The Point - PS4 Launch: Sony's Best or Worst?
Danny takes a look at the history of PlayStation launch lineups and asks if the PlayStation 4's launch is better or worse than previous years.
by Sarah Lynch on
I have a weird thought in my head. I'm envisioning a bunch of fanboys, with a TV in one hand and their console of choice in the other, hands above their head shouting at each other about which console is better. And then I toss a Danny grenade right into the middle of it all. A few seconds later, an explosion of logic and a shockwave of maturity cover the battlefield. Everybody sits down, plugs in their consoles and start playing. The PS4 guy looks at the X1 guy's screen and says "Hey that's awesome!". The X1 guy looks at the PS4 guy's screen and says, "Hey that's sweet!". And all is well in Gamertron.
Seriously, WTH is the matter with me?
The last two times I bought a console at release date, the overpriced alpha-stage piece of **** gave up on me within 3 years.
I'll stick around until they upgraded the machine, dropped the price-tag and expanded the games library.
Does anybody feels motivated to buy a PS4/X1 "right now" for a game that is NOT in this list?
-Assassin's Creed 4
I'm just checking something
hey Danny are you ever going to do one of those a year in gamers' life videos ? because those were kinda awesome
Danny hit it on the head. Instead of all the nit-picking, whining, complaining, and criticizing either Sony's or MS's consoles and launch lineups, just remember...it's going to be nearly 10 years before we're here again. Think about that. So sit back and enjoy the next few months people.
Future Perfect wasn't a PS2 launch title. Was it?
Cheers for that video, Danny. Glad to see you've wasted no time getting back to work after your big move. Nothing like an episode of The Point to calm the soul after dealing with raging fanboys.
Oh well, back in I go.
Make sure you make the same forgiving evaluation/video when the Xbox One launches and I will call Gamespot unbiased.
Since the PS ONE came out, I have been a long gaming and PlayStation fan. My top three consoles are the Sega Dreamcast, the Nintendo Gamecube, and the PS One. Those consoles brought so much competition and community between my brothers and friends in games like Power Stone and Super Smash Bros. I used to play this game called Grandia for my PS One so much on it because my brother bought it for me, even though I can barely remember the story now. I was in 11th grade when I bought my Launch PS3, and have had it ever since. I was a lot more excited about that release than the PS4 release, but maybe it's because I am older now. Either way, I'm gonna miss using it, but I know I will enjoy my PS4. Who still has their 60 GB console with the chrome strip? It took some skill making 60 GB work towards the end lol
P.S. I never realized until writing this, but Microsoft jacked the One name for real lol
You can't beat a good console launch!! I'm 29 now and it still gets me excited like the N64 kid on Christmas Day!!
It's obvious to me that they rushed a little to get the product launched. That's why infamous and the order aren't ready yet. I think killzone was rushed slightly to be ready for launch. I'm gutted that I have to wait another two weeks. Bloody European launch dates
You can't forget the demo disc that came with the PS1. That was my favorite game for three months, alongside battle arena toshinden using FO! PS3 sucked at launch. The first game I bought for PS3 was God of war 2
Why is this guy not doing more articles? He's one of the few that seems to put up an article based on facts, not personal bias. I rarely hear opinions from him, and if I do they are simply stated and no part of the outcome is based on them. He seems to be the most down to earth on this site.
If Danny did more on the site, I'd be on this site more.
hahaha people act like Sony is dead or something because the launch was not what you expected. If Microsoft's launch blows then what? Are games finished? Nope.
Another awesome point video Danny !
I'd say clumsiness of XboxOne made this launch a little bit smoother. Hopefully people who are rich enough to get by day 1 are enjoying their out of life experience.
Sadly never been a fan of consoles, i even blame them for giving birth to "casual gaming".
*Hides in his room to avoid flaming*
The particular problem here is that their big next-gen headliners are disappointing and two of the tentpoles which were propping up the launch line up disapeared (Driveclub and Watch Dogs). It's not just quantity of launch line up it's quality. The N64 may have launched with just two games but one of those games was a killer app and the other was pretty damn good too. Sadly killer apps at launch have been in short supply for quite a while, the last one probably being Halo.
The Xbone's launch line up suddenly started to look good. Sony had been handed such a big advantage by Microsoft's failure to win over much of the core market but the reality of the launch line ups looked pretty different in contrast.
For years much of Sony's exclusive slate was carried by their massive advantage in Asia, particularly Japan. Because they aren't even launching in Japan until next year that doesn't help them with the PS4.
everyone needs to be a lot more like Danny at the end of the day its fine being loyal to sony, microsoft or nintendo but DO NOT! voice your opinion as gospel i have seen people start throwing personal insults at others over this pathetic so called console war people have their reasons for loving each console which others don't agree with and honestly who cares if you don't i have spoke to very few decent gamers but those i do we speak about each other console exclusives as a discussion we don't go on about how our exclusives are better etc. we just talk about the one thing we are all here for at the end of the day which is games!
Worst? Hmm. The PS3 press conferences and launch was just horrible. Probably the worst ever so I don't know if the PS4's would be that bad.
Considering all the momentum, all the press and excitement gained after their brilliant smoke and mirrors during the E3 conferences. . . and a little help from Microsoft's blunders. . it is somewhat shocking how much has waned.
