Superb question man, this really goes toward people forcing video games to be part of them every second.

Both you and Seb referred to the increase from maximal strength to absolute strength as a third. True, the gain is one third of your maximal strength. But raising 2/3 to 1 is an increase of a half, not a third.

It sounds much cooler to say that we become up to 50% stronger when we access our absolute strength!

Ingroups = Tribalism. for example separate nations are modern day ingroup tribes. Nothing new here.

On another note I always thought about trying Eve Online. MIght give it a shot, my type of game.

just like it mentions in the vid, when you put forth time and effort into a single item, you become part of a community that is exclusive and apart from others.

another example would be with the console wars. PC owners that game, build their own rigs. they take the time to research the hardware, the compatibility and troubleshoot if necessary during initial boot phase. consoles, plug and play. so there's the separation on that.

anyway, good episode. played SWTOR for 2 yrs and taking part with a community is what prolonged my departure. difficult when it happened.

"Gamers with a capital G will forsake everything and eat mac n' cheese or noodles and sacrifice everything for their game."

He got that one right.

Gamers with a capital G are just like heroine addicts, meth heads, alcoholics and most any other drug addicts.

When life gets rough "Gamers" eat noodles while "casual gamers" buy food instead of games?????

This is one of the stupidest things I've heard in my life... and I've heard a lot of stupid things...

So, even tho I play games EVERY single day, but I can't buy all the games I want because I need insignificant things like food, clothes, a house, etc I'm not a "Gamer"?

@kassador I don´t know exactly what is you problem... but what he is saying is quite simple to understand.

With non essential products you have basically 2 types. The one that really likes the product and it´s willing to sacrifice some of it´s essential necessities to accommodate the said product in their life, and the ones that are more casual to the product and won´t sacrifice anything of significance to get it. i.e. Food.

I dont really see whats so good in being called hardcore. That would make people think I spend whole days in front of my PC and never go outside. I have a friend who is that kind of hardcore. But I like just to call myself fan of the game or game series. The same way I am fan of some kind of band. Ofcourse I spend about 300+h in Skyrim. Witch is A LOT for me. But it was in the period since game was released till now, witch is a bit more than 2 years. Anyway its still game I spend most time in it.

eum ok why are you targeting eve on this one....the fanfest isn't Hardcore fandom Its an Actual community Wroking as a whole to create a game...if every companie would take as much time on there player as eve online does there would never ever ever be another COD.....it just so happens that most eve players are from that part of the world there not actualy traveling that far....

@SpLiTMaN Where are you from? I mean, no matter where you come from, Iceland is quite a distance and rather expensive. To me it seems someone's pretty passionate about EVE if he/she attended this fanfest. Besides, fandom and community aren't mutually exclusive. Those people are first and foremost fans of the game; it's the reason they congregate. I mean, it's called fanfest for a reason.

I think this gets thrown around too much. Fanboys try to call themselves hardcore gamers which is a complete joke. Fanboys spend more time on website forums than actually playing games. Fanboys are insecure about their purchase so they have to criticize what others get. Fanboys try to persuade others to like only what their console of choice offers and dislike games on other consoles that they have never played or never even seen. Fanboys are NOT hardcore gamers.

Hardcore gamers are the ones who play every game they own to the extreme, a gamer that is open to all genre's and likes of games, will play an 8-bit indie game in the 8th genre of consoles, actually comment on game forums for community and information. Thats my idea of a hardcore gamer. not some poser fanboy thats close minded towards another console...

@skiggy34 According to your logic, people who pour thousands of hours into mmo's like Eve and WoW aren't hardcore gamers, I couldn't disagree more.

A hardcore gamer is someone who spends the majority of their free time playing games and is passionate about the games they play. It shouldn't have anything to do with how many games you play.

Sounds like tribal/clan affiliations that stuck around in the modern world, or perhaps tribal/clan affiliations are a form of fan base.

Is this an "all rectangles are squares but not all squares are rectangles" set problem?

@BranKetra I must admit I associated 'hardcore gamer' with people who play videogames a lot, not with the politer version of a fan (which I think is what it meant in the context of this episode). My point was that the way in which a lot of 'hardcore gamers' justify their hobby doesn't really appear to be that different from 'fanboys' who passionately defend a specific title or platform. But I suppose that in this context 'hardcore gamer' means a fan of a particular title that doesn't rely on insult and aggression when defending that title. Still, I personally wouldn't want to be called 'hardcore', because to me that label carries too many negative connotations.

What's going on with hardcore fans? Mob sheep lemming fanaticism. That's what. Gaming had its heyday in the late 1990s. It went to shit in 2005 -2006 after everyone was forced online and the last decent sports games came out. Now 90% of the market is dystopian shooters that celebrate a cartoon culture of violence and death as fun pastime. How many of these games can you play before overkill sets in? I miss sports games. Without them, the industry has become saturated by a RPG genre of one trick pony gaming.

@Dannystaples14 @BallOBaseSimmerEA Sports has mailed in too many modern titles and is not the same company that it once was in the heyday of PC gaming. And it was not the only one to release sports games.

to me it is the same as what we call casual and harcore gamers ... a stupid term for assholes who needs to only play M+ games because they are soooooooo hardcore.

I never understood being a fan and defending something so bad ... I do what I do and love what I love and the day to won't speak to me anymore I'll go somewhere else ... I don't need to bash others to feel better.

Saddly this is how it is here ... all of a sudden I feel nostalgic of the day the only gaming news was through mag that came out once a month ...
