner then the whole experience might have been a bit cleaner. The gameplay itself involves pitting one dinosaur against another in a jurassic park themed arena until only one still stands. It sounds fun but it grows old quickly. Each bout consists of a best of 3 rounds which is just one element clearly taken from the tekken series. The problem with the gameplay is that it's to simple. There's only 4 moves for each dinosaur which are controlled by the face buttons. You might think that combos could make up for this but each dinosaur only has one combo move to speak of and it's far to long an convoluted to string together in the heat of a fight. Rounds don't tend to last longer then a couple of minutes which turns out to be a good thing because it's not a game you want to be playing for a long time. When fighting a small dinosaur or human might run past and you can eat them to regain a small amount of health.

If you inflict enough damage on your oppponent then your dinosaur will go into what's called frenzy mode. You hold down r2 and then press any button and your dinosaurs attacks become a lot stronger until frenzy mode ends. It ends once your opponent has hurt you enough. Going into frenzy mode will usually ensure victory in that round. Once you've won your dinosaur will roar a little and a human voice will pop up with some sort of strange comment. The human voice is totally pointless and takes away from some of the realism of the game if that's possible. By that I mean it takes away from the fact that maybe the dinosaurs have just met in the wild and started fighting.

The games four game modes are arcade, choice, survival and team. Team can only be played in multiplayer and involves each player picking at least 3 dinosaurs to have in their team. When one dinosaur on your team dies the next one in the team is summoned. You win by killing all of the opponents dinosaurs. Arcade mode is a series of matches in a row. You have to win tem all to complete arcade mode and unlock choice and survival modes. Choice mode is put simply a single match where you cna choose both yourself and your opponent. Survivla mode is a never ending series of matches. Each match only consists of one round in survival mode but your damage is carried from round to round. Survival mode ends once you have run out of health. The best mode is definitely team mode so it's a shame it can only be played in multiplayer.

Museum is the games other feature. It's too limited however because all it contains is a variety of stats on each dinosaur in the game. Overall Warpath: Jurassic park is a mediocre tekken clone that will only appeal greatly to dino lovers. Anyone else looking for a fun and long lasting playstation fighting game should look to Tekken 3 for their thrills.
