XCOM Reveal Trailer
There's something strange going on this town...
What is this tripe. People have been asking for a remake of the classic xcom style gameplay for a long time now, and instead we get a run of the mill fps instead.
awesome. need more supernatural stuff like this. kinda like Alan Wake. the graphics looks a bit dated though...
What does this have anything to do with X-COM? This gameplay looks nothing like X-COM. Why take a classic strategy game and turn it into what appears to be an additional run-of-the-mill FPS.
I read a lot of comments like "This game looks amazing!" and disagree. What exactly looks amazing about this game? This game looks and plays "okay" at best. How long do you think it would take to get bored of shooting black blobs as this trailer suggests?
In 2 years we will have Bioshock and Mass Effect type games and that will be it. Of course, if that happens, the market will be dead in three.....
This game has some potential to be great! Hope that its not too short of a game. We will see in 2011 right chums.
am owner of the originals, perfect 10s even today, TFTDeep is my fave. not pleased about the recycling of the X-com title but time marches on. hopefully this game will evolve and yield a turn base PBEM version using WEGO turn engine.
It'll be interesting if its like the original in that you start out with current technology and everytime you encounter aliens you research their origins, spacecraft, and equipment then you can manufacture them to use.
Sweet graphics, not too overly rich of effects for which you would need a 3000 dollar machine, but not too low either, with a stable engine, this could work out well, quality wise, hope they make all the other things like story, gameplay and sound also outstanding. Could be a real kick-ass game! :)
It looks cool, one thing though.. Mind you I've never played the first X-COM. But I've seen my bro play it. But I'm curious, I thought in the original X-Com you faced the regular looking aliens not some weird black blob..
@11021102 I am really excited too.I don't know how many times I have watched this trailer!!!!(Its atmosphere is so twillight and gloomy)...
Guys, just a reminder but they'veonly released a sliver of whats in the game. Blobs aren't going to be the only aliens and I'm sure there are more similarities to the original X-Com than what is displayed at E3. This is the very first released piece of footage of the game it's not gonna have much to show. It looks bad ass especially as an X-Com spin-off we'll all just have to wait patiently and see what they reveal over the next few months.
Where's the geoscape? Where's the base building/management? Research? This is not xcom and never will be. It's another "Fallout screw up"
I like the whole 60's with Alien and futuristic weapons theme. The only thin I'm disappointed about is the blob things. I hope they have more humanoid looking ones or at least a lot of possession.
Me and some other guys are making a remake of the first original x-com game, though with some modifications. For example, you can now play multiplayer 1 vs 1, aliens vs x-com with all the good parts included, such as base building and researching. We are currently updating the graphics as well. Check out our project at http://ufotts.ninex.info/ There is a demo you can try but it´s pretty outdated. We will soon release a new version which is much more stable and fun to play. Cheers!
OK, I do understand that this is a trailer but, com on, X-Com without base creating and without geoscape ? I could understand the 3rd person tactical shooter part of the game, but this one instead of the good old turn based action part of the game, the rest of the game should be the same as it was in '93 only now with 3d fancy graphic, if it's needed.
Are you serious??? Blob aliens. Couldn't get more original than that 2K Marin? Or at least bring back the original aliens. I know it's just the trailer but I already feel disappointed.
@Gelugon_baat Lol yeah I guess I meant mod. I didn't think of it as modding back then. It was just going into a file and hacking around until you made things the way you wanted them to be. I learned a ton from that. That and my crappy computer that broke pretty much daily (which is why I can fix pretty much anything.)
Like the alien symbiote in spiderman.... Cant believe there using the XCOM name to get a cheap FPS buck. They could of really gone to town and revamped the old titles or anything but this...grrrr
@Gelugon_baat Yeah sorry about missing the dash. I remember that I had the dash and then I backspaced to fix my capitals and I must have deleted the dash and never fixed it. X-COM is somewhat important to me too. I'm not going to launch a law suit or anything but I see this game here as a bit of an insult. X-COM was the first thing I ever hacked. It was so easy back then. Just open a hex editor and go at it. I played that game so much when I was younger but I was never very good at it. Eventually I wondered if it's possible to change the rules, so X-COM managed to teach me a lot even though it was never intended for that.
