The HotSpot - Mind the Generation Gap - 1/11/12
Speculation about the next generation of consoles is heating up, but what do gamers actually want from it? And will Sony and Microsoft even show up for the fight?
11:24 good point. I think Sony's PSN and Microsoft's XBLA would be good as downloadable gaming services for PC and Mac. But the hardware route would have to exhaust all of its resources. I think that's what's gonna happen near the end of the 8th gen.
14:56 How is it so interesting/hard to understand that gamers WANT backward compatibility? Maybe these guys don't get it because they're industry heads. As industry heads, it's their job to push "new" s___. So promoting "old" s___ isn't in their bribed out best interest. I'm all for backward compatibility. The lack of it on consoles is part of what drove me to PC gaming. At least on PCs you can download FREE patches that allow the latest OSes to read your Old School favs. Consoles often don't feature backward compatibility in an effort to force you to either buy the newer (more expensive) software or RE-purchase your old favs in a new format. It's a jip and it's driven me away from the console scene.
I dont get why they cannot understand why cutomers want backwards compatability?? Ive spent hundreds of pounds on games that would wither away collecting dust if they could not be replayed on a new console. Any one else agree?
Nice to see Brendan hosting the show again. Reminds me of the time I used to listened to it while backpacking in Australia.
i really had trouble deciding if carolyn was a man or a girl, originally i thought it was a man with a girls name but i am not suree
@WCK619 I don't know if that is the case for you but when I had a PS3 that had backwards compatibility I played my old games all the time. Personally I used to have roughly 50 PS2 games and I loved playing them. My problem is I have a HD tv now and the PS2 looks like garbage on it. The PS3 made the picture clear. I'm not against the idea of downloading them through the market that Sony has. It's just they don't have PS2 games. They have PS1 games but I don't want to play those ones.
Anyone else thinking Tom Mc Shea looks a bit like Tim Robbins (aka Shawshank)? Got the idea stuck in my head everytime I see him now :S
I like how most of the podcast there is a bottle of water on the desk right across the screen from a "no food or drink" sign.
@Madgnad but as was mentioned, when you get a new console how often do you actually go back and play your old games for the last console? Not very often. Not often enough to make it an important feature.
Guys the backwards compatibility is important because the newer systems upscale the images to our HD tv's so the image isn't as blurry. Also the fact that we don't have to have 2 systems plugged in just to play the games we want to.
