The Point - Why The Xbox Is Losing
Danny explores how hardcore gamers are killing the Xbox One and why Kinect may not be in the box after all.
by Danny O'Dwyer on
Yep, that would do it. Danny was the first to say it, but that is the logical trajectory if Microsoft wants to stay competitive.
News flash - corporations are evil. But I'm still getting an Xbox One because history has proven they have better games - with both of their previous consoles.
Plus, I'd rather support an evil North American corporation than an evil Japanese one.
I like the fact that Microsoft is going to fail in the video game market with this next gen. I've always hated Microsoft fanboys, always dissing on the other platforms (PS2 and Wii = top tier, golden age of gaming); but now that their company has almost completely turned their back on them... HEHEHEHE. This is just too good. I will probably want an Xbox 360 at some point, over a PS3, but never an xbox one X3 The WiiU has the most exclusive games, and most obviously the best games. Long live Nintendo! :3
I always wrote here on GS that we, hardcore gamers, are the ones that our family or friends ask "Which console should I buy for you cousin?"
Am I the only one that would rather read a transcript of the video (which would take less than a minute), vs sitting and watching a video? Most of the content here is dead to me because I have more important things to do than watch someone read a teleprompter while trying to look/sound cool and important.
@dlhoff No, you're the only one.
Good show, I'm gonna try and keep up on your episodes. Salient points as well. I do sense a shift in the air with Microsoft this generation, I think their initial "this is what it is and it sucks and we're shoving it right down your throat" initial announcement has done them more lasting damage than they even realize. They will backtrack on these crap policies and plans because they are crap policies and plans and not because the buyers demand it, but I think there are a lot of gamers, myself included, that are simply ready for a change to something different this time around and Playstation 4 seems like just the ticket. The exclusives simply aren't compelling enough to assure brand loyalty any more (as much as I loved the last Halo I;'m looking at you)and no offense to the x-box diehards but there's a whole x-box online :"culture" that has become like a ICP/Limp Bizkit double bill and like going one-too-many times to the Chinese buffet I've really had enough.
I like to imagine hardcore gamers get hold of the consoles/platforms that offer great games, and that ...phanbois stick to one format which they like to the exlusion of everything else.
I'm probably being bold foreseeing this but ...I imagine both the upcoming consoles will get a whole lot of great games exlusive to their respective platforms ....so would hardcore gamers kill one platform in favour of another ? ...oookay, maybe yet I can't possibly relate to them ,and I pick up games I like as often as I can afford.
I consider myself a gamer (whether or not hardcore is for others to say) and I'll bpickup up both systems at launch. Which system I'll favour ,is up for the future to tell, and what games are released.for each of them.
History tells me, I've found the exclusives on the 360 more to my liking than those on the PS3 ,and I imagine I -might- like XBO's games better in the future . I look forward to testing games on both system.
...people insisting on one system over another ? We've had them since the NES => Master System wars Nintendo/Sega wars ,
Only people's arguments I truly understand ,are those who need to choose out of an economic perspective.
@Eldgrim Well, personally I'm probably going for PS4 first- because the way things look, they're the ones who're gonna get most of the exclusives I want. I'm a strategy and RPG fan - both western and eastern - and since western strategy games and RPGs come out on both consoles nowadays, but previous XBox iterations have libraries of eastern titles in those genres so small that you can count them on your fingers (360 seemed to make an effort early on but it pretty much petered out when PS3 finally started rolling out JRPGs), it's pretty much a no-brainer for me.
Also, I don't have a grand to spend on console hardware this fall.
@Eldgrim Economics will definitely play a roll (they always do) but I really think that it might be Playstation's time this go round. We had a PS2 in the house but never made the jump. I was planning on jumping on a PS3 when it get's really cheap but I think maybe I'll go straight to the PS4 this generation and give the x-box a rest. The WiiU is not even in the equation at all I hate to say, I LOVE my 3ds and have had every Nintendo console since the first but I just can't justify the purchase when there's nothing compelling me to play.
Most of this theory is completely wrong, including saying PS4 is winning 4 to 1. This is just clearly anti MS and he complains about them the whole time. Your theory is dumb, softcore is not going to follow to PS4. They are going to go where the sports, shooters, and tv experience is the best which is where xbox one is. The "softcore gamer" doesnt go to online sites and they don't care about who's winning. They know that xbox has exclusive deals in sports, that it's where they play their favorite shooters. These are the dude bro gamers and they aren't going to get a PS4 because it doesnt have the appeal, especially in the US. The people who are going to buy the xbox one don't care about pre ordering months in advance, they will see it come out and buy it, pre orders mean very little at this point. I'm not saying Sony isn't winning because they are, but absolutely not by 4:1. Essentially this is a very flawed logical argument and seems to just be clearly anti MS.
@ch4ppysgamerev It's hard to see your point of view when all my Xbox friends (who have only owned an xbox console) are jumping ship to PS4. You think the exclusive sports deals will stay with MS if Sony dominates the market even 2:1? Not a chance. Just like everyone in this business, the software companies are in it to make money, and they will follow the money.
