Great game. Highly addictive and immersive in parts. Does a great job of recreating jungle warfare and combat situations

User Rating: 8.5 | Vietcong (2003) PC
I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I am a fan of the Vietnam era and have seen every Vietnam War film there is. I also have every Vietnam themed PC game to be hand and this by far is my favourite game.

The Good:

The atmosphere in this game is amazing. Jungle sounds, gunfire and the chatter between your squad. You feel like you are immersed in the environment in which you play.

I really liked reading the diary and listening to the radio at the base Nui Pek between levels and objectives.

The visuals and graphics are surprisingly good, waterfalls, huey crashes, but can seem a bit dated by comparison to more recent shooters.

The levels and missions are quite varied from the usual jungle seek and destroy to tunnels, ravines, manning a gun on a hueys, PBR's .

The variety of weapons and arsenal at your disposal is realistic i.e. ak-47's, M16's M1911's and grenades. The choice of weapon depends on the appropriateness for the objective.
If you are tired of WW11 themed shooters and games like Quake, Doom, Farcry Resident Evil this game might be a welcome change.

This game does an excellent job of recreating Vietnam and the jungle warfare and combat situations experienced there. Some missions require stealth (Papa Oscar Whiskey), while others require unrelenting killing of VC using different weapons as in Radio Relay.

The Bad:
This game is difficult. It can border on the frustrating in parts of the Underground City i.e. Tunnels and in Arroyo.

Some VC soldiers can be impossible to kill and can take a while to figure out how to get at them. Sometimes the movement and interaction of Hawkins can seem sticky and leads to annoyance in game play.

Some parts of the game will need to be played over because of the save system.
You only get between 4-5 saves, which need to be used appropriately until you get to an automatic save area.

It is a pity that there is no urban level to play, which was corrected in Vietcong 2 .

Summary:
If you like the Vietnam era this game is for you. Good single player campaign with varied missions will keep your interest for a long time.
Graphics satisfactory but good be better. I highly recommend. Can be picked up at a bargain price now.
