The Point - Is it time to buy an Xbox One?
A new Titanfall bundle and a price drop in the UK. Danny wonders whether now is the time to buy an Xbox One, or if should you should save your cash for later in the year.

Oh, I have a ton of games to complete on my Ps3 -spent most of the last gen on 360- but with 2-4 months between each game I'll be getting on my Ps4 when it arrives, I'll have plenty of time to hop back and blast through them. Still though, any Elder Scrolls is one of those 'default' game for me. Stalker too. I don't play it that often, but every few years I'll dust it or call of Pripyet down and journey back into the radioactive twilight zone.
Had 6 months last year of down time due to shoulder surgery. Once I could play both handed I pushed Skyrim over 1000 hours. And still I had stuff to do.
Games that I have yet to complete. Metro: 2033, Metro: Last Light, The Witcher 2, Touchlight 2, Cysis, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Sleeping Dogs, Civilization 4, etc. Yeah, these Steam sells are great!
@youngzen69 TBH. You can't really complete Civilization.
@fadersdream what do they tell you?
I sunk over 200 hours into Skyrim just on side quests. The only downside of is that by the time you finally get around to playing the main quest your character is so powerful there's not much challenge.
I did the same thing in Morrowind. The final battle was over so fast I thought it was bugged.
Good subject this week.
@cratecruncherSame here with morrowind, I put off the final battle for weeks, when I got around to it, i was so powerful it was over in seconds, so I went and had a go at
@kyphe @cratecruncher In the whole series Morrowind was my favorite. I got on pretty good with Vivec but that Almalexia gal got way outa line and I had to put her down. Good times....
@cratecruncher I like Morrowind, but the dice rolling system kills it for me when comparing it to Oblivion or Skyrim. The combat feels so stupid, I just want to explore.
I may never get any of the next gen consoles. None of the games are really that impressive. They look pretty but the gameplay isnt really groudnbreaking or have any sort of profound storyline. Odds are I wont get one until 2015 or maybe never if the games dont get better. Dark souls 2 is really the only game I have been anticipating in 2014.
@binderdundat In the same boat. Might get an XBone for Netflix on my TV though, and an occasional Forza foray.
The thing is, even now before Titanfall, there's more of a reason to buy an XB1 over a PS4. Yes, while people are no longer talking about Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Ryse & Forza 5 because they're 4 month old launch titles, and if you haven't played them then it doesn't matter. There's also the Project Spark Beta that just became available also.
I also own a PS4 and, from experience, there's even less reasons to buy that. The only one half-assed reason to buy a PS4 and that is Killzone. The PS4's only worthwhile exclusive that I've been forcing myself to push through because it's just soo damn boring. I've already beaten Ryse (an awesome God of War style game - Reviewers really fucked that score up), Dead Rising 3, Assassin’s Creed 4 and Battlefield 4 on the XB1. After playing those, Killzone is a drag... literally. So that supposedly super powerful hardware means shit when there's hardly a reason to turn it on.
So aside of being supposedly weaker, even though Ryse is the best looking game between BOTH consoles, the XB1 will get a lot more use than the PS4 will at this point in time. Definitely something to consider.
@Vodoo I figured Ryse was unfairly shat upon. Can you elaborate on why you like it? What's better or worse than God of War 3? Is it in anyway deep like Ninja Gaiden where player skill matters or is it more the QTE fest the haters speak of?
short answer no!, long answer hell no! in buying a xbone. There is literally no exclusivity coming to the console which for MS is bad, don't get me wrong the ps4 isn't much better but people are happy enough toting by with the psn+ games every month to care as much (i know i don't). but if you have a good pc or a ps3 or a 360 there really isnt much of any games to entice you to buy the xbone at all.
the bundle with titanfall will help but its impact is going to be limited because they chose to not to make is xbone exclusive only, (if they did sales would shoot through the roof) unless MS stop supporting the 360 and go purely on the xbone then really the transition to xbone will be very VERY long, unless then lower the price so much more.
@neowarrior121 The only game I'm interested in for the X1 -beside project spark- is Titanfall and I can get that for my PC, but I know down the line an avalanch of exclusives will be out for the Ps4, as has always been for the Playstation line. Exclusives wise my 360 has been a brick for the last two years.
Or you could get a PC, PCs are cheaper, there are loads more games and they have better graphics and gameplay. PC MATSTER RACE.
@neowarrior121 @DarkLight748 Building a PC isn't cheaper, but owning one in comparison to the life of a console is. Games on average are 30% less money (and it may be even less), which over the course of time adds up. After purchasing 10-20 games You will have saved the cost of the PC (depending on how much you spend). I average about 15 games a year, easily, so in the course of 5-10 years, a PC saves me a significant amount of money.
@DarkLight748 can we nip this in the bud, buying a pc from scratch is not cheaper and if you made one for the xbone price its only going to be equivalent to it at most and still not be better then a ps4. now if you are upgrading a pc i would agree with you.
@cratecruncher @McGregor @neowarrior121 @DarkLight748 I wish all these PC master race retards would just stop.
Most of us own a gaming rig and a console for the exclusives.
They blather on about 'master race' but cry and make petitions for games like GTA, meanwhile people who own consoles are playing GTA
I think, given how lackluster the console exclusives are at the moment, people should really consider investing in a gaming PC.
I took the plunge a few months ago, after being underwhelmed by both the XBO & PS4 and I can honestly say, it's the best decision I've ever made.
