The Gist - 5 Of The Best Sidekicks Ever
Jess gives you the rundown on five of her all time favourite sidekicks. Did your favourite companion make the list?
by Jess McDonell on
I never found Navi to be annoying. Her screams of "Watch out!" or whatever didn't bother me and her companionship made the journey feel less lonely than it would've been if Link was on his own. Which is why I also appreciate Midna (probably more so) and Fi (who's kinda boring).
Tali is also a great choice. I like how her personality developed throughout the series, from a slightly naive girl that didn't know much about the universe into a total badass, quickwitted enough to execute every one of my slightly Renegade-leaning Shepard's orders even in tense situations.
Weighted Companion Cube is just stupid, though. It's a one-off joke that the internet has beaten to death as it's wont to do. Quite frequently in the case of Portal, sadly. The cake is a lie and all that...
My personal Top 5 would probably look something like this (in no particular order):
1. Midna (LoZ: Twilight Princess) - A more sassy, mysterious Navi who's also useful in combat.
2. Trip (Enslaved) - Not even sure this counts as sidekick, she's pretty important to the overall story. But she's also a fleshed out, believable character who grew on me over the course of the game even though I didn't like her much at the start of the game.
4. Potato GLaDOS (Portal 2) - Now here's a good sidekick from that series. You find out so much about her while she's traveling with you and her background plus the way her personality changes makes the end of the game feel more tragic than it would've otherwise.
5. Morte (Planescape: Torment) - This guy. Coming off as a jerk with a big mouth who constantly tries to get with the ladies (even though he's a floating skull) you start off liking him because of his silly banter and equally silly answers you can sometimes give him (like wether the shambling zombie lady was eyeing him or you) but as the game progresses you find out more about his history, the lies he told you and why he's even following you at all.
Rest of the Planescape: Torment cast - Seriously, if you can tolerate/like 90s isometric RPGs like Baldur's Gate or Fallout 1&2 you should GO PLAY THIS GAME!
Ellie (The Last of Us) - Too integral to the entire game to be even called a sidekick.
3. Floyd (from Planetfall, an old Infocom game)
5. Morte (from Planescape: Torment)
So three from Bioware, one from a game using Bioware's engine, and Floyd. Poor Floyd. I really didn't want to do it, Floyd, you have to believe me! I tried everything but there was only one way to finish the game!! SAY YOU BELIEVE ME, FLOYD!!! PLEASE!!!!
Ummm... I think I'm going to go lie down for a bit...
Yeah go sidekicks. Haha well I initially thought of Tails and then went no, nope no way. So for me I'd say Cortana from Halo, Alyx from Half Life, Tiny Tina from Borderlands, the Mentat with the really big eyebrows, http://youtu.be/jPNfgXBlzm0,from Emperor: Battle for Dune haha & Toad from Mario games.
I think Cortana from Halo 4 was a great side kick/companion. Halo 4 would have just been a so-so shooter game without her. Cotana made the game special. Cortana makes for a great girlfriend and companion. Who wouldn't want Cortana for a sidekick? (and it's not because she' virually naked either)
In Gears of War: Judgement: Sofia (or Sophia), voiced by Ali Hillis, was a great companion. She came to my rescue many times during the campaign.
Tali is good, but I liked Dr. T'sonie in the Mass Effect series. I liked Miranda as my favourite side kick in Mass Effect 2. I took her on every mission. She was voiced by Yvonne Strohovski, an Australian just like Jess. Her Australian accent and personality made her very special.
Katie Justice in Dirt 2. She drives shotgun in some of those Rally races and she's on the same race team and competitor in other races.
Great job Jess. I love your shows. You're the best.
Despite its name companion cube is not even a companion, its an inanimate object, it shouldn't even be mentioned.
Oh Tali! She's fantastic. And good call on Navi as well--obnoxious as she could be, she was ultimately pretty helpful. Fun video, thanks!
Great list! My favorite? Tough, but I might have to go with Agro from Shadow of the Colossus, with an honorable mention to whomever you get paired with in Journey. :D
All of your favorite sidekicks are deserving of a top list, except I would never think of the Portal cube as one :D My all-time favorite sidekick is one and only... Morte from Planescape: Torment. Love his banter :)
(other notable skull sidekicks: Murray from Monkey Island, Bill from Driftmoon)
For the Mass Effect sidekick, I would nominate Zaeed and Wrex, even though their times in the series as party members was short lived, but perhaps that limitation is enough to get them disqualified as "sidekicks". Those guys were great.
