What happened to the good old days of buying a game on a disk, playing it, enjoying it, then moving on to another game...on a disk. Why does everything these days have to be so complicated? ...I'm getting old :(

You can't convince me that games would be massively improved by a 2 hour game length.  As an Otaku, my stories last 25 episodes or about 600 minutes and these are on the short end.  You can't win the argument that Death Note or Code Geass could have been improved even marginally by only having 2 hours to tell those stories.  The same logic applies to Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Heavy Rain, or any game with a strong basis in story.  Longer is better, period.  Games have the opportunity to tell long, well written and fleshed out stories because its cheaper to make a 40 hour game than a 40 hour movie.

I have to say I really love this series, one of the few things on Gamespot I actually look for when the next one's up.

BTW I love how tom talk's about hardware limitations when he is not a programmer let alone a video game developer. The ps3 has limitations, all hardware does. The reason why more powerful hardware would be good is for performance increases. more and more games would run at 60fps, include anisotropic filtering, DX11 support etc. Most games on the current gen systems do not have the power to support true 1080p gaming let alone 60fps and if they do then compromises have to be made like lower resolution and less particle densities, smaller draw distance etc. Draw distance is a Huge factor as well, if the hardware was up to par we could have bigger more expansive worlds that you would actually see from miles away. I just want console games to evolve so that we have a more immersive gaming experience. Graphics are not the only thing that will benefit from this increase in hardware. Developer's can write far more complicated AI, bigger worlds, better Physics and a more immersive gaming experience.

I am a huge fan of the street fighter series. This series has been in my life for as long as i can remember and while i wish this set included more games from the street fighter series, I am still planning on buying this set. With the editions of the cd's the movies and all of the DLC, I feel that this set is totally worth it's price tag.

When will quoted for truth be listed in the video drop down list on the site? Id like to just go right to that page rather than searching through the whole video list.

I don't think people demand long games for the sake of long games. What people demand is value for money. Go ahead and make a brilliant game that is 2 hours long but don't dare charge $100 (Aussie pricing) for it.

"let's charge IDIOTIC GAMERS an additional....for a few more hours" Wait a minute, I paid extra money for Gears 3 DLC content only because the main game was A+++ phenominal. Gears 3 is not a 5 hour piece of trash (like many other 5 hours piece of trash games), so I gladly paid extra money in order to support a great developer. Epic games is pushing the industry forward with things such as Unreal engine 4. Thank goodness intelligent gamers are supporting them !!!

am sure EA will pick up KoA and i still think it's too early for a new system console

Sorry but I can remember some of the greatest moments of my life was seeing new consoles and what that brought to the table so if its there go for it

I think developers need a new way to challenge gamers.  If you look at the history of games, it's an evolution of player challenge.  Leaps in technology always change the chemirtry, but the reaction in the player is at core the same.  In this generation, I think developers have struggled to engage players throughout the course of an entire game.  This is an ongoing issue in the 3D age because games are so complex that I think a lot of developers lose sight of their vision in the making.

I can't believe a game that sells 1,200,000 copies can be considered a failure.

I can see myself following the trollkind quote at around 9:50. Think am gonna wait a while before buying next gen, graphics is one of the least important aspect in a game to me anyway. I had an xbox and now a 360 and am not that far behind on the game catalogue so i wont be able to continue playing 360 for years after next gen launch. But i think am gonna buy a ps3 and all the exclusive franchises once next gen is here...should be a cheap way of keeping me busy for maybe a year or 2 with some awesome games i never got to play...

shotup81
shotup81

and isn't the PS Move and the 360 Kenect new tech? they just came out wait a couple years and then make something new

shotup81
shotup81

here is an idea for next gen consoles... wait till people ACTUALLY have money to spend and wait till the economy gets better so people will actually buy them and buy the games without taking out a loan.

There is no justice in the gaming world. I liked Amalur a lot and bought it day one. Now the studio falls apart. I am not for people losing their jobs but why can this happen to shovel ware companies more often instead of developers like 38 studios.

good show.  I feel the crew is starting to get into the groove of things.  Would be nice to see Caro, Shawn, and KVO as well, but good start for now

Good show guys.  I hope you eventually will post audio versions on iTunes.

