The Point - Is Kinect Dead?
With Microsoft releasing an Xbox One without Kinect, Danny wonders what this means for the future of Kinect games development. Also John Drake drinks a Diet Coke.
police 24 in the arcade, why dont they do something similar, its such a novel idea, surely they microsoft can do better
In other words, a cynical userbase killed it. My sister has one for she and her kids and they love it.
guess xone is just more or less dead - it will take ... more then a year for the bigger titles.
All their hope was titanfall, xone sells are now dropping down to 30-40k per week again.
I wouln't wonder if the WiiU will sell better in the next weeks when MK8 launched a lot more will be sold and the MK8 Bundle is on its way too.
in the same time PS4 gets more and more avialable and is 3x or 4x higher then Xone.
Halo will be to late to change anything - 1 1/2 year till its out ... guess that will be like 10-15M more PS4s over Xones, and who knows how the WiiU will do.
MS believed in Kinect - forced buyers to take it, now they chaged that, like that chaged so much about the console.
PS4 sold since its luanched and is still not that easy to get.
That war seems to be over when MS comes up with its policy, the kinect force and so much more.
Poepel shouldn't foprget theat X360 sold beacsue it was way more cheaper, had mroe games, played burned games and were owned by a lot more people in the first years, all more or less beacasue it was an year befoe the PS3.
Everyone workin for Ms should have seen that- they cant win a head to head fight with sony ...
There isn't any reason to own both consoles for me, but the only thign you can expect from MS is Halo and Sony simply brigns a lot more good exclusives that makes the system NR1 choice for most buyers.
I always thought that Kinect had huge potential - but kept being such a missed opportunity. Ever since playing Devil May Cry 4 - I always wanted to play the sections Nero beats the hell out of big ass bosses with his Devil Bringer arm - or parts you need to mash B to execute rapid pummeling - by using motion sensor controls.
What I am saying is: don't drop the controller - and make a all out Kinect games: that never works, that makes gamers look ridiculous, and loses its novelty after a few tries.
However: make a game like Devil May Cry for example - with full controller support: but allow some moves or beat-down sections to be used with Kinect motions - instead of quick time events or auto cut-scenes: and you got a perfect combination.
It doesn't take much - to pull that baddass uppercut - and then keep combing it with the controller.
developers have had years now to make that must have kinnect game. If one existed it would have sold us on it, but I dont think it has any application for hardcore gaming.
it's sad that people who can make awesome games for Kinect, have to put up with Microsoft's bumbling. PS: the gray hair streak is looking good Danno.
Well, I wouldn't say its dead. But, think taking the kinect out was good choice for those who don't want it. I personally didn't buy xbone on release day because of the kinect. I don't care for it at all and didn't feel like I should have to waste my money on something I wouldn't use. Glad I waited for for the xbone without the kinect.
I agree about the potential. It's been wins (XBox One Fitness, try the kick boxing workout after a long day dealing with people at work!) and losses (Sports Rivals). And while I don't agree with Danny about the interface, I don't use voice to move around in it much. Though I think any piece of modern tech should come with a camera/mic baked-in MS pretty much had to make this decision as Sony dropping their camera on launch to make a lower price point has cost MS too much in sales.
Now there is less reason for designers to make that great, hoped for, Kinect game but there would be zero reason if X1 keeps getting out sold by PS4.
YES! It is DEAD! Your abysmal sales numbers have spoken! So let it go!
A few years from now people will point and laugh when they see something that STILL supports motion control.
And while you're at it, abandon any ideas you may have regarding 'Illumiroom'. Gamers want VR headsets NOT projection gimmicks for their living rooms.
It's dead, no outside publisher will make stuff for Kinect, knowing they'd be adding a further gate of entry. Microsoft's in-house and 1st Party games will include it, but again, the Kinect-only experience is dead outside of indies/ b-games.
Also, this is a massive knife in the back for Harmonix, I hope the apology letter is written on a slab of platinum or something.
It's no where near dead and those without kinect will most likely get one after they realize what they are missing.
I remember you calling this Kinectless move a few months back, I think in an earlier 'The Point' you said Microsoft would do this. Kudos for not doing an 'i told you so' episode Danny.