When I read the title X-com..... I was like this year of games is freaking awesome, Then I just watched the clip and I was like CONNNNN!!!!!!!!!! I was so pissed I shouted Star Track and Im not even that big of fan of Star Track. Anyway, I loved the old version so freaking much.... most people here already described why the old game was so good, so why change it to a FPS..... it might have potential but I highly doubt it and one other thing, why are the monsters oil balls. Why not brain suckers that actually would of caught my interest. I do like the fact it kept study alien with the pictures that gave me some sort of hope. I would need more information about the game before disliking or liking. - welcome to Tim Horten's, How may I help you...."hmm.... give me a dozen brain suckers to go please.".
Let's just say it as it is: This is a travesty for X-Com. It's a travesty for PC gaming, it's a travesty for video gaming in general. It is yet another sign of all AAA titles being shooters and retro gaming growth (original X-Com anyone?!) continuing in leaps and bounds. The DOSBox utility has had 5 million downloads. This game will sell half that in total and less than 1 million on PC. It will be another death knell for modern multiformat gaming where all games are now written for the lowest common denominator and originality only comes from retro and indie titles! Flame me if you want, but it had to be said....!!!.
Although this game looks like it might be good and i might even like it, i feel insulted that the use the X-COM name for it, my favorate genrer is tactical squad based games like X-COM and UFO: Afterlight etc, tho i do enjoy the occasional FPS. The other special thing about X-COM is the open play style, random attacks, reasearch development, training your teams, these are all things we think of when we hear X-COM, where is that here?
Never followed the X-COM games myself but I will say that this doesnt seem to be straying far from 2k's Bioshock games. The shooting mechanics look very similar and it has that same strange kind of atmosphere, as well as looking like its set in a similar time (probably using same 40's style music etc.) Nothing wrong with that as Bioshock was good but lets hope they're not simply relying on the success of those games and just slightly changing the premise for further projects.
now this is my kind of game :) looks good. didnt think much of the black smudges though, would be better as something else i think.part from that got potential. This was actually the kind of game i wanted x-com to be namely a first person shooter.
@Gelugon_baat Thanks for lumping me in with everyone else, even though I spelled X-Com correctly in my post in the first place. Jerk. Besides, I actually like the idea behind this game. It just doesn't feel like X-Com.
I'm going to risk getting flamed here, as I was recently on my Eve Online Alliance forum and Facebook. I've been a fan of X-COM still my university days in the early 1990's. It is a work of art and is responsible for my current love of gaming (Let's not mention Enforcer). I was really disappointed when Microprose folded and it's IP's were strip mined by Microsoft and Hasbro. I think Take- 2 is following the "Lucas Method", in other words "If you can't do sequels, do prequels". From memory the lore of "X-COM: UFO Defence" states that various countries had been fighting the UFO threat independently for some time before a botched Japanese operation led to the UN (Security Council?) creating X-COM. The point is that there is scope for just about anything prior to the events of "X-COM: UFO Defence". Don't get me wrong, I would love it if Take-2 had been working on "X-COM: Alliance" but I doubt that will ever happen. So all we can do is wait and see what happens. PS: Just remember that Fallout 3 didn't turn out so bad.
Huh. You know, consider my curiosity piqued, now. I grew up on the old X-Com games and they were great, tactical turn-based games. This....doesn't look for feel anything like it. I think this could have been served better to call it something OTHER than X-Com and become its own franchise.
I will give this game a shot. That screen where the black gew went on that mans face and the man went crazy and fell was awesome.... It looks like it may be fun. Much like the rest of you, I was really hoping for an updated squad based strategy game (When will they learn...) Hopefully they will be able to keep the "creepy" feeling the original X-COM had to it at least.
As much as I want a new xcom game I have to say this looks like Bioshock in Pleasentville. I haveto say I am saddened after seeing this. Why can't there be a true good new xcom? or WHERE is the original XCOM ON XBOX LIVE? for that matter why dont we have all theold pc games on live?
This just reminded me of those Destroy all Humans games, obv you aint being an alien this time. I never played the old XCOM games but i'm onto what theyre about. Can understand how fans would be disapointed by this.
The game itself looks promising, but I REALLY had hoped for an squad based strategy game. The original X-Com game was one of my all time favorite strategy games. Build bases all over the world, hire people to defend the planet, dissect aliens, etc. The was fun. ~Dako Guyver
