I don't think I completely agree with the comment that Joel was hopeless and depressed after his daughter's death. Joel was free from the financial burdens of keeping up a household. From the dialogues and his relationship with Tess I think Joel was actually enjoying his new smuggler life style twenty years later. Ellie reminded him of his loss at a time when he was constructing a new one.
Joel might have been flattered with Tess calling him "Texas". A new gun-slinging tough guy going out on "dates" with Tess the new tough girlfriend. Whereas Ellie, she represented a world of soft emotions, caring, responsibilities, hard work etc...
@Valianteous Do you ever see Joel really smile after the prologue? does he ever truly laugh or make a comment about living life?
I don't think he "liked" anything at all after his daughter died, he was a man that just went on living, nomatter what, nomatter how. For him it was and still is, all about surviving however you can.
You can see that Joel is broken, after his daughter dies he doesn't ever speak of her or of his previous life nor any personal matters, he keeps his cards close so that he would NEVER hold someone close again like he did his daughter.
But the urge to do so is impossible, it's a human emotion and he slowly gives in towards the end, feeling an immense need to save Ellie, both from the bandits but also from the fireflies, he wouldn't want anyone to hurt her, cause he loves her too much in the end.
There are too many indications leading to the fact, that Joel was broken after the prologue.
I am not saying he directly misses it or thinks about it alot, But to directly say that he "likes" being where he is, that he has killed innocent people for food, that him and Tess have smuggled things for their own benefit which might lead more poor people to rot as they get hold of ration cards etc. There is no indication that he likes it, however it rather seems he just deals with it, because it is what he has to do to survive.
@Warful @Valianteous The game does not say much about how broken Joel is because it was not directly told by the game. I suppose you can assume Joel was really hurt from how his interactions with Ellie. But I don't think there were any direct dialogues of Joel being sad about his loss.
After the emotional prologue ending. The cow-boyish dialogue and gameplay with Tess was a freshener.
That is exactly why I love this game and The Sopranos, it isn't something that gets thrown at you, it isn't fed to you on a silverplate.
It's all about being human, being illogical and being irrational. If you could just live into Joel's life, into his situation and into his actions you would see it.
Also if you literally think he "likes" being without Sarah and without his quiet home and his work, I think you got him, and most humans wrong.
I'd wrather have a mortgage than having to scrounge for supplies every single day of my life, living day by day instead of month by month with a chance of being eaten alive, raped, murdered or worse.
If you read in between the lines of Joel, you would see that through the game he NEVER talks about his personal life, he never talks about his past, it's as if his past just doesn't exist anymore, not in the way that he's happy about it being gone, but I think it's too damn hard to walk around every day thinking about the fact that you once had everything and you lost it.
This game is a diamond in the rough in a way, you have to piece together those little hidden fragments to truly see the humanity behind the characters, to see beyond what they DIDN'T say and what they didn't do.
I am happy to see that no one else shares Tom's views at GS. I think his close minded views and distaste for violence should preclude him from reviewing games like The Last of Us. He is probably better equipped to review Nintendo games and non mature titles. I also think he thrives on being a contrarian. He probably prides himself on bucking the consensus. People like that are seeking attention and ultimately cannot propose constructive or sensible arguments. His analysis appeared weak and contrived out of a necessity to be different. It is funny how the other two guys were able to follow Joel's almost cliche

People like that are seeking attention and ultimately cannot propose constructive or sensible arguments. His over-analysis appeared weak and contrived out of a necessity to be different. It is funny how the other two guys were able to follow Joel's simple and almost cliche character progression and Tom just couldn't or refused. Again I think this guy is the ultimate troll who needs controversy to feel relevant. The problem with that is he doesn't constructively add to the discourse which is why we are on this game site.
@55584623 a wrong and stupid opinion cannot constitute to a opinion. so the world has to mend that stupidity. Racist, sexist, homophobic opinions stem from ignorance and a lack of social understanding, and this makes them incorrect. Since Tom's opinions are only wrong as they are formed on information that is incorrect deduced from his lack of emotional depth and intelligence, the world cannot accept it =O
@55584623 I totally agree, there are NO direct indications of Joel being shady and that Tom just writes it into Joel's life that way, just so he can justify hating him, thus hating the game in the end, is just rediculous.
It just feels as if he came up with arguments, not only to support his 8.0/10, but also to justify his bombardment of nitpickings of the game.
@orbis_mortis yeah IGN's was actually an entertaining discussion of the game! They had different opinions but no one felt close minded enough to completely disregard the other.
This dude Tom is making it so hard for me to enjoy this video. He came up with some bogus theory of Joel as person from the first minute of the game and has refused to concede that a character can have growth throughout the whole game! To this guy every progression for Joels character was just non existent! This game was a masterpiece! I actually felt that I traveled across the country and survived. I loved the changing of the seasons. Though it only took ours to play, I felt as though I experience a full year. I genuinely felt as though I was on a Journey (another amazing ps3 exclusive). And this Joe Pantoliano looking douchebag just seems oblivious to it all!!!!!!!!
