planetside2 is nowhere near as good as i was expecting it to be. I understand it is extremely difficult to make a lag-free MMO and ESPECIALLY using a first person shooter. But that doesnt explain to me why the graphics at first glance upon spawning inside a building (all graphics on highest settings gtx590) looks like an N64 game. The textures on 90% items are non-existent and the soldiers that are textured look like what you would NOT expect from sony 2012 title. The lighting however is gorgeous at times and when the sun rises on the cliffside you really get a great feel of the game. But the time of the day changes wayy too fast and most of the time the gamma or contrast or something makes night time look gray rather than black/dark. Besides that the combat is just plain laggy, the framerate is clunky, and you can run around for an hour (dropping into a HEAVY instant combat zones that are completely empty?) not being able to find any action. And when you do find the action you need to just hold down the trigger and hope that your connection registers a kill before your opponents.

The Mission System won't solve those problems. PS1's Lattice system is the answer to most of PS2's woes. Most of the scenes in that video which feature Large numbers of TR, are actually showing my outfit "The Enclave". We run Ops every weeknight with around 100 players on Teamspeak, with an accompanying Live Stream. Stream: http://www.twitch.tv/buzzcutpsycho outfit website: http://enclaveoilrig.com/newsite/

It's looking really good but with a conflict of the scale on offer commanders and a command structure will be needed.

Commanders from single map to over all war co-ordination will need the tools to be able to control a large dynamic warzone and that's purely down to the developers to sort out what will be available. Even with Skype, Vent, TS etc. they'll still need map controls and ways to direct troops on screen.

LOL the commentary (and video foutage) is so out of context.. this i sgoing to be the best game of the year whenever it is out. It ii just soooooooo awsome lol.. go check on you tube (totalbiscuit has some nice videos.. ) but more importantly get the latest videos as the beta is closed and in conctant progress.. so the first videos are going to be a bit far from what it is totay..^^ and it is getting great!! Planetside 1 was already the best fps (and mmo) that players have experienced, with hundreds of players fighting..Guess what happen years laters and thousands of players taking over territories.. ^^ can't wait for the open beta!!

I'm playing Beta now. The game (with all its bugs) is amazing. The other day, i was involved in a small 8 man skirmish for a small power plant, then 10 mins later I was in a battle of over 200 people for one city, with ways to spawn in all over, (spawn beacons and galaxy ships. When the game is done it's definitely going to be worth playing.

This video has a lot of truth.  LOTS of potential so far.

I must say the video seems a bit.. outdated. First the game is best played in groups and already it actively encourages people to play in 12 player squads (including an auto join option), 4 of which can be combined into a platoon. This already allows for large groups to organize and head into battle. This also solves the issue of spawning further from battle as you can use spawn beacons, and squads usually use their own transportation. Dedicated voice channels are available as well. Also in game already are Outfits- the equivalent to guilds you can join who can coordinate assaults involving hundreds of players. These outfits, once the game is out of beta and running will provide the command backbone for the empires and collaboratively direct the flow of the war. Finding a big fight and people to fight alongside with is rarely a problem even now in beta.

I can't watch this (nor the Guild Wars 2 video on the homepage).  It keeps saying there's a plugin needed to display the content.

Also, I'd like to add that the servers have a population cap on them right now to disperse the testers amongst the different servers to test the load. Once you get the actually 2000 players out there, there's going to be a lot more going on.

This is honestly one of the worst videos I've seen on this site. It's as if the person who wrote this actually has no idea what state the game is in. It's in CLOSED BETA. This isn't some early access demo "beta" that you get with games like CoD or BF. This game is being put together more and more on a DAILY basis. Most of the faction/outfit/platoon/squad mechanics haven't been implemented yet.The capture mechanics for bases and territories haven't been fully implemented yet. They're just ironing out bugs and framerate issues right now, while trying to minimize lag. They haven't even starte implementing all of the certifications or begun weapon balance. This is a game in a raw state and it's constantly being changed with feedback from the community via the beta forums. These guys are listening and communicating every day with the fanbase and videos like this do more to hurt the growth of the game than do it justice by ignoring it's current state and criticizing it like it's not a work in progress. I'm honestly surprised more people from the beta aren't here ripping this guy a new one.

Interesting, i'll try it for sure

but pretty sure i won't dedicate myself to it since i'm a hardcore Battlefield player..

I'm interested, as long as it is decently optimized for somewhat modern systems.

It's a closed beta. Not all features are in yet. And if you've been actually paying attention, they have already confirmed commanders and extended squads.

looks intresting since its a massive game play

WHAT??? COMMAND RANKS??? I wish they thought of that in PS1.... DUH!!!

Of course theres gonna be command ranks... like a platoon commander who can talk to other platoon commanders so they can coordinate attacks on different base or have different objectives like diversion or harrassment... just like in a real conflict...

dammit ppl.. THIS IS WAR!!! not a  tiny skirmish between 16 players...

If these games do not became virtual reality,

must to be keep in simple.

Very cool to play, but very boring like that.

The mix of strategy that Natural Selection 2 started looks cool,

where the players could build the map in the action war at the way they want.

While other teams avoid by destroying it,

so everybody would be playing the game than just dying all the time.

Then using vehicles to grab resources,

war and scenario destruction for build space,

shooting against teams for action,

strategy to build the map.

