This game is an absolute masterpiece, not only is it practically flawless, but it also has so much to do and so much to experience, with quirky characters, brilliantly evil enemies and astonishing secrets. All set in an inspiring world of discovery, battle and adventure.
@williebazerka nope, but some of the features in this game require a rumble pak, an add-on to a controller that makes it rumble. It's not a requirement, but It makes the game easier.
@jayjay444 Majora's Mask topped it in certain aspects. Skyward Sword could possibly top it entirely. But I don't like comparing Zelda games too much. Each one has its own perfections but OOT was perfect in almost every aspect.
The only game on the planet that truely deserves a perfect 10 this game cant be beatin and it wont evder be beating
@adamomars I'm going to order it today. My pc's broke so I can't play Skyrim when it comes out but everyone says this game is unbelievable and I've been dying to play this.Do I need a expansion pack for the N64 to play this?
@williebazerka ya this game is by far the best game to have existed. it'll by my favourite until i die. I still rate games based off of it. and no RPG, even though they are without a doubt superior, has bested it. Its the Classic.
Someone just gave me a N64 and I never played this game.I want to order it on Amazon.com and play it.I heard it's really good.
@DarkBuhamut Jeff Gerstmann. Believe me when I say you've missed the best days of Gamespot. The golden days. Back when Jeff Gerstmann, Greg Kasavin, Alex Navarro, Brad Shoemaker, Ryan Davis and allot of others were still around on the site. Believe my word for it; they were the best reviewing team there ever was. But then Gerstmann got fired for giving a game (Kane & Lynch) a fair score while Gamespot was running an add for the game. They recieved a complaint from the publisher, probably with threat for a lawsuit and so they fired Gerstmann for it. After which all hell broke loose. Gamers got wind of what happened, despite it being tried to cover up. You can actually check out the aftermath and go to the first Kane & Lynch game player reviews. Countless of reviews giving the game a 1.0 abysmal score for firing Gerstmann for doing his job. Also, every single important reviewer/editor left Gamespot after they heard Gerstmann was fired over this. Alex, Brad, Ryan... they all quit. Almost all of them at the same time. All they said was it was the right time to go. They were probably threatened not to publically tell what happened or else they'd face a lawsuit. But all of them leaving at the same time was evidence enough.
DarkBuhamut : The guy in the video that reviewed the game is Jeff Gerstmann, who is the same guy that did the review of the original Ocarina of Time when it came out in 1998 for the N64. He was one of the better game reviewers that Gamespot has had, and the internet for that matter.
I love this game, I even collected all 100 gold skulltulas!! If you know what I'm talking about then you know how tough that is, and if you don't then you should really try it for yourself. Anyway, I'm glad to see the re-make for the 3DS coming. I'd also like to see Majora's Mask come to 3DS too. I never did finish that one and don't have a Wii. I'm seriously thinking of getting a 3DS though, once the price drops just a bit!
This video looks about 10 years old, but more importantly, who is this guy doing the review? lol ive been following GS about 3 years now n I don't remember seeing him.
This game is probably my favourite of all time.. back in 1998 i played the living hell out of this game, i savored every moment of it and by the time i had felt like i had spent enough time just immersing myself in it and actually decided to beat it.. two years had gone by lmao. I was really young when i first got my hands on this masterpiece and maybe that's why it's had such a profound impact on me to this day.. Not a single game has captivated me like OoT has, And i'm not sure if there ever will be.. But here's hoping Skyward Sword is phenomenal! OoT may be the best game i've played in my life.. But the Zelda series as a whole is my absolute favourite.
To get a 10 at release and then to be re released so many years later and get an 8.9. Thats a top quality game.
@TheLastBlade He meant you cant push the home button, stop playing, and then immediately hop back in, like in other VC games.
The game is amazing. 8.9 is a good score. The only thing that confused me was automatically saving in the game....... Other than that, I can understand the other flaws.
Considering I've never played this before now, and it's still fantastic, This has to be one of the best games of all time.
