Better than I thought it would be.

I loved all of the old Dawn of War games, from the first to Dark Crusade. Had mixed reactions about Soulstorm. When Dawn of War II first made its appearance, I was ecstatic. I thought they would be updating the graphics, developing an interesting campaign story, and maybe introducing a new race.

Well, they did all of those things. But then I found out that there would be no base-building, and Terumune was sad, because he likes base-building. Then he played the demo on Steam, and it was clunky, hungry, and not especially compelling.

So I left it alone for months. Finally, I decided to give the game a shot, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. The campaign story, although not Pulitzer material, was well grounded within the WH40k mythos. The characters were voiced well, although their unit responses lacked the variety of the original games. They fixed the memory leaks. The gameplay, in spite of the lack of buildings, was fairly solid.

If anything, the campaign suffers for being to easy, and some of the missions, as has been harangued on repeatedly by others, rather repetitive. The conversations between characters between missions alleviates some of the boredom, as does the gear collection system.

I can't really remark on multiplayer. Don't really care about it, never really cared about it. But as for the campaign: overall, it was worth a play through, especially if you love the WH40k universe. If you're just a casual gamer, it can still be fun, but I'd recommend waiting for it to drop in price.