@ch4ppysgamerev If they don't read game sites then how do they know about the sports deals , Tv, shooter related stuff Im pretty sure if softcore gamers are buying one console over another the decision is largely made because of price or what console their friends have so for price it goes to PS4 but I think these kinds of gamers were largely made in this generation of consoles so who knows what they will choose I don't think theirs anyway we can know if they would have pre-ordered the console because they probably weren't a gamer when they last would have had a chance (only talking about the 360 and PS3 of course) also It will probably come down to what they see will about the consoles on gamestop and random rumors about them that will differ from person to person im sure there will be plenty of people who get a PS4 because its the most powerful Console ever (it basically is) or the X box 1 because they heard the Kinect is way better and then there's the people with lots of money will get the x box 1 purely because they assume its better because its the most expensive im more with the PS4 you seem to be with the xbox1 but who knows what people will think and choose come launch day trust me man there's no way we can see how this goes because they way things turned out before was just random occurrences colliding with each other and creating the results we now love, hate, or just don't give a s@#t about one things for sure its going to be an interesting generation to watch unfold it certainly has been so far
@sirdukefillion @ch4ppysgamerev I agree with some of what you said and thank you for being rational and not an obnoxious fanboy. I just hate the exaggeration of statistics, there's no official pre order numbers and nowhere have I seen concrete evidence of 4 to 1. And the softcore gamer gets his news about new consoles through the one he has. Xbox has had all their stuff live streaming on the console and advertisements abound for the partnerships with NFL and ESPN and games. That is where the softcore gamer is gonna see their next console info. They don't look at pre order stats or ask what a hardcore friend is getting. Not to mention for all the big shooters and FIFA xbox is getting exclusive content and maps first on BF4 and CoD, with TItanfall on the way. I plan to get a PS4 in maybe a year or so when they get something that really interests me. Right now all that looks awesome is infamous (purely my opinion). and the order 1886 looks like it has potential. I have nothing against PS4 I just feels this guys argument is flawed and his message seems really anti MS. The only policy reversals have been drm, indie policy, and kinect not needing to be on. Those are all positive and what people wanted. Saying Don Matt is a policy reversal is retarded and deciding to add a headset for gamers is not a reversal.
@ch4ppysgamerev Same to you its nice to see a opinion that's not purely I hate whatever or you should love this because i do kind of crap I feel like ever every time I type or say X Box One Im going to say Xbone or Microsucks because ive seen it so damn much and I didn't know that much information was given on x box live so I think I do agree that Microsoft may have the upper hand in many areas with that being the case so are you also waiting on x Box One or have you pre-ordered one im just curious because I pre-ordered a PS4 (just a day before they weren't taking anymore orders) and just yesterday I pre-ordered watch dogs for it
@sirdukefillion @ch4ppysgamerev I have an xbox one pre ordered with BF 4 and CoD. I'm also going to get Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3 and MAYBE Ryse. Also maybe Watchdogs. Luckily my birthday is next week and I'm getting money im putting toward the X1. I'm still gonna be broke though. Then like I said PS4 will prob be in a year or two just depending on a few things.
The Casual-Hardcore-Softcore theory is quite good. I probably fall under the Softcore group, although I could care less for FPS and Sports gaming. I'm an RPG/casual gamer all the way. I've been a Sony fan since the PS1, but I find myself waiting on the PS4 and possibly getting the Wii U, partly for a new experience (might actually try those Zelda, Pikman, and Mario games I've always derided Nintendo for), and partly because I enjoy Japanese games and Nintendo seems to have had a better lineup of them. I will NEVER ever buy a Microsoft product again and that was decided way before the crap they pulled at e3.
I will never get an Xbox after what M$ did.
The fact that before they back flipped on just about everything they said F*** you to anyone who does not have a 24/7 internet connection, they will just have to buy a xbox360
does anyone else think Danny sounds like the irish bloke at the start of bioshock one who starts talking to you once you first get out the capsule??? just saying
@dannyodwyer wow it was very accurate, and well done on the point video's i think there are refreshing and it's good to see real honesty, it's just a little rare nowadays... thanks
@Burtons83 Well we're both Irish, so yea!
(Also that accent is perfectly accurate - and it was done by an American actor).
And sony is giving away free leaks when you preorder from them. HaHaHa. One thing I have learned is microsoft always stayed true. Sony like to tell you crap then change it once you have it. Ps vita should already have the remote play. Why did you take away my linux capable feature? Why did you remove the emulation for bc games? Why are there no more media storage input slots anymore. So basically sony lies to you to get your votes. Microsoft at least stood their ground when there consoles were out.
And now you can't secure content on your network after you supposedly upgraded after the big hack? You expect people to pay you 15 a month when your security is still just as bad. F that. Yall can praise sony all you want, but to me its a wait and see. Don't lie to me when i got the console then take your toys away, or don't have them at all. Still pissed about my vita because of false advertisement.
@vscott453 nice to see someone defending microsoft.
Blatently, some Sony employee's been a bit of a knob at their job, or just genuinely likes to shit where they eat. That persons probably been given the sack anyway, so who cares.
The things you're picking at, so so small. The PS4 is quite clearly the superior console, evidently from the facts given.
Already pre-ordered a PS4 and excited for it! knowing Sony as they did with the PS4 we'll see some amazing Quality exclusives while xbox most likely the same stuff like the 360 nothing but halo and Call of Duty.
I think that the consoles are almost the same. I'll be getting the ps4 because I don't want to pay 100 euros extra for a kinect camera that I don't want.
As a hardcore gamer I disagree with Danny about we ruling the industry.
Pre-orders and news reading mean nothing compared to the sheer number of casual and softcore gamers who support mediocre products, and THAT in the long run is what I fear will be our demise :(
That's what I thought too, but from what I understood, the hardcore crowd will boost the sales of the consoles, not the games!
Softcore gamers will still buy the same blockbuster games, but on the console favored by hardcore gamers/ early adopters.
