Will be interested to find out if the story has any hints as to why Relic decided to use the classic Ultra Marines, this time around. Having only played the Dawn of War games myself, by default I'd prefer the Blood Ravens. More importantly, I'd prefer Relic had summoned the same level of actors as DoW2 features, or even the same actors themselves. The point of the new chapter of space marines, afterall, was so they had more creative freedom, at least in terms of game lore. How ironic that now that they preferred an original chapter, the story and dialog quality plummeted.

Oh yeah the final boss was a big let down. The hoards were way more fun but the constant yelling of the word "SpaceMarines" was very very irritating!

I had alot of fun with the game, picked it up at full price during launch day and i'm still having lots of fun to this day. The SP and MP are allright but the co-op mode is addictive and fun with a group of good friends.

if the game is so "empty" why did gamespot spend 7 minutes review? this is a great game. jugde for yourself some reviews can be misleading

Uhhmmm ehhh... you first point out the 7-minute review long, as though it's worthwhile, only to right next suggest it's misleading, implying it's not worthwhile. I get'cha, but heh, your comment was amusingly contradictory, in a way.

the campaign may get a little repetitive after a while though it has its moments, but there r plenty of things to do in multiplayer, the last couple of updates have been for the best, and many bugs have been solved, there is still some problems that persist like occasional lagging and the match making doesnt seem to work all that well, also the last mappack DLC since not that many ppl have it, it is a little hard to find ppl to play in the new maps except maybe on weekends.

I just wondering sinds i got both a PS3 and a Xbox360 on what console this would look better? I know Assassins Creed Revelations does look better on PS3 and i can say so because i played it on both systems. I just ask because they got this game for a bargain price atm on the playstation store and its cheaper then buying it in stores. So if anyone could help me out with some info its highly welcome :)

@ Delrothness - While I've yet to try Space Marine out I must say that I think your mini-review is very well reasoned and I think a little fairer to the game than GameSpot's. These days games that are seen to be walking a well trod path and don't have something that really sets them apart do seem get marked down on that principle if nothing else.

I really think this game deserves better than a 7.0. Yes I know a 7.0 is "Good" but I gotta say I really love this game. The setting, the combat, the variety in enemies, the graphics and insane multiplayer. What's great about the combat, other than the fact that it's a blood fest, is it isn't just a third-person shooter, it also has melee combat. Sure it's just a hack n' slash fest but what's wrong with that, isn't that all Diablo is and same with Gears of War where you just use a chainsaw? The multiplayer is great too and a big reason it is is because it's not twitch-based like CoD where you die so damn quickly. I'm not gonna try to convince anyone here, I think the game is awesome and I'm still playing it a lot so just download the demo or rent it from Gamefly or whatever and try it for yourself. But I gotta say you wouldn't be on this page if you didn't have some interest so just give it a go. I give it a 9.0.

This is boring to watch. If anyone feels differently- can you tell me how it isn't really boring- from repetition/simplicity? I'm open to variety of opinions.

@stoposto Try the demo. No one can tell you if you'll like it or not. I love it, but then again I love 40k and slaughtering Orks.

Must say it i havent played it, but from the comments i do get the feeling its just a hack and slack with a mix of first person shooter, or am i wrong :)? not a Warhammer fan and not liking the endless killing of orcs, so is it worth it for me to buy :P ?

I'm confused, Kevin said the boss fights were really not exciting, but only the one he showed was not that exciting... the warboss and the chaos lord were crazy good.

Celerity11
Celerity11

totally agreed with kevin, this game isnt practically bad it's just shallow, after beating the campaign there is a feeling you didnt get enough content for the price you paid. 7.0 seems reasonable even generous I dare say. shame there isnt a co-op mode, that would really increase the value of this game

@Warlord_Irochi -Ow yes, that was very hot.

simon1812

Loved the game , but I rented it just feel to short and too few multiplayer options (few maps, few game mods) to keep their longevity , thought I returned the game and totally forgot about the a third multiplayer option relic was to release so I guess I will rent it again :3 , but still the game feels expensive when it comes to the relation between content and price tag, yeah thats what I mean. if relic is able to improve over this product space marine 2 will be truly epic, though they could just DLC the hell out of this game, that would work too. just like it was done with the RTS, in case you dont know WH40k was keep alive thorough a decade of almost a dozen of expansion packs who made a good RTS even better, it worked.

Just what the video game industry needs: more space marines.

This is one time I don't agree with Kevin. Space Marine is a solid game with lots of fun. It really deserves an 8. My only complaint is it needed more jump pack levels.

Space Marine is a fantastic game. Some of the reviews criticisms are true but the overall package is just great fun. 7/10 is a fairly harsh score, I would say Warhammer fans this is a 9/10. Non-warhammer fans it's an 8.

RAVERSTAR
RAVERSTAR

Oh forgot to say.. If you like your guns this game scores 9. Serious punishment can be meated out in this game. I have often laughed and cheered accidentally whilst firing these weapons! for the Emperor!

RAVERSTAR
RAVERSTAR

7 is a good fair score, and the game Space marine is a good start. miles better than firewarrior was. I understand warhammer fans think 7 is unfair in comparison to Gears3's score. But hey, I'm a Warhammer fan and I'm telling you that just because Warhammer's universe has more depth and appeal than Gears and its frankly shallow backstory, that does'nt mean its a better game. Warhammer is fantastic for fans... but Gears is a far better game. Gamespot reviews games. case closed people!

Atheosis
Atheosis

@mancluxI You haven't even played it yet. But if previous Gears games are any indication you are wrong. Gears of War has been a fun series but it isn't better than Space Marine.

Atheosis

@Gelugon_baat Relic is a niche developer, and is pretty much completely unknown to action and console gamers.

manciuxl

when you look at gears of war 3 you know why space marine got only a 7 gears of war 3 is better in every way:multiplayer, single player,co-op,graphics,story gameplay etc

Kevin VanOrd always has the best reviews!

skip861
skip861

The reason why people think 7 is bad score is because the scores are so inflated. I can't remember the last time they gave a major game less than a 7, 75% of a game's score is just based on hype. Its like the lowest possible score a game can get and still be worth buying. On a fair 1-10 scale, this game would probably get a 7. But on the "Gamespot scale" a 7 is like a 5. And most people take it as an insult to this game and WH40K.

Spudtaco
Spudtaco

Its a shame that it got only a 7.0. I think people were expecting this to be similar to Gears of War and were disappointed when it shared more elements with the God of War games than the previous title. Still I've purchased it, and me and my friends have played it non-stop since we got it. Its mindless fun and a nice change of pace from all the cover-based shooters already out there. Don't be put off by this review :)

@Atheosis Yep, all because of who it's made by. I'm a fan of Gears -- don't get me wrong, but I believe so many games are underrated simply because they're not made by companies such as Epic Games, Besthesda Studios, Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Ubisoft, etc.

Mistwaver1985

This review doesn't even give this game any justice. It's a great game, and the story seems pretty good, at least what of it I've saw. I played the trial version of it on OnLive, and I was amazed at how fun the game was and how awesome the journey felt. You play a little, and you're welcomed by a short but amazing cutscene to setup the next little bit of the story. You play a little more, and you get another short but amazing cutscene, then you might run into a boss battle. It starts out incredibly easy, but quickly ramps up in difficulty. The first boss I fought (or it may of been a miniboss) took me a couple attempts to beat. It may not be an epic story, but it's satisfying. And the reviewer saying this game is nothing but a slaughterfest must of been playing a ripped version of the game, because the story is pretty damn good compared to what we've been getting on the PC lately.

Meanwhile Gears of War 3 gets a 9.5. *eye roll*
