triple A titles are out to protect their investment and make profit, not make something unique. for example: CoD series indie games are out to make something unique and different because they enjoy doing so. just like our economy, its the death of the middle class

not to be too dramatic, but this could be the start of a revolution in video games. imagine a world where you don't buy games from EA any more. no, no, no... We don't buy games at all, period. We bypass the publishers and whole communities of gamers (you and I) directly commission developers to make the games we want. no more regurgitated, homogenized, blanket appeal, bullsh*%t major publishers force feed this industry...unless that's what we want. ;)

this is a really good video. as a indie game maker ( making a 3rd person tactical shooter not going to be like a COD rip off in UDK) this is really good information. i pay my due respects to Tim Schafer

LoL @ Lucasarts sitting on Grim Fandango, Full Throttle and Maniac Mansion IP's like idiots. What decent games have they made lately? If LA had any brains they would've held on to Schafer for dear life, what a bunch of chumps.

can't wait to see what they're going to come up with! Double Fine's games always put a big smile on my face ;)

I was an Axe guy. But I completely flip-flopped. Old Spice is all the rage now! Seriously though, LucasArts owns the rights to Grim Fandango. Don't whine for a re-release, it's not going to happen! I truly hope it will never get a remake or (God forbid!) a sequel. It's as good as it is.

I pray they do re-publish grim fandango, with some HD tweaks.

I wish they re-published grim fandango

If you did a kickstarter for Psychonauts 2 I would pay lots for that.

I loved Psychonauts. I have loved every game Double Fine has made and they are one of my favorite companies. I payed into the kickstarter as soon as I heard about it. Just knowing that the game was by Double Fine was enough for me.

I love these interview videos. Very cool to hear what goes on in the developers heads.

I think a lot people are paying to watch reality tv about double fine. If this is done right there will be more money in that then in the game.

@ RPG_Fan_I_Am "I've only played brutal legend though, I didn't really care much for the other 2." You and the rest of the world agree i think. also, psychonauts did not sell well its probably his most famous flop. again quality games that appeal to a nitch market.

Love psychonauts. it would be cool if they managed to get a sequel done.

I seriously don't think the Game Industry is narrow minded AT ALL. I mean yes Call of Duty exists. But so does "Journey" and "To the Moon" and hundreds of such games also exist and are only increasing in number.

RPG_Fan_I_Am

@El3ctrosisV2 Because that style of gameplay never really interested me to play them. Thus I didn't really care for the other 2. I didn't really mean anything by it.

@RPG_Fan_I_Am If you only played Brutal Legend, how can you not care for the other games...

RPG_Fan_I_Am

@Lamachina Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, Brutal Legend. they all sold well, and they all got high reviews. I've only played brutal legend though, I didn't really care much for the other 2.

Everything about this is awesome.

Main reason I bought an ipad 2 was to have a portable device to play the monkey island remakes and what not.

What the people want? We want ScummVM on iOS or just release the old adventure game on iOS whatever. Right now the only way to play day of the tentacle, full throttle, fate of atlantis and DIG is to jailbreak your iDevice and I really, really dont want to. I would fund ios releases of old adventure games and some older amiga only titles aswell. Its a gold mine that no one seems to use. GET CRACKING!

@ Lamachina Hardeddie was responding to your implication that the only metric by which a video game's success can be judged is how much money it makes. I wouldn't say any of Double Fine's games were huge economic successes but that is not what they are KNOWN for. They are known for creating games with vision and not watering down their vision in an ill-conceived attempt to pander to the majority. Which is why their Kickstarter was so successful.

If I close my eyes and listen to this, I'm back in the 90's where games were interesting and not just about COD and multiplayer....I love you Tim :- )

@ hardeddie "not knowing facts, being ignorant, you wont go far in this hobby." wow thats just a laughably rediculous statement. what facts are you even refering to? and how would any of that not get me far in playing video games? don't be goofy. my question was a serious one. has this guy ever made a game that sold really well? is'nt he kinda known for making games that are good but don't sell well? plus, you realize all those assumptions about me just makes YOU look bad right?

When he talks about hints and says "Have you thought about the wind", that must be from Monkey Island 2 spitting contest.

@Lamachina not knowing facts, being ignorant, you wont go far in this hobby. If you were born in times where games were just pure fun and not money grabbing controlled by corporates you would have played the following : Secret of Monkey Island, Monkey Island 2, Full Throttle, Psychonauts, Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle. And since you were born but still in diapers these came out : Brutal Legend, Stacking, Costume Quests. Oh and when your parents were still dating Maniac Mansion was released. No COD, or half finish games or DLC all bonus are unlockables the better you get.

I am so glad to hear a discussion with a developer talking about their games and not feeling that every word from their mouth is jarringly disingenuous.

Nice to actually see intelligent, honest conversation about games, instead of the hype machine that dominates everything else.

has this guy ever made a game that sold really well? or has he always just been a nitch game maker begging for money to make ANOTHER game that won't sell.