The talk about movie-length games.  My take is that length and price do need to be tied together at least as some part of the equation.  You all mentioned Flower and Journey.  If Sony charged $60 for those games would you still say the length doesn't matter?  I'm not so sure.  I don't mind shorter experiences in games but like John said, if a game is going to be movie-length then it should be priced more in line with a movie ticket or DVD price.

It's a hard thing to quantify exactly but I want to feel like I got my money's worth for a game, especially a $60 game, and length of single-player experience does play a part in that.

I so hope that Activision won't restrict Bungie like they did Treyarch.

So if 38 Studios is gone, what happens to Kingdoms of Amular? Will it no longer be distributed?

I want to know, what game is the video of the female robot being put together/taken apart from?

I agree with the next gen being out in 2017 comment.  Games on the PS3 look just fine, and the PS4 isn't going to be innovating in a way that will drive new IP's that can't already be started on the PS3.

Is gamespot going to put this new brand of episodes into iTunes?

There are plenty of films such as Mulholland Drive where the plot is as much inferred as it is in SotC so I don't see the game's plot as a problem, in fact that inferrance probably works better in game or book form than a film.

As for Goichi Suda creating a 2 hour game, I would like to see more short form games but story and characters aside, imagine 2 hours of God Hand or SotD the backdrops and  traversing were uninteresting only punctuated by instadeath sections and anachronistic boss fights.

Hear hear for the RSS feed.

Was that Homer back there? Why you no say Homer is there?

There's a reason why only Brendan and Tom are in this show. There's a certain kind of chemistry between them that I've always enjoyed... Can't really put my finger on it. Few other gamespotter can comment on things with their kind of bite and humor. John has it, too, which makes him the perfect host for this.

Keep it up boys.

Mc Shea,

Do you realize how much games cost to develop?

Fiscaldeal

I'm all for the idea of shorter games. I often judge experiences based on what impact they have on me, be it mentally or emotionally. Such qualities, when not epic in scope, are unrelated to length. This is true across any medium. My two favorite games are Journey and To the Moon. The former is an hour and a half long and the latter takes roughly four hours to complete. Together they cost less than half that of a current AAA title. Individually they put most of my collection to shame. I'll take that math any day of the week.

Why in the studio where TheHotSpot was? How disturbing and yet a glowing statue is what convinces Tom to buy the Street Fighter package.

They nailed the next gen issue....

With everything going on now I shudder to think what will happen next gen....

I'm sick of all the way I'm getting screwed over by publishers, my black list is getting pretty big.......

That Street Fighter collection.....not really worth it, maybe if you played a lot but haven't played these but if you play a lot why haven't you played these yet?? a paradox, I agree though I'd like to see something behind the scenes how games are made....

I'm not sure I like that Activision/Bungie deal.....Timed console exclusive, planned DLC and it sounds like they'll be working 24/7 for 8 years.....IDK they did good with Halo, the first one was awesome, second one not so much but 3 and ODST were great, Reach was good but Gold ran out and I never renewed.....

@Megotaku77 That wasn't their point. They're point was that games should be as long as they need to be, without all the extra fluff just so they can say "Hey, look over here! Our game's 40 hours long!". if that 40 hours is 100% quality content, with little to no filler, then go right ahead.

Deevoshun

@professorXzaver Agree!  Also for me part of the reason I am ok with Epic's DLC is because it never feels like content that should have already been in game at launch.  But rather something extra for those who want it.

marinermick

@professorXzaver Totally agree. Gears is a brilliant trilogy that started strong and got better with every iteration. Tons of value up front and solid dlc that added to already complete games both from a story and MP perspective. Love Love Love my gears!

@shotup81 I would say the Kinect is new tech... not good tech, but new. As for the Move, that is basically the same thing released in 2006 by Nintendo... with motion plus.

@angeloti83 For somethings that just don't pop out.   You got to get things rolling before someone says ok we need it now.  Plus if you got a computer that is just enough you start to get funny problems.

@FireVixen  I believe that the part with the female robot being put together was not from an actual game. I think it was a tech demo, just trying to push the limits of what is available today.

@mtait01 Kinect is not new tech. Kinect is an advanced version of the eye toy. It also has a microphone. Is not new just better but, even kinect still sucks for games. I have it and is only good for Dance Central.
