i love star wars. and this mmo is gunna make me love it even more. wow isnt visualy stunning but people still like it. this game is gunna be great. period.
@Anti-Skub My goodness, and it seems that if a games tries to defend his favorite company from criticism, it's immediately met with unfair and uncalled accusations that I'm a "childish person with a simple mind." No, I am nit a raging cod fanboy that screams COD every single post I make on the Internet. No, I am not a console fanboy that supports the console while not being able to give a good reason. It's just that in the last decade, I've played the old bioware classics like Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, etc. These games have shown me that gameplay prioritized over graphics. I know this is the 21st century, and we have gorgeous games so the standard is much higher. However, I believe the graphics take a second seat behind gameplay. My statement on "no one is forcing you to play" is one of the most widely used, but it also shuts up most trolls and fanboy critisism. This is obviously not the case with you. I completely get that a game has good and bad points. If I were as faboyish as you say, I would've gone to every bioware game screaming "THIS GAME ROOLZ!!!" without aknowledging the bad points at all. As you van clearly see, this is not the case. Tossing insults around the Internet is liable to start a flame war, if you do insult, please do so with actual proof, and not assumptions based off a single post you read. Apologies for my lack of knowledge on game development.
@goku33339 Why is it that gamers only seem to be able to grasp polar opinions? Any criticism no matter how slight is inevitably followed by someone posting something along the lines of "No one is forcing you to play it" or "Why don't you go back to COD?". Conversely any praise is met with screams of "fanboy" and accusations that they only like a particular platform. Can you not accept that it's possible for games to have both good and bad points? No matter how good the gameplay is, or how much more important that is than the graphics, can you not accept that the game should have looked better than this? As for "the graphics still might change"...no, they wont. I'm not about to write you a long explanation of why they wont but I guarantee you that the game will look, if not exactly like that, then as like that as makes no difference.
@Anti-Skub i know this really presumptous and without back up, but i have a feeling that bioware puts story and art design before actually polishing it up. just putting it out there, the graphics might still change
@Anti-Skub nobody is making you play the game - in my opinion, the graphics, animation, presentation doesn't make a game, gameplay does. Even if this featured animations where they look like clay aniimations, if the gameplay is good, im picking it up.
@ThunderGob65 As I explained to bud, the fact that it is an MMO doesn't mean it can look this dated and not expect criticisms for it and I don't mean dated compared to other games. I mean dated for an MMO. Taking into account all of the reasoning as to why MMOs will never be as pretty as single player games, TOR still looks well below par. Also, what's your reasoning behind the animation? Textures and polygons count fair enough, they eat up memory that the developers need to conserve, but explain why the animations are so stiff and unnatural?
@bud_de_arkor It's true that MMOs need to be more aware of players hardware than other games. It's harder to predict what's going to happen in an MMO and you can't have half your users machine grind to a halt when 100 people all decides to dance on one table in a town. They also need to account for the fact that in MMOs players expect to be able to equip items to a dozen different equipment slots and have all those items appear on their character, and not just be retextures of the thing they had before, and that can eat memory for breakfast. Because of that you'll tend to find that the nicer looking MMOs have a very limited choice in equipment looks and they are heavily instanced. Having said all that however, those justifications don't go far enough to excuse how bad TOR looks (only talking about graphics here not the gameplay). It really does look about 5 years old before it's even been released. Not a good sign for a game that needs to be future proofed if it wants to see anything like the lifespan of WoW.
@anthonyrun did you reallly read thunder comment? more praphic and players online with that top graphics needs a lot of video card and a lot of memory and a lot of internet speed combo. that means that you have to own a pc better than 90% of the ones on the markets to play a game that fills the expectations all want: top graphics, be able to handle many players on screen, and have all moving freely. AoC was able to be played ok becouse there was few people playing it (means few online so less for the pc to handle) so yeah is about graphics.
@ thunder - This looks old and the animations look horridly outdated. It's hardly just about the graphics. Technology and hardware has advanced and they really ought make a game that looks better than WoW; in fact many companies have, AoC for example... It is just a shame that was not much of a game.
I'm surprised at all the "bad graphics" comments...are you all ignorant? You do realize this will be a massively multiplayer online game right? To make that work, you can't have the same level of graphics as you would for a single player game (especially for PC games with so many different configurations possible). If the graphic requirements are too high, the game would be choppy and unplayable...kinda like Warhammer online.
well actually seeing how Yoda describes himself in star wars 6 a few hundred years old so it's not really impossible for him to be alive back then (old republic). I think it may be him... Would be cool, bring on Yoda in his primal days. But I don't know the timeline so don't press "!" for thousand times. Correction would be appreciated...
The game looks amazing, but the combat looks a bit too much like WoW. They should make a few tweaks and make it a little bit shifted to an action game.
i can't wait to play this game, however i expected better graphics.... i know they want to be accessible to the largest public possible, but we are in 2011 for goodness sake... time to move on...
