What do the orbs in quest mode do?

I've got five different color orbs, but i have no idea what they do.
Any help?

It's been a long time since I played but if I remember correctly you get a special prize if you collect a whole set of the orbs (there are 7). You can get two prizes from collecting two sets. After that you can collect them for a third time but you won't get a prize.

Be careful though when fighting another fighter with orbs, you may lose one of yours if he/she beats you. You'll have to wait until you fight that character again to get it back.