Of course, I've believed very firmly that most of the hype generated after the PS4's E3 announcement is mostly based on their coy "no used game limitation" and "no always online" remarks. The cheaper pricetag also helped. But when you looked past all that? There wasn't really much there except multiplat indie games and Second Son. They even took a step back by charging for online and even talked a lot about media stuff, stuff that Microsoft got chastised for.
I think this waning has a lot to do with people getting over the the whole used game/always online controversy and realizing there wasn't much else there. After all, it's no longer an issue anyway; Microsoft reversed those policies so all we're left with is a $100 cheaper.
Which AGAIN, is a good argument provided you aren't swayed by the features of the Xbox or believe that the PS4 is just a PS3.5
For the PS4 part, should have just mentioned all of the exclusives and said "a bunch of games no-one cares about". PS has always been LAME.
Those 2 N64 games were GOLDEN... and they set the bar so high.
WHY Nintendo has not come up with a new Pilotwing is beyond me.
Considering the Hype. It's worse....Danny makes a point but, that was years ago with some systems it's not longer a selling point to sell only a few titles at launch. It's releasing quality and the experience of the systems as a whole. The Problem the PS4 IMO is it offers NOTHING new. Graphics are fine but, what else to change the way we play ? Maybe that is why KZ and Knack didn't fair to well in reviews. The Consoles are new the release titles are not going to be the best for any new systems over time they will get better but, don't market it as such....
Greatness Awaits....unfortunately we are still waiting.....
This guy - Danny I think? is a guy i wanna have a beer with. He just seems so laid back and like he knows how to throw a punch when needed. The proverbial mans man. Not like most of the other weirdos in gaming.
Looking through the comments... I think some of you are definitely forgetting that console launches are often lukewarm in terms of gaming. Looking back on both the 360 and PS3... those games were pretty weak. The PS4 is already off to a much stronger start, even if most of that is due to the strength of the 3rd party titles available on the system.
I think it's a better launch than the PS3, but the PS2 launch is probably my favorite launch so far. The only thing I've played so far is Killzone... it took WAY too long to get to the action, but the game is AWESOME. It's absolutely gorgeous. Can't wait to get home tomorrow and dig back into it.
It's the only exclusive I have though. The rest of the games I picked up are all multi-plat... but they're freaking great and look gorgeous as well.
IMO this is def a weaker than normal launch and the best games are multi plat sony sony cant really make a claim to them. Pretty disappointing but it def is in no way an indicator for the future success of the system. I guess at least you can get Killzone 4 and at the very least be wowed by the graphics and get a taste of what the next gen systems will have to offer on a technical lvl.
You know what? I am proud of every comment of this video no trolls, no whining, simply gamers excited about a new generation of gaming... Or those that are still holding on to great memories of this current generation consoles. Either only mature adults watch the point or the dust is beginning to settle as people begin to get their console of choice.
This is a fairly weak launch lineup. What is the best title? Resogun. That could be done on the current gen systems and certainly isn't worthy of a next gen launch title. Zzzzzz
I think games like ACIV, BF4 and CoD were ported backwards. Ubi said that developing ACIV for current gen was a nightmare
Great video. Very well done, keeping things in perspective. I'm excited about both PS4 and XBO. Even games that aren't getting glowing reviews, like Knack and Contrast--my kids and I can't wait to play 'em. By comparison, we only have maybe 2 games pre-ordered for XBO vs the 9 games we got for PS4. We're fans of both brands, but definitely lean towards the Playstation because PSN is more family friendly.
@93ChevyNut There's nothing wrong with you if this is what you envision. However there really is if this is what you see...
@coldfusion25 And in another 3 years time, the piece of **** will give up on you....... sound logic .
@Metalnoid Dead rising 3! I mean AC4 is cool but I think DR3 is the only zombie game that I can stand and that in part is what makes me want the game (technical issues be damned)!
@Metalnoid Lego Marvel. Hugely excited for that game. Second Son isn't a launch title but that'll be sweet to buy, and it's reassuring to know that I won't have to wait a whole year to get the game I REALLY want for the system, unlike the PS3.
@PlatinumPaladin Pretty sure it was supposed to be the original TimeSplitters.
@victorcom Par for the course for Danny.
@Hakkology Ach, it's probably true. At least they were the doorway to casual gaming. Something else opened it. If only we could figure out what.....
@dani_i89 lmao wow you sound like a child as if sony have ever been lame its people like you and your fanboy characteristics that will eventually destroy companies like sony and then bitch and moan when all thats left is someone like microsoft who without competition will screw you in the ass just the same as any other company with no competition
@stillfailing he sounds more level headed and sounds intelligent in some ways compared to these idiots we call fan boys, fan boys are fine but its the ones who voice their opinion as gospel than annoy the hell out of me
@bigmikeOK The gameplay could be done on current gen systems, but Resogun couldn't. The compute power used isn't possible on current gen consoles. And the visuals are breath-taking.
@presauk @Metalnoid no, I really don't in all honesty, I felt a bit more excited once I watched some of the point vids then I was before but just by looking at that list, it doesn't thrill me with excitement compared to the last few console releases. It could be down to me being older but I'm not entirely sure.
