Just bought this for seven dollars off of PSS, should have known there was a catch for an awesome game being so low price. Why do I think this version sucks? They took out my favorite mode from regular VF5, they one where you went around beating the arcades, and doing do you could unlock various items to customize your fighter with. Not only that, they made it so that you have to now buy the customization items to be able to use them, which imo is stupid.
Sorry for the rant. I was just really looking forward to playing this again but they way this version is, made me feel like I wasted 7 dollars.

Well you kind of wasted $7 in a way because now you have to buy the item packs separately for $15 each bundle. There are 2 bundles, one with half the character items and one with the other half. When you have all the bundles you can play special sparing mode , which is the same as the old Quest mode you loved so much.
You really screwed up, because they had a holiday sale where you could buy the game with ALL DLC INCLUDED for just $19. Live and learn.

So you have to buy all the bundles to play the old mode? And they advertised this as being an upgraded VF5, sounds more like a screw players over version of VF5.
Also I only got my PS3 on the 30th lol, the sale was probably over by then.

No no, unfortunatly the game is this shallow, it unlocks all the items at your liesure, and unlocks a single player mode which all it is is wave of ai players with a custom get up, and some get Very anoying to beat. And pretty damn BS you see those written sayings on the loading screen while the removed it from this ver. completely.
The arcade version is a lot more plentiful, custom intros, alternate stage backdrops, you can buy your items, freaking bingo, and as said before they did have those messages you could write to show on the loading screen: you had no idea how much i was looking forward to those.
Gameplay wise, its amazing... When your game is on and your getting involved with it, its really damn cool, i can't play SSFIV any more cause of how much freedom i have in this game. But yeah, it really does set the game back being pretty~ shallow. It has the potential to be amung the greats.

I went and bought the packs anyways, was messing around in training and decided to just buy em. I wish the old quest mode was back, but at least customizing is pretty fun. Still not as good as the old version put still pretty good imo.

Alternate stage backdrops? Are you making stuff up, because I've never seen that. Also, the arcade version costs a lot lot LOT more. You only have like 40 seconds to buy AND equip items, and you need a ton of orbs to get anything above the bronze class. The custom intros are really overhyped, and since they play on the character select screen, the only way to see them online would be to make matchmaking take longer, and nobody wants that. Knockout Trial is kind of fun, but if they put it in the home ver, that'd probably kill the arcade version, so I'm ok with its exclusion.

That was my guess. It's too bad every R was updated to FS, so R is essentially a lost game that might as well have never existed. I'd like to play it once or twice, just for reference.
I'm still baffled by the fact that not one of the dozen plus arcades in Tokyo I went to had a VF4, or any VF prior to FS. I'm always seeing people whining about how much more they loved VF4, you'd think there would still be a few around considering the 3rd Strike scene is still huge.

Yeah TC, as far as single player content goes VF5 had more. But as far as gameplay goes this one is much better imo.

this game's gameplay is meh and doesnt fully represent a true virtua fighter experience if you ask me. sega should have ported VF4 or found a way to give vanilla VF5 online play. final showdown doesnt feel like the same game, and what it tried to do doesnt feel great

I have no idea why they didn't include quest mode. I'm thinking of trying to get back into it, but I'd definitely be playing it now if that mode was still in the game. They need to actually put effort into these characters, set up rivalries and tell us why they are fighting. Give this series the offline experience and overall polish that it deserves. Also...I miss the hype announcer lol.

Quest Mode was replaced with Online Mode.
Virtual arcade hopping and playin against ghost data AI from top VF players to increase your rank and title was changed to playing online against LIVE players to increase your rank and title.

I know, but I didn't like the mode they put in instead of quest mode, felt incomplete and tacked on. And with quest mode I never had to worry about finding matches. When I played this regularly, finding people to play against was a chore. And there weren't too many people at my skill level(bad) either, facing a barbarian when I'm a kyu or whatever it's called wasn't fun.

Dawg, if you want the real Virtua Fighter experience, VF2 is for download, and has online play.
Speaking of which, I haven't downloaded it yet, and I gotta go do that.

Actually my favorite part about FS was not having to spend countless hours unlocking crap. These days almost nobody has the time for that. The mode where you fight custom characters is pretty cool too, gave me some nice ideas
