Sports Game of the Year: The Winner
This is GameSpot's pick for Best Sports Game of 2012.
I can't disagree with the choice but when they say this year has massive improvements is not true. Sure they have a simple mode now but the meat n bread of the game is exactly the same as FM12 and 11 for that matter.
You can get a deep understanding and appreciation of football from FM and really understand the intricacies of the game and enjoy it a lot more as a result I think. The career mode in FIFA is nearly unplayable if you've ever got into a FM game. It's really unforgiving at first but you get a real sense of accomplishment from building a team and shaping the club the way you want or even just tweaking your tactic at the right moment and seeing it pay off.
It may be just a bunch of numbers and text but each player is a lot more unique and you do get a better attachment to your players and they even seem more realistic than the copy n paste FIFA models, downloading the real logos, kits and player faces is a must for this game in my opinion.
Madden wasn't nominated, and FM13 beat the NBA game on Gamespot? IGN had it right, naming FIFA13, an actual sports game - not a derivative sports game (FM is a strategy game, using sports). NBA2K13 is an actual sports game, as was NHL13, and MLB13, which wasn't even nominated. Maybe they should have a category called "Sports Game for People who don't Watch (and/or can't Play) Sports". As you can tell from my avatar, this is a category of games that I really enjoy.
Really glad to see Football Manager 2013 take this award. It's not easy for a football (soccer) game to take this award in America.
As much as I want to say NHL. Having Played Football Manager games, they are like video game CRACK. Even if soccer/football isn't in your top 3 sports... it's that drastic in how much time and enjoyment you have. Add in the fact you can literally edit the game's players/teams/cities/stadiums almost at will... is astoundingly impressive. If there was a baseball or hockey game like this it would be Game of the Year material.
yes finally it won....the only game i ever need...i wish some sort of handheld device came out with only football manager
I hear that PES will be the returning king every year in the past 5-7 years and when it finally returned, G$ left it out because its made by a Japanese company...
o the bias...
FIFA 13 is too buggy. I prefer PES 2013 this year. Football Manager 2013 deserves this year's award.
Yep, I agree with this - i'm so addicted to it right now :) FIFA 13 had waaaay too many bugs/glitches to be considered this year. I wouldn't be surprised if FIFA 14 sales drop by a third when they release it next year.
Yes a worthy winner a sports game with depth and a game u actually have to put sum thought into wen FIFA and others on ere, excepts hotshots are re hashes of previous years with slight tweaks and FIFA in particular is dreadful this year and has nothing new to make me buy rather buy FIFA 12 than this year
Who the f**** writes FIFA soccer . WTF . JEEZ. The american football has a FIFA or what the hell??. FIFA soccer looool.
What the f is Football Manager I never even heard of this at all, what platform did this come out for if all you guys do not mind me asking.
FM is, by far, the franchise i've played most in my life... Waiting for a price drop on this year's version though. No other football game can compare to the level of commitment and thrills it provides. Speak with anyone that has played the game and their eyes will instantly light up.
fifa does the same thing as footbal manager but also lets you play with your team, im just surprised at how fifa 13 didnt win
@capnahdharr I won't deny that NHL 13 didn't deserve it this year, for the simple fact that there have been no significant differences between it and NHL 12, nor NHL 12 over NHL 11, etc., as a result of some very serious laziness/complacency on the part of EA Sports Canada. But while I'm sure "Football Manager 2013" is a super addictive game, given that pretty much all of the GameSpot staff in the video are English, I have a feeling there was a little bit of regional bias given to a football game over a hockey game, rather than the other way around as you seem to suggest. I can't imagine "NHL Manager 2013" winning anything, ever. (Gary Bettman jokes aside, please.)
@Fembot_Eulogy Funny. That's what I used to call kicking my big brother.
@uk_friday It would lose to AC III though ;)
@obsequies How? You've obviously never played it, it's a pretty detailed and in-depth game. Plus it's been part of the top sellers on Steam for a while.
@kennythomas26 PC game .. has been for a few decades and is probably the longest running game franchise ever (used to be Championship Manager covering only the English leagues, back in the days but nowadays spans over 30 leagues in several continents, I believe ..)
@ickyjanitor "fifa does the same thing as footbal manager". You crack me up. You don't have a clue, do you?
@ickyjanitor you'd be surprised about the depth of managing a football club in football manager than in fifa 13. Heck even i think Football manager 2005 is a deeper football managing experience than Fifa ever was
Saying NHL 13 is just like NHL 12 or NHL 11 is the most noob comment ever. DId you consider the new skating system and AI IQ features that makes this game so much better then any previous release. We're not talking of Madden here...
But yeah NHL Manager 2013 wouldn't win anything... based on the fact that Sports Interactive pulled the plug on Eastside Hockey Manager years ago because no one bought it.
@asyland He he, nice.
@dio81 Okay thank you and that might be the reason I did not know what it was with it being a PC game I have been losing touch with most of thew games that come out on the PC.
@kennythomas26 no prob. And FM13 is a game that caters to a specific audience; those who like football/soccer, who like to manage a team and who like stats a lot. It has an extensive database of thousands of reallife players from around the world, with skill stats based on pretty accurate scouting of these players. The researchers even do their job so greatly that often the game accurately predicted which players will be the new superstars in five years, which is pretty awesome. You can pick a team playing in lower leagues and turn them into football giants by skillfully managing your team, or you can just pick one of the world's best teams and manage them differently than their reallife managers and taking them to glory. With a bit of fantasy, you can roleplay being a new manager, starting out at a small team, slowly working yourself up to one of the greatest managers ever, having won all prizes in both domestic and international club football and winning regional cups and world cups as the manager of a national team.
But like I said: a specific audience, so some will like it, some will hate it .. judging by how extensively I describe the game right now, one could say I am someone who likes the game :P