HK-47 FTW! Fully agreed!
And yoshi? Is he/she/it/them a sidekick or more of an item?
And Cortana from Halo. Cortana was a sidekick if I ever knew one. That scene in Halo 3 when you rescue her is among my all time favorite moments in gaming.
Tali is a good pick from ME, though I'm all about Wrex. Then there's CL4P-TP from Borderlands, who was to comedy what the Reapers were to urban planning. Arbiter from Halos 2-3 is another fave. Then there's Elizabeth, your guide through the soul-shattering mindrape that is Bioshock Infinite. Round it out with Aku Aku of Crash Bandicoot.
Dunno, I always liked Legion the most in Mass Effect, with his weird yet wise remarks about humanity. As for my favorite sidekick of all time, i guess I would go with Alyx Vance. She's smart, human and capable, and provides the perfect counterpoint to Gordon's silent approach.
Mordin has to be my pick. Tali was alright, but Mordin's overall character and ending scene in ME3 is by far the best side story I've witnessed.
As many have mentioned, Minsk and Boo (that's a sidekick with his own sidekick), and Murray from Monkey Island would be up there for me too. Not sure if they're sidekicks or party members, but Vivi and Rydia kick some ass too -- and Fran, although I think she's Balthier's sidekick, not the player's.
I am so very glad you included Crow from The Longest Journey! Definitely one of the most overlooked gaming companions.
1. Ellie, The Last of Us
2. Wheatley, Portal 2
3. F.L.U.D.D, Super Mario Sunshine
4. Navi, Ocarina of Time
5. Mr. Drippy, Ni No Kuni
I'd have to say Wheatley gets in there somewhere... he was most definitely a very complex sidekick, and he was flat out hilarious, even though *SPOILER ALERT* he tried to kill you the entire second half of the game.
Yeah, totally agree with Tali. I romanced with Liara in the first game, but I was drawn to Tali after her personal mission in the second game and stayed with her in the third.
Tali was terrible. She died ALL THE TIME. I dont know if the AI was broken but she never listened to my commands and would run in the middle of fights.
Weirdo named OSCAR (an automaton) from SYBERIA is the first one that comes to my mind. A robot that binds with its master KATE WALKER is an awfully charming companion. As a matter of fact, I think I'm gonna play Syberia right now ...
This list is missing Minsc and Boo (Baldurs Gate 2) & Morte the floating skull (Planescape: Torment)
I hesitate to call her a sidekick, but if you somehow made it through Last of Us without Ellie saving your ass, or otherwise doing something awesome and completely unexpected, well... you're weird, I guess.
Great summary! Fully agree on Tali and companion cube, my favorite too :)
On the companion cube, while I was watching, I told my self, Jess, please include the burned out companion cube with the slamming door at the end of Portal 2... You did include it, props for that!
Good suggestions overall. However your list is clearly lacking space hamster representation. Poor Minsc & Boo have been neglected.
@amdreallyfast Wrex for sure, I'm now doing a ME3 playthrough with Wrev because every other time I'd go with Wrex. It was really hard to put that guy down in ME2 but I wanted to see the result.
@GameSharpLad I only played one game in the series (I think it was 3), but yeah, Daxter is great.
@Komissar33188 Oh wow, how did I forget Claptrap! I went with Tiny Tina, Claptrap for Borderlands 1 and Tiny Tina for Borderlands 2 for sure. I drew Claptrap at work a while ago-then tweaked it for Christmas: https://scontent-b-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc3/483565_10100850503301518_2082177710_n.jpg
Legion!! He was definitely the best in the whole Mass Effect universe. I loved the whole AI developing consciousness idea and was so very sorry when I lost him at the end of Mass Effect 2, making me kill him again in Mass Effect 3. Losing that only robot had greater impact on my story perception than all the brothers, sisters and moms I lost in Dragon Age 2.
@StammBladecastrI came to the comments looking for Minsk and Boo :).
@cul8r000 Was gonna say Drippy and Wheatley for sure. Great comic relief.
@daikkenaurora12 Well you can say that about any AI character, what level of difficulty were you doing?
