Second day of playing the game. I'm liking it in so much as the story seems interesting and the energy hex method of unlocking routes is interesting but really am beginning to grow annoyed with the fights, specifically boss fights. It's a novel system but it just seems overly tricky to master. Just when you think you've got it, something happens and you're suddenly in critical mode thinking to yourself 'I can't get the gems fixed and my shots count for squat while all I have is this one guy to kill so not much chance of regenning anyhow'. To avoid AoE you spread your fighters only to then discover they can't reach each other to heal (not that it makes much difference and you'll get slapped and die quite rapidly anyhow if you make one slip up). I want to see the rest of the game, I'm just not certain that spending hours on one fight early on just to see the next bit is worth it. Hm, we'll see.
It's been a long time since I've played a game that had legitimately hard boss battles that you could just fight again once you die.
It's something that's kind of disappeared from gaming over the years, but I guess so is genuine difficulty in gaming... sad dev move to get useless 5-year-olds hooked... it's enough to remove satisfaction entirely.
Dark Souls isn't too bad because you can try again, but it does mean that if you want to keep your souls, the boss is going to be harder the second time than the first.
In Devil May Cry 4 DMD mode, sure you can die and try again, but you can kiss goodbye to that SSS you wanted, even if you're Godlike the second time.
It seems like this game sort of curves away from that, which is a *good* thing.
Yes a hard game is great, and a hard game with great controls is even better, but to make you start again from the start if you die... that doesn't encourage you to play the game at all, never mind sinking hours into getting better at it.
It's a shame this game isn't on PC.
i got this game two days ago and so far im enjoying it. yeah its hard at first (took me few hours on the tutorials) but once you get grasp to the battle system its very much a walk in a park.
Yes, you will die a lot, yes, it is long, yes, it is fun and the fight mechanics are a blast. Enjoy it!
I'm mostly a PC gamer but OMG, I'm in love with the battle system of this game. I think this game is really under rated. glad to see Tom gave the score that it deserves.
I remember picking up this game on a total whim for the 360 a year ago and enjoying it immensely. Never beat it though. Now that I'm without a 360 but have a PS3, I may have to pick it up again.
You know, I thought the game was easy until I got to the first boss battle and it's been down hill since XD, it's an amazing game though even though I bought it like a day ago and I'm only on Chapter 2....
@penpusher Please :P The video shows that in nearly all fights people are jumping about shooting and raising a hit counter. Besides, my original comment was like a month ago, get over it.
@irishdude199210 oh dont worry I aint being protective I just hate it when people make an opinion they dont know enough to make .... I mean theres like two or three shots of people jumping about thats all :S
@penpusher Ok buddy, I have my own opinion on games. Just because GS gave it a high score doesn't mean I have to like it. I mean it's a mess because it's just jumping around and shooting. There's nothing else to it. I don't like the game, stop being so protective and leave it at that man. I don't like it, you do. Who cares? I certainly don't.
@irishdude199210 again I say I still dont understand how you come to that conclusion ... the video we both watched said nothing of the sort about the game ... you sound like youre bad mouthing it for the sake of it to be honest since nothing you say makes sense ... For example how does this video show you that its jumbled up and a mess?
@penpusher Defination of what I mean: Mess=all over the place, chaotic, unstructured, hectic. There it is in plain English.
@irishdude199210 no because the video you happen to be watching is of a high scoring game with not much wrong with it of which "a mess" was not one of the points ... So no I still dont understand ...
fetching a bottle of wine isnt classifiable as a quest? What about Legend of Zelda fetch quests? You deliver chickens, letters, saws, medicine... come on dude!
I love this game, it looks so fun, but dying isn't, I guess I need a challenge though, the characters look great and I like interesting storylines.
I haven't played FF13 yet but if this game is better, I guess i'll pass. This game actually appears boring. Maybe I need to go look at some youtube videos but all I see is the character jumping around shooting all the time. Isn't there anything else? Is this really an RPG or action game? Any towns to visit with people to talk to? What sort of side-quests do you do? This reviewer sucked and did really nothing for the game but made it look like junk.
Sounds like another JRPG that forces you into trial and error, no rhyme, no reason, no reward. I'll pass.
This game looks awesome! Finally a hard rpg, I never picked it up due to my poorness, but this is definitely my next pick!
This game is incredibly fun. And once you grasp the combat (which is quite easy to if you just do the tutorial at the arena), the game becomes INCREDIBLY easy, especially as the game progresses. Except, of course, for the optional dungeon that's present in most games.
I like many others over looked this as FF13 release was around the corner.....how wrong I was... love this game to bits refreshing change to the rpg genre. The combat system was the biggest seller for me
@ziibra... i have ff13 i thought it was great at first but after a while i relised that the game blows
Bad chad i fully agree. ff13 was a total piece of garbage. im going to sell it back and get this game right now
Dark Souls will be more difficult...
to put down.
