Revolutionary. Viewtiful Joe is an excellent beat-em-up game, lots of action packed moves and mind breaking sound efects
Viewtiful Joe did just that. Some dude over at Capcom got a crazy idea to make a game about a skater punk movie lover who gets sucked into a movie after his girlfriend is kidnapped and puts on a tight red outfit with a pink cape to kick some ass. And whoever that Capcom employee is, I think he deserves a million dollars and a pat on the back, because Viewtiful Joe is a masterpiece.
Let's start with the gameplay. Take everything good about past side-scrolling action titles, drop a little bit of The Matrix in there, put the ingredients into a blender, mix, and serve chilled and you've basically got Viewtiful Joe. The controls themselves are great and are perfectly executed. You can also slow down or speed up time avoiding bullets and punches along the way. You earn V-points during levels to buy new powers and abilites as well as lives and cheeseburgers (to fill up your health bar). The game features only 7 levels, but they are 7 long, challenging, and fun levels that I guarantee you with play through at least 2 or 3 times. Viewtiful Joe is a truly amazing achievement and I'm glad it was recognized by critics as well as it was.
The graphics are just as impressive as the gameplay. The cel shaded look is perfect and all of the characters look great. During gameplay, the framerate doesn't slow down for a second. When you are in slow-mo beating on baddies, you will never get sick of watching robot bolts and gears fly around.
The sound effects and music are equally good. The music is really driving and keeps the action intense. The sound effects are the greatest part. Every punch, kick, and explosion makes you happy. Remember to crank the speakers when you start putting the hurt on your enemies, too/
Viewtiful Joe is easily the best action game available for the Gamecube and probably cracks the to 10 Gamecube games in general. VJ is both a technical and artistic masterpiece that should be recognized by all gamers that have any sense of fun.