@toakr Same feelings here. Which further proves that 1 person (Tom) should not review/ score the game. It should be several (2-4) people so that 1 persons preconceived notions about a character (Joel) seep into the final score of the game. (8.0)
The first thing Tom says is "I don't like Joel". Tom is 1.5 base points behind the metacritic. Everyone has an opinion, no matter how wrong it may be,
The ending was what was needed to preserve humanity. Only a coward would allow them to kill a little girl for a "supposed" cure. The cure was not a guarantee as the recordings you find in the game have shown. When mankind starts making excuses to kill other human beings you have the genocides, the experimentation on mankind, the cannibalism (shown in the game) and the murder for supplies without a conscience. What Joel did was not selfish, it was right and it was pure heartfelt and genuine humanity at it's core. Ellie brought Joel back to humanity and brought hope back into his life. That was her cure for mankind. Joel was the perfect hero and Ellie was the perfect cure for the plague that haunted the humanity in Joel.
I think Joel was selfish because thinking of the greater good would definitely cause him to try and save as many people as possible. I see the main point of the game that we humans are not much superior to animals like we like to think. In the end, we are mostly worried about ourselves and our young
The ending to this game was perfect. Joel tried so hard after Tess not to be attached to anyone (I feel he was since he went across the country on her dying word). He tried so hard to not feel for Ellie (scene in the cabin with tommy) to the extent where wanted Ellie to stop caring for him. By taking her the rest of the way instead of tommy he had accepted the fact that he would stop at nothing to not lose that connection. That is why he killed everyone to get her back in the lab. He would not bear to lose the attachment that he tried so hard not to have. If he didn't lie to her in the very end, it would be the craziest break in character ever. That ending would be terrible.
My only hope is at they leave it here. Do not make a dlc that tells what happens after or make a sequel with these characters. Leave it to the imagination!
Tom, since you're so keen on passing judgement, I've got a couple of morality questions for you:
1. Assuming you have a child, I want to kill your child because I think I'll be able to use that to find a cure for cancer. Would you let me?
2. Now, I don't want to cure cancer, I just need to kill your one child in order to save a schoolbus full of other children. Would you let me?
3. Now, I don't even want to save a schoolbus, I just want to save 5 other children. One is dying and needs a heart, the other needs a kidney, the other a liver.. would you let me?
Tom, I think you let your personal morality interfere with your scoring. You're not supposed to judge the characters and see if you agree with their decisions. The characters are not there to please you or make you feel good about humanity. The mere fact that the game got you so involved, to the point it was hard for you to save Ellie means this game was very successful in immersing you in. Even if you disagree with it, you can still give it credit.
is tom emo? bcause I nvr figured how anybody could think joel is like that. seriously? PS Tom should get fired and not b a game reviewer but instead go kiss Fox news' ass.
Shaun, I was pleasantly surprised with your insights. I think you nailed it on Joel's motivation. In order to survive you have to latch onto some goal. Very well put sir
Tom you are not capable of reviewing games like this. The podcast has proven to us all that you are very limited in your ability to read cut-scenes and characters motives. I am genuinely worried that you are allowed to review such well designed game.
The simple fact that they are reviewing this game in the way that people discuss movies tells you a lot. The characters are much more organic and real than the usual cardboard cut out types we get in most games.
A fantastic game, one of the best of the year and, although not perfect, it probably DID deserve a higher review score than the one given.
woah i just realized how much i dont like this Tom guy........not because he gave the game a 8.0 thats cool its his opinion. I find him so full of himself, like his opinion of things is better than everyone elses because hes a videogame reviewer. It love to see how long that Tom guy would last in the Last of Us universe.
@ronid76 I think Tom has never experienced hardship or sorrow in real life.. easy to criticize what other people do in order to survive.. I want to see how he handles himself when he needs to kill someone or be killed. He's like a housebroken cat, if you throw him back into the wild, he's going to last 10 seconds
@ronid76 I agree. He acts really stuck up and, like you say, full of himself. But what I find strange is the caption next to his name says '...you can just call him the jerk who hates all the things you love and loves all the things you hate'. How can someone like that be trusted to give a proper review?
Replaying the game now and even watching the cutscenes again. Amazing game. GS why is it so wrong to do a re-review? Make things right, this game deserves higher than an 8 and get rid of Tom already.
Until they do this I won't ever take GS's review serious frankly. I'm just going to use it to get info on upcoming games but scour the net for the final evaluation because just letting Tom's review stand says they haven't the balls to turn round and tell Tom he is wrong, haven't got the balls to do the right thing.
Don't forget that Feedbacula thrives on mostly inane comments riddled with grammatical errors. You wouldn't see them feature well phrased and rational arguments free of personal attacks and ad homs.
Another thing is the feedbackula. GS trying their hardest on that feedbackula to mock people who was against Tom's review, people with valid comments and then release this podcast of two of the GS team clearly not agree with most what Tom is saying. Maybe GS should do a feedbackula mocking the other guys sat with Tom as well then...
@EL_Bomberdor @talkcasual Many people say #dealwithit and accept Tom's review.. and I thought so too, but if MS pulled a 180, I see no reason why GS can't :)
What boggles my mind is that Tom keeps bashing a lot of games for being "power fantasies," then when a game tries to portrait a broken man in an apocalyptic setting in a realistic way, he hates the character? WTF.
joel seems to be just challenging himself , there's nothing left to lose or gain just the sake of going into the unknown must be enough for the lad ... as for human beings ? that is not even in a question ... lost lost lost ...
@NIGHTWOLF1210 I suppose that is true- of course, if I was put in that position to either save this one person I care about or sacrifice them to save the many...I'd hate to be put in that position.
Joel says at once point 'sacrifice the few to save the many'...but still. :/