First off, Yoda was not alive back then (for the people commenting that it doesn't sound like Yoda. Second how was the empire mentioned? Thousands of years before the Empire. lol
@mowmoocowcoo - oh yes, I remember when the first KOTOR came out and I played it to death. But if memory serves, you ran around with a group of companions and ofc it was single player. One of the prevalent aspects of MMOs is that everyone want balanced 1v1 combat. I just don't like the idea of a Trooper, Bounty Hunter being on a par with a Jedi or Sith, but we shall see. I still think the graphics and animations are worst than games that came out years ago :(
Just a further note though, the movement looks clunky. I don't like it. Especially the blade swings. Locked wrists make it look incredibly clunky and sub-par.
@Thathanka: Did you ever play the old KotoR games? While in those, jedi's were often superior to non-forced based classes, you could roll a force-free character and still hold your own, often excelling in specific areas in ways that a jedi never could. To me at least, the class setup of this game doesn't look like such a stretch. Also, yes, GW2 does look pretty fantastic.
I can't believe that people actually think this looks good! I think it looks awful and will be a huge failure. The whole idea is flawed anyway - they will have to balance classes ofc, but what's the point of a SW where troopers are as powerful as jedis. This game was a mistake - all my hope for 2011 now rests with GW2.
I think that it is very arrogant to think we can possibly know how a game will do once released. Way too many games have been hyped and failed miserably, and just as many have been crapped on before release and then out-shined the competition.
@kotorfan100 you do not speak for "everyone" and what they wanted. also, categorizing this game as just a "WoW competitor" shows your simplemindedness.
i know this game looks insanely good but i'm just really mad that bioware is not going to make a kotor 3. the kotor games were the reason i got into rpgs and i wanted them to continue the "revan exile" storyline that everybody else wanted, not a WoW competitor.
Great story for this game is a must and replay also the graphics cards of today shouldn't be forgotten!!!!! , otherwise this game will loose its value at least for me. Watching the trailer give me the feeling this is too cartoon-ish and for kids mainly.
@moncealyo I can see where you're coming from. Just have to wait for the releases now and see how the games go. There are a lot of games for mmo this year though.
@Praeceps86UK Sure a good game doesn't need great graphics but it sure helps. I liked the old kotor games. They were a lot of fun. I wished they would have just made a great single player game than this. I have to say that I'm not totally dismissing the game. However, I'm skeptical because the graphics and gameplay does not look that great and as far as other people disagreeing with me. Thats fine with me. This isn't a popularity contest. I still think they need to improve the graphics.
@moncealyo I can't see much difference in graphics between this, guild wars 2 and rift to be honest, as the other guy said though some of us arent interested in new games only because of the graphics and theres said to be a lot of content in the old republic. Theres more to it than high graphics in games, theres the gameplay aswell. Sometimes some high graphic games havent been done very well, focusing more on the eye candy rather than the gameplay quality to get people buying it. So don't put down old republic so soon. I think I might try Rift and Guild Wars 2 but I'm looking forward to old republic the most. Also a lot of people disagree on your opinion of the graphics, 11 out of 13 people have given you a thumbs down on your original post.
Man, I've been hanging for this game since it was announced, keeping an eye out for all videos & articles. But this is the first thing I've seen that has looked like absolute ass! Now I'm nervous about this being any good.
@Nodasi That remark I said, "Aw come on, they ruined Yoda", was my gut reaction, and it was intended to be a joke. You wouldn't actually think I would hold it against them for that now, would you? I wasn't being aggressive, merely humoristic. You're waaay over-analyzing things.
Ohhh silly me, it's not Yoda!!! That's why he had to look like a bubblehead then!! Hope this game has some yet unseen qualities that justify the hype because the ones seen are just sub-par.
@ShadowDragoon05 You want to use wow as an example. Thats a poor example. Gamers are getting tired of games with poor graphics. Rift runs on high settings with a gts 8800 and an old dual core with great results. That game looks a lot better than this junk. As far as knowing anything about business, kid I have been following the industry probably longer than you have been alive. Tell me. How is it living in your parents house?
"You're standing in a tomb...and I'm burying you in it!" "This isn't the first time I've crashed one of the Empire's parties!" Is it just me, or has Bioware started moving away from subtlety and good writing towards more bombastic Hollywood-style action and oneliners? I mean, that's what characterizes Star Wars, but is it too much to ask for some less cringe-worthy, prequeltastic writing?
I can't get my hands on it, if you like this trailer, the graphics, the gameplay and the acting, WHY?!!!
I'm starting to get a little frightened by these trailers. Everything looks great but the animations look half-done. The combat looks extremely stiff and the attacks don't look like they are actually hitting anyone. Whats the deal with this?
@moncealyo It's not always about the graphics that makes a game a good one; look at FFVII, graphics are pretty bad compared to today's standards, but it still has one of the best story lines around. @Infinite_Access Only a WoW fanboy would make that claim @Dominicobaggio You should really read the books, the technollogy is constantly advancing. the lightsabers, ships, weapons, they all won't be as advanced as they are in the current universe. And to the rest of you people: IT"S NOT YODA!!!!!!!!!!!!! get it through ya'lls thick skulls, it's not yoda, never will be
Erik1116 - That's not Yoda. That is another one of his species, but not him. Yoda isn't born for another 2000 (I think) some years after this game.
@tobbe4321 thin kabout it. This game is supposed to take place thousands of years back, that's why Yoda looks younger and sounds younger. I thought it should be fixed at first but then i realized the setting of this game.