Psh... I'm glad their will be lulls.. I personally get fatigued mentally if I'm in the action constantly, it will be nice to have that REASONABLE distance to the combat zone i have to run to or drive to, gather my thoughts and progress into the combat instead of being dropped in the shit right away. Personally i think more shooters need to stray FAR away from what CoD is like, which is a complete fagfest... oops fragfest and start putting in some tactical depth to the shooter genre again.

I have a beta key, and yeah, it feels like it's a long way from being done. So far it's pretty similar to Planetside 1.

Hopefully they find some kind of way to limit the excessive use of vehicles that killed Planetside 1. It started as an incredible war waged between massive infantry units with awesome and exciting front line battles (which you couldn't find in any other FPS in even near that massive of a scale).. Then as the playerbase ranked up it became basically.. tanks vs tanks vs more tanks vs planes picking off large groups of infantry like they are just a side note. I could just play battlefield if I wanted to drive a tank around and shoot at other tanks while killing infantry like nothing. Sadly, it lost that special something that made it unique.. plus it was 15 bucks a month.

If they can keep the game in that pure state PS1 was in before vehicles completely took over the open battlefield I will totally love it. If not.. well, it'll be free.

I think they've been talking about the teamplay, with commanders and other voice talk in-game, and then being able to team up with squads and bigger groups of allies in order to organize what you're doing.

It sounded they are planning ways to get into clan-like groups, with it still being pretty casual (like not having to commit to an actual clan).

Maybe further along in the beta those things will be more implemented (unless they're already happening; I haven't been on the PlanetSide 2 forums and don't have a beta key yet)

Is this a freemium or is it actually free?

I don't mind some downtime as well, but I'm just hoping there are some decent rewards for capturing bases and destroying large amount of enemies. The original Planetside didn't have much in the way of rewards except gaining skill points, leveling and fraction specific bonuses. You could capture and hold towers and not really get any major reward. After about a year of playing it just got boring and the devs decided to gimp classes and weapons to try and excite the fans, but it did the total opposite. Gamers got pissed that some weapons were way stronger then others and patch after patch started to make the game sluggish and unplayable. I'm hoping this doesn't happen with PS2. I'll be very disappointed.

This video is a little negative... No this isn't COD and downtime is not a bad thing.  I don't have to be shooting my gun non-stop to be entertained.  Planning, tactics and logistics are what make Planetside original.  What makes a battle great if you are in it ALL the time?  The fact that it takes effort to find battles is what makes them rewarding.  Too many shooters have become mindless games for kids with A.D.D. It is good to see a game with SOME tactical depth.  Lets not forget... THIS IS A FREE GAME AS WELL.....  They are providing an AAA game for free... that is hard to be negative about.

@The_Red_Aphid Perhaps you didn't hear the part where he says it's in closed beta and that many of the things related to pacing haven't been implemented yet?

.. hehe .. you can soon forget about battlefield... it is gonna be a bit like you are playing a gameboy and the Play Station 4 just came out.. trust me I played Planetside 1 and I can see where the 2 is going.. it's gonna be crasy..!

@WizardGlass Then you should donate your beta key back to people that actually want to get in and check it out. Send it my way :)

@MoreThot Depends on the game. I still say the old quake3/unreal styled shooters are the most fun because they were faster. I've recently started playing Xonotic (which is excellent btw if you miss those arena shooters) and i'm enjoying it much more than CoD or BF3 and that is because the pacing is much faster than those.

That being said, this is Planetside which is obviously a strategy based game and that pacing probably wouldn't work. Still, I hope that there is still some fast, intense, adrenaline pumping action and its not all jumping behind cover every time you are fired at.

Also, to anyone playing the Beta, how is the vehicle balancing? Do you pretty much get dominated if you aren't in one?

@IcyToasters F11 to autojoin a squad and the in-game voice-comms is also there.Love that there is a Proximity voice comm too, in case you go solo with random people, or fly a Galaxy(that big plane/spawnpoint) and need to tell everyone when to drop or something. The game is very much in beta tho, still some bugs to iron out and a lot of the stuff is still to be added.

@merrakul Tried not to focus too much on the negative, more on suggesting things they could do to make this shooter truly special. So much potential here, and a lot of it is already being realized. Looking forward to this game being all it can be!

@Abysshalolover Free to playYou can spend some cash on cosmetic stuff tho. I would love to see a whole squad or Zebra colored tanks, Elite Zebra squad FTW ;)

LOL funny comment.. for someone who is gonna jump on the game like everyone else as soon as it is out..!! Understandble for the best fps (and mmo) ever done)  AND a closed beta where everything changes all the time (weapons, capture mechanics, vehicles.. basically everything) is.....  A closed beta...

The_Red_Aphid
The_Red_Aphid

@Tixylixx It's still in closed beta.  2 of the 3 continents aren't even done yet and one of the factions weapons are unfinished with placeholder stats from one of the other factions.Your ignorance on the subject exposes you as either an idiot or a troll...possibly both.

@Psycold  @WizardGlass it's disjointed, big gaps between fights, a serious lack of direction, there's no cohesive sense of what is going on and why you're doing it. This would be forgivable if the fighting actually felt 'right' - it doesn't - it feels 'light' and spongy with a lack of kick. I'm seriously pissed off about joining alpha squad.

@WizardGlass  @zync-  @Draco416 Which you can buy with earned ingame currency. It's designed with a mix of TF2's and LoL's F2P system. The only thing you can't buy with ingame currency is cosmetic(LoL) and weapons are sidegrades(TF2). The game is still nowhere close to finished and many of the game's mechanics aren't implemented yet.