Good episode. Wait a minute!! Did I see that correctly?! 25 cents for a can of soda?! I want to work for that company!
The problem is from the beginning they have been completely unorganized on what they want to do with the XBOX One. They haven't found the identity, and really that is because I feel they rushed it out of the gate just to get it released at the same time as the PS4. I mean it is blatantly obvious just by having some of the features that were on an almost 8 year old console at the time not be available on the predecessor. It also shows how much of a disaster it has been considering the big mouths that were spewing half the crap from the get go where shown the door and are no longer part of Microsoft. With that being said at least the changes they have made have been the ones everyone has wanted. Unfortunately, at the same time a lot of gamers are hardcore crybabies that actually feel as though that these multi billion dollar companies are in a special relationship with them and require a lot more than changes to make them happy. I for one took the resignations (Really the firing) of the CEO and half the people that where part of the entertainment division at Microsoft as the real apology from the big wigs to us fans of their products.
@d-man um, i think the moral of the story is the games killed it cause they suck.
@Bavoke It's Diet Coke.
I want illumiroom, you must be crazy or know nothing about it....if you want a system that does the same thing the systems did five years ago maybe I wouldn't want it but I'm about moving forward regardless which company it is...stay in the past.
@cynicritic I want a deep gaming experience with a wired controller, a sofa and a bag of chips like old times. Companies need to focus on making good, inventive games instead throwing lots of gimmicks with shitty games that barely works. Just give us that kind of stuff as an OPTION at least.
@cynicritic It's far from dead. I'm sure we'll see some decent games for the Kinect eventually. Microsoft needs to have more apps utililze it better,. Right now, it's not doing much.
@cynicritic No. No motion controls and NO VR. Thanks.
@jonny_dutch Maybe harmonix shouldnt put all their eggs in one basket.
@Blazen702 Nope. I haven't liked Kinect since the first one on 360. I've had my 360 for a very long time and I never once thought I was missing out because I don't have Kinect.
I'm glad M$ has awakened to the fact that a lot of people don't want it.
@Blazen702 No not gonna happen, the only way people will go out and get one is if the release a game everyone wants that has to have one. Ive got one and dont even plug it in anymore its just not worth anything.
@OJ99 everyone knew it was going to happen, it was just a question of when.
@xscrapzx Why use the corporate term of whiner to describe gamers? You aren't a whiner if you point out a company is doing wrong.Gamers that do that are consumer aware. And just changing doesn't hide the fact MS tried to get over on their consumers and they literally were trying to control how people use the systems they brought from them. Truth be told if they really were for consumers in the 1st place then they wouldn't be in the predicament they're in now. They wouldn't have had to change.
@yungray23 Oh, Illumiroom? The entheogenic possibilities are endless!
@chippiez Then you haven't been a gamer very long have you kid?
@chippiez I would have to agree there is no way I want to wear some stupid headset to play games. Ive seen people try VR before and it has never panned out and I dont think it will this time either.
however give me something like PUNCHOUT, thats FULLY FUNCTIONAL not that crap 'fighters within'
give me something like FORCE UNLEASHED, all the fancy hand gesture to do force push, the force choke whatever you call it, heck i'll even use that ice cream cone on the PS3 as a light sabre lol
now i probably won't be playing it in front of 20 of my friends and look silly, but if i was alone its a nice way to stay in shape, i mean PUNCHOUT remember the dodging and punching ducking etc on the NES, theres no way you can beat 2 guys without sweating
come on kinect, show me a PUNCHOUT clone that works better with kinect and i'll buy an x1 with my next pay lol
i already got PS4 day 1 purchase...yep waited 3 months for it to ship
i'll be getting the wii u next week,if kinect can pull off my request i'll let it back into my gaming family, i have a xbox 360, PS3, wii, PS4 and Wii u (next week)...i got it in that order as well lol...come on xbox 1, pull through and join the family lol
@KimCheeWarriorX @179107199999 @xscrapzx many children are whiners however I'm speaking of adults who are consumer aware. If it weren't for them MS would've gotten away with way worse. Too many fanboys are getting in the way of common sense. What's funny is they whine when someone puts their favorite company on the spot. Fanboys are true whiners
