The Point - Console Digital Purchase Problems

With the announcement of PlayStation Now, Danny wonders if consoles should should stop selling us digital games, and just sell us access to them?

This would be awesome...if I had a 3Mbps connection to play it on. As to the subject of games lasting only as long as the console, I haven't had the pleasure of purchasing something obscure enough never to show up again. When my first Xbox was stolen and I had to get another I'd only downloaded UNO and a few DLC pieces. But everything's in my history. Even Marvel vs Capcom 3 and you can't buy that anymore.

This is one of the main reasons that I've gone back to the PC in recent months. As Danny said; my PC and gog.com purchases are always there.

Xbox live has a simple solution, and most likely PlayStation has too, backwards compatibility? your stats and achievements can be passed on from old gen to new gen, so why cant the games? make the rule that when the game is used on a newer console, it cannot be played again on the older console unless its on the HDD of that console...

how to cost this...

Xbox you have GOLD membership why not have Platinum for Backwards compatibility for your games...

PlayStation could do something similar?

in relation to older games like NHL Hits 2003 which was available on original Xbox but lost to the world of availability where do we find them?

in the end is it just worth having 6 consoles and 2 PCs just to play all the games you loved and all the games you will love in the future?

I have a big problem with physical games being replaced by streaming services: They allow the companies to keep absolute control over the games. They can increase the price or just take them away at any time. Whenever they release new games, they can restrict access to old games to makes us buy the new stuff.

They are snatching control away from us and I think it smells bad.

This is a console games purchase problems, it´s NOT a digital only thing. You can´t play your physical copies on next gen either.

The problem I have with going digital, most of the greedy internet companies like Version, Optimum, and probably in the near future Time Warner are putting data caps on people internet.  Which make it really hard for digital download.  Net Neutrality is already been invaded by greedy companies,  this is going to be a huge problem in the future for digital downloading.

Your 360 will be in your attic in a year? I still have my N64 connected to my TV and will continue to do so for as long as it runs. I prefer physical copies but if digital is the only way I can go then I'll buy it and continue to play it years after the console has become obsolete.

It is quite interesting, when someone buys or pays someone for something digital its there in the air. Wish they could guarantee game downloads.

In an ideal world digital should clearly be the winner. You don't have to change the disk and can have lots and lots of titles on the console. Particularly when it comes to portable things like phones or 3DS as you don't really want to carry any content around with you. The main issues that arise around this are DRM.

I have the issue at the moment where my xbox has run out of hard drive space so I have to delete some of my older games, but there is no option to back them up really. What happens when they stop the xbox 360 live service? Clearly I then won't be able to download them again so will they just be lost forever!? It's not clear on if this is on the horizon or not.

Clearly if Steam ever went out of business there would be a big question around what would happen to all that content. Offline mode should work although I have found it problematic in the past.

Digital game should be cheaper though since you can't sell them on and they are cheaper to distribute.

Whenever I hear: "Are you ready" and this stupid ad begins to play, I feel so stupid that I visited once again GameSpot.

paying as you go with console games is a good idea if you like a smorgasbord of titles and have a good internet connection and don't mind slow downs.

BUT! if you're really into just ONE title, your actually going to pay MORE as your monthly subscriptions pass the amount of £40 worth of the said title (unless its one of those WOW games)
Doesn't it make sense to own it and for it to be stored locally on your machine then on some kind of server.

I seriously don't get why people buy digital games. You lose the right to sell, loan, and basically keep the game forever. When the server goes down you will lose that game. Why buy something that you enjoy and will eventually lose? Makes sense for some companies but it only hurts us.

Only safe thing to do is buy hard copies of your PC games in case Steam goes under!

I think considering what is going on with Games for Windows Live with people going to be losing games they bought people might want to think twice about buying digital games.

Capcom if you don't do right by people with your games on that service I will not be buying your games in the future.

Banyek

I have a nice idea for those, who already bought the game, and cant access it anymore... its called RGH for the xbox 360.. you download the arcade or whatever title from a torrent site, and than just play with it... its that easy.... people who doesnt even buy the game use this method on a daily basis....... dont let yourself get f*cked by a game retailer twice or more, DO SOMETHING about it!

GabrielOnuris

In my opinion, this is one of the most important points of why I prefer my games on my PC rather than consoles... I like to get back to older games sometimes, feel the nostalgia, give it another go, finish it to see another ending or simply to play again (maybe even with mods).

Sony and Microsoft should make their consoles to transfer digital games from their old consoles to new ones.

OK let's just pretend for a minute that the internet infrastructure is actually able to handle streaming of games.

I think it would actually be a good service. There are plenty of console games that I have rented because they can be finished in a matter of days. In the last year I rented both TLOU & Beyond: two Souls, 2 great games that I easily finished with a 3 day hire. However I won't be able to get the dlc for TLOU because I didn't buy it (& I won't at the prices they charge in NZ). If I could play games & their dlc with a streaming service at a reasonable price, that would be a pretty good value proposition.

My PC handles most of my gaming needs these days, but there are still a few console exclusives that I wouldn't mind playing (again) if I thought I was getting value for my money.

I will buy physical copies if I really enjoyed the game or it's a collectors edition. Or it's a game I am really looking forward to, other than that, I will keep collecting games on my steam account.

BlackBaldwin

I don't buy digital unless its super cheap and its really something I want like the pc verisons of FF7, FF8 the console counter-parts look like crap on my ps3 and vita only the remastered verisons later released look palletable enough for me to get into enough to play them all the way though.  So I guess if this service would improve old games maybe I might get into it but since it wont then I don't see the point in it since I prefer physcial media and always will.

