@UniversalPie It's about resources. The higher the graphics the more content your pc needs to keep track of when a massive amount of players are on screen. No net code can be efficient enough to render 80 enemy players, their guns, projectiles, track those projectiles, and etc. The more players playing the more data exchanged between you and the server. The vast majority of the games hardware draw will be from tracking these things. For every action you take it's uploaded to the server and passed to all other observable players. Tons of data, tons of processing, tons of that on your end. No engine can manage that data without performance loss.
@Necromantic45 How exactly do you think graphics would add lag server-side? That makes no sense... The graphics are handled client-side...
Looks like a tech upgrade to Planetside, rather than a whole new game. Which is brilliant, since PS is one of the best PC games ever made, and by far the best MMO ever made.
I love how people continue to complain about graphics, especially in online games, reality check people, can't have the latest and greatest graphics in a game, those servers have to process all that information at once to ensure minimal lag, even with the powerful hardware we have, asking for something like Crysis with 32-64 people online simultaneous across hundreds of servers won't happen. Graphics don't make a game anyways, proper blend of gameplay/graphics make a great game, this could be great.
Planet Side was a great game on paper, with many flaws as a shooter. I remember emptying 4 clips into someone before they died. Long strolls to get to the action. Hardcore investment of time to get to drive a weak vehicle. But if they do it right this time, man this will be the bomb.
This could be good, just as long as they don't make it impossible for newer players to actually get into the game. The only reason why I didn't play it was because it was impossible to get into the game. It needs better starting weapons, a tutorial, and not that stupid license thing that you need in order to drive something. I swear, I was stuck with either walking extremely long distances only to get shot in the face, and have to spawn all the way back.
Planetside 2, Tribes Ascend, The Old Republic, Battlefield 3, ..., this is definitly the year to buy a new computer! xD
can't wait, but please release some information about total numbers in a battle, PS was about 500 right? how many can we expect? how many battle ranks are there? need to get www.planetside2.com up and running with a bit more info!! :p
This will undoubtedly be very fun. Graphics? Epic care, the graphics seem to do the job, and if lowering graphics a bit allows more players to play online then I'm very much for it! I still remember actually playing as a platoon of 4 squads and coordinating strikes, it was probably one of my greatest gaming moments ever. Want graphics? Go play Black Ops or something.
@Entropy730 ehh i would, but i like to buy the first game in series because of the story, i made that mistake with mass effect and kingdom hearts
@peanut1229 don't waste your money or your time. you will get extremely frustrated and disappointed within 1 hour... just wait for the new one to see if its any good.. the first one sucked ass
I loved and hated Planetside back in the day. Loved it when I was in crazy epic battles, hated it when I was walking for AGEs to get to those crazy epic battles.
First PS was good/great, but got stale. But the ultimate reason I unsubscribed was the complete lack of hitboxes. I am sorry, a headshot is a headshot is a headshot. Make sniping difficult, leave the vehicles the way they were and for God's sake, add hitboxes and you'll have a subscriber for years here.
i never heard of this game, and now i wish i did, seems amazing, i might have to go buy the first one
hell yes. hopefully this will deliver the mmo shooter experience we all hoped for with mag. the original was great and i cant wait for this one.
Planetside was the first game i played for 8 hours straight, and felt slightly guilty for doing so, i cant imagine that this game will be as good. But i sure hope it is!
Hopefully they make the tweaks that are needed... if they do this game will be an instant classic. The original was almost there but came up a little short..
FINALLY! It's moments like these that I take up religion again briefly... This has been a long time coming.
AT LAST!!!! I rejoice while seeing this project coming true! cant believe how much time i've spent on PS... its too bad ppl dont know the game, it was soooo good... having hundreds of ppl fighting at the same place, the same time...
The original was a severely overlooked FPS MMO. If they do it right, this game could trash many other games out there. I am very much excited about this title!
hope this one is game wise as good as the first but with a more updated feel loved flying the huge transports in the first one was a great pilot to but we will see if i play this one what with the new star wars one comeing out and all
Hmm I was in the beta for the first one, I remember that game being pretty fun and I was a subscriber for a little bit. Problem was it got pretty repetitive.
The first Planetside was a fairly decent game. I only chose not to continue because I went with SWG (and look how that turned out..lol). It was a hard choice between the two at the time but I was, after all, a die-hard Star Wars fan. Anyway, as long as this one isn't going to be a F2P (or P2W) shooter, I may consider it.
@Raeldor Yes I definitely do. I was excited at the concept of a game with the pacing of an FPS MMO, since the RPG ones never much appealed to me...and then I played it. It was almost like I could already see how, say, someone would feel about the game now (in terms of it's poor interface and playability). By and large the game was a major disappointment to me, and frankly, from what I can tell, in spite of this sequel coming up, it didn't seem like it was much of a critical or even financial success.
HOLY CRAP!! I spent a bajillion hours playing the first planetside, i have a good feeling about this one..
@Dirk13 Really, you think so? I remember having a blast playing this game. Not sure I'd go as far as to call it an MMO, but ships, transports, bases and saved character progression and leveling in an FPS. I don't think anything else came close at the time.
@Halosqrrl Its an MMO FPS. It will naturally have scaled down visuals since it needs to render many more player on screen and provide a stable platform to host a persistant game world with hundreds to thousands of players at the same time.
I really hope it has a guildwars like subscription system,i really dont like the monthly subscription system.