@kickballer: I think you're confusing games, I'm talking about OoT, not TP. TP got an 8.8 on the Wii, while OoT got a 10 when released, and an 8.9 now.
short, sweet and to the point. This was one of my favorite games of all times. It's an adventure you don't want to miss.
almossb summed things up nicely. If a game isn't as good as it was back then (which is a matter of opinion), then they shouldn't give it a 10 simply because it got a ten all those years ago. That makes absolutely no sense at all. Games are reviewed comparing them to the games of today, there's no excuse for giving a game the nice treatment just because they were revolutionary back in the day. That being said, I still think this is a fantastic game, well deserving of the 8.9 score.
Hey cmon , this game is a 10/10 game , well some ppl here said that it was a 10/10 back in the day , but cmon, its like saing ... Gone with the Wind, they make a blue ray ver, it is a 10/10 , that was a realy great movie back in the day and it always be that way, no how long time pass , ppl will talk abouth Gone with the Wind of a realy great movie , and soo we must whit this game , the best i touch in my life, and , at least for me , no matter if im plaing it in a nintendo wii 2 or HD, it will always by a 11/10 game.
Why is everyone so mad at the rating? back then, it deserved a 10 because it was a revolution, everything was perfect in the game cause there was nothing better than it at the time. now, the game is old and everything in it is dated, but i still love this game like i did in 1998. i do think the game deserves 9 or a little more but not a 10 cause their are better games than it today. plus there are 3 zeldas that came after it that improve it and they didnt score a 10 so why should this game get a 10? P.S Jeff Gertsman (the guy in this review) was the guy who rated and gave OoT a 10 back in 1998.
I can't believe people are saying the Ocarina Of Time port to the Virtual Console should have got a 10. No it shouldn't. Look I regard Ocarina Of Time as the best game ever made. It was the first game I played worthy of a 10 score, and it's only amongst one of five games I've given 10 scores too, and it's the best game of them five... and I've played thousands of games. But any port of Ocarina Of Time shouldn't get a 10, simple as. The reason the game got a 10 back in 1998 was because of how revolutionary and visually brilliant it was. Yeah it still holds up well to this day, and yeah it's still the best Zelda game, but it's no longer the best looking game anymore. And yeah although it was a technical triumph in 1998 it's no longer viewed as that now. Get over the score. Yeah the N64 version is an absolute perfect 10, but none of it's ports are.
I think 8.9 is suitable, for met at least. I don't think OoT has aged as well as some of the other N64 games. The interface is clunky and the presentation, though beautiful, is also very dated. Some of the level design also frustrated me to no end. It's no surprise that so many years later, it would get a different score. Perspectives and expectations change, and so does technology. People, you have your own opinions, so keep them to yourselves. It's pointless to try and prove that this is a 10 game, since that is impossible for any game. It comes off as a bit fanboyish.
@nitzan_z Not up to today's standards? Dude....the game came out in the late 1990s..this is the same game just ported onto the wii...
lol you shouldn't pay so much attention to review scores, its obvious they went 8.9 instead of 9.0 just to avoid adding it to the editors choice list for 2007, and it has a lower score than the same game released in 1998 BECAUSE ITS 2007! its not a technological marvel anymore...
wow this is such a fail. why would you give the game a 10, then when the EXACT same game is released on the wii virtual console you give it an 8.9? plus, what a random score, 8.9? at the very very least make it 9.0
Graphics not up to today's standards?!? You just compared the space shuttle to the Wright Brother's plane...idiots. In my opinion, some things get better with time. The fact is, this game is still considered the greatest game of all time...and that fact alone earns it a 10. The fail of this review is enough to blot out the sun.
It's absolutely insane when reviewers compare older games to the standards today. Whenever I play a game, I look at it in context, or in other words, based on the time it was released. A quote from the heading of Jeff's original review- "can't be called anything other than flawless." A game can become flawed over time?
wow, extremely short video reivew by Jeff, but hey, what more could he say than what he did in his original 1998 review of the game. first 10 ever.