ShadowsDemon

I'll always want physical copies of my games. Always.

One problem with streaming games is that games can easily be removed from the library if there are licensing issues or a company goes defunct.  For downloads, at least on PC, you will keep your copy even if the distributor loses the right to sell the game.  Take Fallout for example, you can't buy a digital copy anywhere to my knowledge due to some licensing issue.  But if you bought a copy on Gog or Steam you can still play it.

I think the Playstation Now service has a lot of potential, if the price and the library of games are right. There are TONS of old games that I never got a chance to play that I would love the opportunity to go back and try. So what if I don't actually own the games? If the service delivers the right bang for my buck then it's totally worth it. I think of it like my subscriptions to Netflix and Hulu Plus - access to more entertainment than I could possibly use at a price I can live with. (Assuming it's priced suitably.)

15 bucks is the most I spend on digital games. If you wanna play old games then go buy the old systems. Awhile back I wanted to play RE Zero,RE1 and MGS remake and the old james bond games. I bought a Gamecube, 7 games, memory card, wired and wireless controller for around 110 bucks. Got my old dreamcast and gotta get couple more games for it and still got my xbox.

What I am saying is it doesn't cost much to go back and get the original copies of the games instead of buying the digital copy. If I wanna play my old ps2 games then I will get another ps2. If I wanna play my ps3 games then I will keep playing my ps3

Now if this Playstation Now service comes out and cost like 9.99 a month then I will check it out. Plus I wanna know how often new games will be coming out. Ps3 owners still dont have the full ps1 library and not even 25% of ps2 library....

Coco_pierrot
Coco_pierrot

I only buy digital if it is less than 15$ otherwise I want a CD with a case. Why less than 15$ ? because it is close to the price to go to the cinema with the bonus of keeping the game for much longer.

I don't know. I kind of like the idea of buying a licence or at least renting a licence that can be played from now to a long time into the future, but it is the subscription that puts me off Sony's Playstation Now feature.

I mean I don't honestly think I'd ever want to subscribe to it. I didn't own a PS3 but even if Microsoft brought out a version I doubt I'd want a perpetual subscription with my perpetual back catalogue Xbox games either.

I'd love to buy PS1 games again, Xbox Originals, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, but if I have to maintain a subscription the entire time it will add up pretty fast. And for games I might play once a year, if that, as a passing nostalgia trip what is the point?

Sony will have to host these games on their servers the entire time anyway, so the cost to them is going to be the same, and it isn't like I will be the only one buying older games again. Sony will make a crap tonne of money but with subscriptions their chance of getting my money at all has dropped close to zero.

@inspectercoley I agree in a lot of ways, although I'll add that I generally prefer to own a physical copy of a game, and will only buy digital if there seems to be no chance of ever getting an actual copy. But the same reasons are still there. Most indie games seem to be appropriately priced, the pictured Super Meat Boy for example, but then you get to games like Diablo 3 that's still like 60 bucks digital. You could argue that the physical copy of the game only costs them a small price to make so largely what you're paying for is the actual code, the thing that took the longest to make, but most people don't see it that way. I see it more of a 50/50 split. To me, half the fun of owning a game is having something physical that I can put on the shelf next to the other wonderful games I own. Something that I can lend to my friends when I feel like it. A couple dollar discount won't replace that. =(

@Martyr77  I like keeping my games, makes it a much better investment over trading it in for a fraction of what you bought it for

Banyek

btw... buying a console nowadays is the same if you think about it... you dont buy a constant game console that you can use forever, you buy 3 -4 years of console usage... the warranty is lost after 3 years, and we all know how unstable the fat 360 was... even the slim ones are done after 2 years, since the inner processor temperature is on constant 82Celsius, and it just dies after a while. usualy after the warranty time...   I know this, becouse Im having my 4th 360... The ps3 was not that well built either, hundreds of people are selling their broken console on hungarian sites.. ( Im hungarian .. :( )  Remember the FAT ps2? they didnt broke that easily, but the optical reader got shitty after a while and it was unable to read the games...
what im trying to say is, either way, you will not have your games and consoles forever, at one point you have to let them go..
Or use emulators on a pc for your old console games, like pcsx2.. That solves some of the problem..

@fersay777 @ESPM400  I am constantly amazed by the idiocy of the GS anti-PC crowd.  If I got my info from them I'd think the PC was a $5000 platform that literally could not operate except in my mother's basement and struggled to play PS2 games that didn't come out for it anyway.

Seriously, nearly every game that comes out for PS4 and Xbox 1 also comes for PC.  Not only that, but it gets more exclusives every year than the PS4, Xbox 1 and Wii U combined.  That and it has decades of classic games that are still worth playing (Balder's Gate, Half-Life, Deus Ex and KOTOR spring to mind).

Try knowing something about something before you speak next time.

@PaperthinTV I hear ya man I haven't really played an hd verison that has done the original s justice but hey playing a game the first time is special so there is pros and cons anyway you look at old games compared to now.

BlackBaldwin
BlackBaldwin

@naruto945 control-wise yes, to change the controls would be considered a sacrilege against the original gems in my eyes. But eye candy wise its fine so in my personal opinion a proper remake even though it wasn't hd back then would be the remastered version of resident evil on the game cube that is the only game I know in the existence that can be considered a masterpiece over its original its to bad none of company has done something like that undertaking really. Calcium really needs to bring that to the x-1 and ps4 with hd visuals they would sell millions of that game.

@BlackBaldwin arent all the hd remakes the same game? Played the ZOE 1&2 HD remake, KH 1.5, RE 4 HD, shadow of colossus, and ico they all played just like i remembered em