Sure, it cost me a few hundred bucks more than a new console, but I've now got access to an endless archive of great games. I can replay games like Fallout 3, Skyrim & Dragon Age with hours of FREE, user-created content & mods. I can pick up great games for peanuts: Fallout 3 - GOTY Edition cost me 5 bucks, brand new. I also picked up Jade Empire - Special Steelbook Edition for 2 bucks !!!
On top of all this, I can still play all the latest games, barring a few console exclusives that aren't really worth bothering about anyway.
@tizmond I have a gaming PC. I don't need two. What I do want is a console that will play exclusives that don't come to the PC. The PS4 does that nicely. Thanks for throwing around PC fanboy crap on a console wars news story though. I always love reading all the crap the insecure "master race" likes to throw around. Stop being a fanboy and enjoy all types of games. You'll be happier. In a year there will be plenty of games to play on the new consoles. Obviously PC has a bigger back catalogue. If I want to play PC games, I'll jump on my PC. Now stop talking. Thanks. ;)
@Vylsith Wow, you are a jerk
@chrisx2k3 I know right? If you don't buy a Xbox One how could you enjoy exciting new experiences like Gears of War, Halo, Forza, and Fable? Hopefully Microsoft decides to keep pushing out exclusives the entire generation. As much as I've grown to dislike the Xbox (I loved the original) I'd feel pretty bad for gamers who buy the Xbox One only to have Microsoft do the exact same thing they did last generation. Hopefully Microsoft learns that some gamers actually like to play games that aren't online shooters too. I'm not holding my breath on that one though...
Nah , still offers nothing new or improved, i'll stick with what i have. This console is so underwhelming that there is no price that would make me interested... to bad...
All 3rd party titles look much better on PC and pS4 then on this outdated machine , so why bother..
Just get it on PC, it is a Source game, look at the specs... runs on anything. Why are people acting like this is an exclusive for the Xbox One? Not only is it on PC, but it looks WAYYYYYYYYYYYYY better on PC, just look at the Digital Foundry comparison. Then you have the fact you do not have to pay a gold subscription to play it like you do on the Xbox One and when the servers go down in the future, there will be third party ones on PC.
@gajbutler Blah blah blah....I'll take an XBO over any priced gaming rig (unless I was re-selling it to flip). It's all about the exclusives. Forget Digital Foundry, damn pixel counters.
@gajbutler DOn't forget the initial purchase price of the game. I preordered titanfall on PC for 36 euros. Beat that, xbone
@chrisx2k3 @gajbutler Everyone has different tastes. I'm not really one for Microsoft exclusives. Not really into online shooters. The pixel counters comment was incredibly bitter though. Pretty hilarious kid.
My favorite part of Titanspot is that people who have already declared they do not play FPS, and they obviously don't, will come on and be like: Halo sux! Titanfall is another COD! Shooters are dumb!
Cool. No one cares that you don't like shooters, we can see that. So don't come to the article.
@grenadehh Same people all the time flapping their gums about games that no matter how good they actually are they wouldnt play them anyway. I dont roll into articles about systems or games that i have no interest in, but then again im not a troll so i wont probably understand it. If you are burnt out on shooters thats fine, but obviously not everyone is or BF4 and COD wouldnt sell so well.
@grenadehh Since the video only talks about Titanfall very briefly and compares the Xbox One to the PS4 constantly, you might want to reconsider your statement. It's a pretty ridiculous one. Either you didn't actually watch the video, or you're just not the brightest crayon in the box. Either way, do yourself a favor and stop talking.
"Sometimes you expect a game to give you happy and when it doesn't you get sad," he said, whilst showing a clip of Thief.
Guess which pre-ordered game I'm currently waiting to finish downloading updates so I can play it? :(
@kevicus12 Some people really liked it. It has problems, but I think the next gen hype hurt the game more than anything. It's not Ryse or Knack status by any means. Reviewers want next gen games to instantly be far more amazing than the last generation. It's not going to happen overnight. The game isn't amazing, but it's still slightly better than most games. I wouldn't pick it up full price, but you won't feel completely ripped off probably.
When a $150 graphics card that doesn't even need a power source can max out the biggest hype train on a $500 console, NO, it is not time to buy that console you muppet!
@Shewgenja Hater. I love my XBO. Don't give a damn whether or not you approve.
@Shewgenja It's not about the graphics or performance, it's about the games and consoles always have at least a few really good exclusives that won't make it to PC.
@Shewgenja Max out, no. Also Titanfall runs on a 10 year old engine. A phone could run it at 60 fps.
@Shewgenja Ummmm, it still needs a power source genius. It just requires far less power than most cards so most PCs won't require a PSU upgrade. I understand your argument, and it's a semi-valid one, but you still have to build the rest of the PC and it will still cost you about $600 to $700 for a system that will likely be as powerful as the $400 PS4 once developers learn how to properly use (and Sony updates the SDK to make it easier to use) the low level API. PCs bleed efficiency compared to consoles. Not to mention you get one fourth the amount of GDDR5 for $150.
The real issue is that you're comparing PCs to consoles. Stop it. They bother offer a different gaming experience. They always have. They always will. Some games are cross platform, but many only come out on PC or consoles. If you really want to enjoy all that gaming has to offer, you need both.
@chrisx2k3 @Shewgenja If you honestly didn't care, then you wouldn't reply. Just be honest. ;) His comment is ridiculous and fairly ignorant (it obviously still requires a power source since it connects to the motherboard and operates at 60W), but if you bothered to take the time to reply, then you obviously care. Either that or you're bored and just like arguing like me. =D
@thugass18 He probably doesn't know that the topic of discussion is the new NVidia GPU. Figured he was talking about the PS4 instead. Not everyone is a nerd like us. =P
