I really didn't get on with War Thunder.  Not enough depth to be a sim, not enough fun to be arcade game.

It is very pretty, and I love the idea, I just couldn't get on with it.  Sticking to DCS.

Great review, thanks

The draw distance on the game Engine is comparable to Arma3 ,  But you would be lucky to get 15FPS in arma3 EVEN with a half decent card as its not very well optimized.

But from what Ive seen elsewhere you have not really experienced the game until its with the Oculus Rift devkit 2

wat he says is true and they're the same reasons why I play WT instead of WoWP. But then I still play WOT bcause there are still some problems with WT:GF. lets see how it goes later on in the future

I've played both and let me tell you that this guy knows what he's talking about. Great video, well done!

you should take a look at rise of flight. not a fan of its bussiness model, but still, very realistic.

I agree. I played WoWP and I can safely say that WG never planned for it. The engine is simply not suitable while its not optimised either. WT runs better, has a better flight model, and better graphics. Only the tanks can't be compared since they are trully different.

Great video!  Other GS staff take note... he stuck to the game.  Not any BS political crap, no how there aren't enough women pilots, or how this victimizes someone... just stuck to the game at hand.

This game is a good time, but I wasn't about to pony up the $$$$ to get the packs available for purchase.

I would really, really, really just rather have a sequel to Crimson Skies. There aren't enough killer dogfighters out, this one is good but not great enough to keep me coming back. I switched gears a while ago and have not been back.

Okay  think this video won me back to War Thunder. I tried Warplanes for a while and some Tanks too, but it does feel awfully arcady. They look great and I admire them. But just not for me. I tried War Thunder shortly after but had become burnt out on the whole free2play Airplane game because of World of Warplanes and didn't give War Thunder the time I should have. Thanks Gamespot for helping me again.

this game does tank battle better too, just saying.

Heck. That was a good video comparison/review of War Thunder. I hope this guy does more vids.

Best review of a game I've heard from gamespot..... in a long time.

Fun game. But being team killed or singled out by PC players is annoying. PS4 population is dying. Please add PS4 only lobbies.

"Warplanes feels like an arcade game" well that's because it is. People seem shocked when they realise that. I might also add that so does Warthunder when you play arcade mode (if you think landing at 200mph without breaking apart is realistic then I think you need to crack open some pilot diaries), which is arguably the mode the majority of people play the majority of the time. That's why I tend to roll my eyes when people talk about warthunder's realism because chances are half the players haven't touched the sim mode. Great game though, I've had a blast with both this and Warplanes.

The guy doing this review should get more time in videos / commentaries. Very smooth voice and reading of the lines, It sounds like  he is talking to himself rather than reading off of a page.

yeah this game really does its job as a flight sim. Very realistic and also fun when you want it to be.

Seriously the physics are as real as I have ever seen, and ive been playing PC everything since 1997

Got that game on my PS4, and it's 100% broken.  Problem is the dev decided to not even bother to adapt buttons and interface to the PS4.  The result is a poor and difficult to navigate experience.

The comparison with WoWp is imminent, but the only thing that Wargaming have made better is the interface. Nothing beats the thrill of downing a B-25 with your Bf-109 :)

Was not interested in this game in the slightest bit until i watched this video

i have been playing war thunder for more than an year now, its pretty good but I still wish that they make a game exactly like it but with modern jets

Great piece. I haven't played any type of flight sim in a long time, but I've been watching a ton of military channel and I think I will check this out.

I have been playing this game for year and a half, and to be honest this is a good and fun game to play, it's not pay to win and yes it will take some time to get to the good stuff especially if you what to play with more than 1 nation but if you stick with one, it will be better. I found the jet planes are little bit overrated, so just go to level 4 planes and enjoy.

I should give this a try - haven't tried a combat flight sim in a long time

I enjoyed playing the Arcade mode of the game but i was bit lost when it came to unlocking planes and other things.

I heard this was pay to win game and if you didn't pay, it takes forever to get the good sh*t. Anyone play this game here?

Hmm, some cool features.  I like that you get rewarded for a successful crash landing, nice touch for immersion and realism.

I have around 1,000 hours into War Thunder. Yeah, it's that good.

World of Warplanes is just horrible. Was better in Alpha and then turned to garbage after. But even in alpha it still stunk.

@penpusher HP rather than realistic damage system of WoT/WoP is the big detractor from it and makes it feel really arcade-like.

@tcmentzer He did a comedy piece a while back for Company of Heroes 2 that I thought was fricken hilarious. People tore him to pieces in the comments though. Not sure why.

@fredyellowone  It takes much longer to learn to play it on PS4. Maybe using some. Maybe using some alternative device, like mouse/keyboard or joystick becomes easier. Dont forget than the game is still an open beta.

@lorider25 Is not a pay to win game. Premium planes have the same chances to normal planes in battles. But getting a premium account for days, months, or 1 year you can make a good difference getting research points or silver lions (main currency of the game).
If you want to try the game you can get a welcome reward (50 golden eagles: premium currency in game) using my referral link: http://warthunder.com/en/registration?r=userinvite_6850360

@lorider25 well it takes time to unlock everything yes but thats the same as other similar type games in the end they need to make money to keep the games going.. but its not pay to win as you are basically paying to get xp faster and cash faster but that does not mean you will win.

Also the premium planes you can buy jsut give you an additional xp bonus but are not any better than the normal planes.

I would also like to point out that all the planes and different tiers are great funto fly not just the jets. I have a few nations qutie high but I also roll back to the starter planes now adn then because they can be just as much to fly as any of the other planes. You are also only put against planes of a similar level.

Banefire76
Banefire76

@lorider25 I have played it quite alot, i have unlocked all planes up to and including tier 3 and have unlocked a few tier 4 planes.
I have spent $0 on this game and refuse to spend any because i don't want to support microtransactions in any game, but yes now at this level (tier 4) it does take an ungodly amount of hours to grind xp to upgrade your planes fully.

Still it was a fun game up to this point and as much as i would have preferred to drop $60-$100 on a retail version and kept playing it, i enjoyed what i have played and don't miss it at all since there are so many other games out there that give you as much or more enjoyment at a much more reasonable retail cost.

P.S. I played the PS4 version and recommend a great deal of patience and an affinity for grinding if you want to get anywhere with the game as it stands.

@lorider25  It does take alot of effort to get better stuff, but not impossible and you don't have to pay for it. There are a few planes you can only buy, but the cool planes such as Spitfire's and Mustang's become available just by playing the game. The user interface takes some understanding at the start. I think i spent in total around 5 GBP ($8) on the game that was only to get more experience points for the my crew. I think for a free to play game it's pretty damm good. Give it a try.

@spikepigeo to each his own haha, Personally I give the guy SSS for style points. Its nice to hear somebody who honestly just knows these things because he WANTS to, not because its his job!
