A unique and delightful retro game from Capcom.

User Rating: 9 | Viewtiful Joe PS2
I remember first playing "Viewtiful Joe" on my PS2 back in August of 2004. I was not impressed. This unique cel-shaded actionier is a tribute to retro side-scrolling brawlers. It was first released for the GameCube, but the PS2 port includes a cool exclusive; Dante from DMC. Unfortuantely, you have to beat the game before the Legendary Son of Sparda can be sued. As for the game itself, it takes a little while to get used to. Like Tony Hawk, the gameplay is simple, yet can be very involving (and challenging) to create combo lines. As Joe, you're given simple attacks, but upgrading your powers will allow you to string together massive combos. The enemies can be very difficult, but light platforming segments and puzzles also break up the monotony. The game is "Ninja Gaiden" by way of "Super Mario Bros." if you can imagine that. However, If you're expecting a game that will innovate, then you'll be disappointed. The game is a solid action title that will appeal mainly to the younger crowd because of it's colorful presentation. However, the game is tough and suitable for all ages. So if you want to play an old school beat em up with some fresh ideas, than you'll have a lot of fun with "Joe". It's in the tradition of the great retro Capcom games like "Mega Man".
