Watch Dogs E3 2012 Lighting Mod - Graphics Comparison
This Watch Dogs mod by user TheWorse adds depth of field, bloom lighting, bokeh, proper rain lighting, and myriad other effects, but how does it stack up when put to the test?

Once again modders make a pc gamer's life a bit more entertaining, these guys do this for free and for the community, which I am really thankful for! Good job guys!
Not sure what your bias is Gamespot, but it looks like the gamma settings are different between the two videos - the modded one having terrible gamma and/or contrast and brightness settings. I also suspect they were using the oldest version of the mod they could get their grubby little hands on.
For future reference, if you're making a video showing off pretty graphics, for the LOVE of PETE turn on vsync.
In other news Gamespot got payed by Ubisoft to make a community mod that ACTUALLY improves performance and graphics look bad.
What is this, IGN? That video is complete BS, I installed this mod about a week ago and it looks way better than this.
As others have noted this "comparison video" is bullshit. Installed the .8 mod last night and was floored at the difference. I expected to take a performance hit, but I can confirm what so many others have said: with the mod installed I actually got *better* framerates and no stuttering.
Not looking forward to how the Division's graphics will be "streamlined" to achieve "parity" on all platforms.
The problem is this video only show the comparison between the base WorseMod and vanilla game. The game already has downgraded visuals for PC and washed out colors so if you wish to see what Ubisoft really snatched from PC in favor of those crap gen consoles then use this mod with SweetFX and see the difference yourself.
Ubisoft is asking their loyal customers to pirate their games with the way they have treated us lately, not buying another one of their games without trying it first
Trying to simulate DOF does not make a game look better IMO. DOF happens in real life due to focus of the eye, and when you change what you focus on it instantly changes to make it clear again. That does not happen with the simulation. It is about where you position your "curser" (center of the screen).
I really do not know why people think that makes it look better. It is inferior.
@kenundrum7 gamespot just set dof to maximum, the mod activate a bunch of other stuff but they decided to max the worse setting for some reason.
I honestly couldn't stand the game anymore. It's not an open world game you can have a lot of replay value with. I sold my Xbox 360 copy on Amazon, and couldn't have cared less. The graphics were always good in my opinion, but since this game could only be compared to GTA5, it couldn't live up to it's expectation.
@tweakgame Oh, hello Ubsisoft paid poster!
To bad this game didn't live up to its hype... sure, it's successful (due to the hype for 2 years) ...
But was honestly not near what I expected....
PS: cool mod
So it's a Depth of Field mod, got it.
Honestly, that interior monitor wall bit looked exactly the same on both versions.
@KBABZ It's not merely a DOF mod. If that's all you saw you should take another look at the lighting specifically. The shadows and the bloom are different, the light interacting with water/rain is different among a bunch of other things. Then there's Maldo's texture mod which was integrated with the more recent version of TheWorse mod.
No.. PC Masterrace got pooped on again due to crappy consoles...
Then there's my favorite...
Minecraft.. one of few games to run 1080P @30+ FPS on consoles...
So turning on a foolish looking DOF effect is considered to be 'E3 level' graphics ? I really pity some PC gamers for jumping up and down on this mod. Sure Ubisoft shouldn't have 'locked' these settings down, but after having seen them in action on my PC, I am glad they disabled them. The game looks WORSE with this mod on. And Gamespot, it seems you guys love your screen tearing. There is this little thing called 'Vsync'.. just saying.
@starjay009 the mod is not completed
@starjay009 VSync has only recently become a good thing.. and still in most cases you get a better more visceral experience with it off..
It looking worse is your own opinion, and it's one that very few people share.......
@starjay009 shut up
Reading the first 5 - 10 comments on this.... I'm done man. I can't stand the negativity on the forums here. I hereby vow to never read comments on this site again. You people are a bitter bunch. Flame on, assholes.
A lot of people are angry due to waiting two years for what was supposed to be an awesome game only to have it watered down due to consoles underpowered hardware... Those of us with more than simple integrated graphics on a laptop/ipad look forward to games that bring $5,000 PCs to their knees @ max settings...
Graphics are fairly easy to make look beautiful today, especially on PC. Can use ANY API you wish and utilize any technology you want. Gameplay comes first... but the graphics are a STRONG second..
It's 2014... not 1991... 4K/8K video is here/near... and the consoles cannot even push 4K...
To take a screenshot or two, maybe, but to play and have fun? Absolutely NOT, I'm having headaches just watching this video.
@GabrielOnuris u can turn depth of field down
Idk if I should try this mod, I am running it on high settings and it is working fine. maybe later :)
Enjoying the game so far.
Can one tell me though, why should I buy cars in the "cars on demand" app when I can just use any parked car and get no penalty for it? lol
@meedokicky You basically have unlimited money and it doesn't cost you to get a car delivered once you have already 'purchased' it.
Plus, if you have a sports car you always wanted and it's not on the road, then it's best that you call and it will 'spawn' on the nearest parking space.
"How's that for fast?"
video tearing all over the place, the Depth of Field was input WAY too strong, and it only gave a handful of examples that don't highlight most of the differences.
I know you're a console-centric website Gamespot, but you could at least try and put some effort into your PC examples.
@BuBsay But aren't the default settings of anything 1?
Gamestop leave comparison videos to the pros and go back to taking you're bribes from you're masters.
@elaisse2 You said it man they do the worst comparable videos. They dont want to upset the money that feed them. When EA, Activision, or any other Big wigs come through the door all the GS employees start doing their Shuckin' and jivin.
Do you want me to bring up your score up a little bit master, do want me to make horrible comparison video so it wont hurt your wallet master. Thank you for big generosity master.
why would you need blur depth of field when your driving?? in cut scenes maybe but when in the city is useless
The lower quality and compression of these videos make it impossible to really see what this mod does besides DOF (which i'm sure you can turn off in the ini file if this is an enb). Otherwise judging just by this video there is no major difference worth the performance hit you'll probably get.
Honestly, I can see why they might not have wanted to implement this. It's washed out in bloom, and the depth of field effect doesn't really add anything, especially if you're trying to look off into the distance. It simply doesn't look right to me. Some bloom is fine, but this is way, way too much. It's completely unrealistic--especially when there's no fog. Saying that turning these things off is a downgrade ... I've got to disagree. The game looks decent on the PC. The mod doesn't make it look better, in my opinion. They should have left the option open to turn these on, if you prefer it.
@erik_r_nelson I am running it and I think it looks great, this video isn't a good comparison, here are some images from mine, it just makes it look like the sun is real, the lighting is great once you play with the settings a bit
Why would anyone want to have bloom enabled in their game? I never seen a single game where it did anything other than make it look worse and wash out all the sharpness of the graphical details. And at a huge performance hit. It has never made any sense.
@Qixote I can see how a lot of people wouldn't like it, but all that "light bloom" you speak of actually increases the photorealism of a game. In real life, things aren't necessarily ultra sharp and colorful (as seen in videgames). That's one reason war games are always "grey/brown/etc). As for open world games such as WD or GTA, the lighting can keep it from looking like a high-end Sims game (ultra bright and colorful).
YES, there are time yo want a game to be bright and have strong colors (ie sports games like Madden or NHL, and some racing games), but otherwise that washed-out look can be helpful to game who want to send that real-world look.
@Qixote Play Counter-Strike: Source or GO and use the terminal to completely turn off bloom, it looks terrible. Almost all games have bloom, even when you think you've turned it off, it's almost always still there.
You showed more lighting effect in the mod version then the original. But still people are saying it has better performance with the mod that's abit bad on ubisoft side. Yes I have the PC version but not played it since I first installed it.
