@greendud123 If you would read closer, you could see that I suggested only video reviewing top scoring games. I didn't say a game shouldn't get any review. I'm pretty certain that 3.5 (Pirates) is less than 8.5 (Frozen Synapse). Are you appalled that Gamespot judges games to be good/bad? What do you expect the critics to do? I'd prefer they continue to judge the games as good and bad so I know where to best spend my limited time and money.
@YagerMyster And who would decide what a "Terrible" game is? you? Just because you don't like it dosen't mean its a terrible game that shoulden't get a review.
Why do a video review for a terrible game, yet skip doing video reviews for better scoring games? How do you choose what to do a video review for, and what to only do a text review for? A score of 3.5 tells me to stay away quite handily... but I could use a more in depth review of Frozen Synapse to determine if I want to spend my money there or save for another title. Usually I enjoy your video reviews, but I'm disappointed this was chosen vs. a more worthy title.
@BigBigR I'm using Google Chrome, and while I can watch the videos, pixels often disappear and make it impossible to understand the video. And it happens on my other browsers too! What gives?
@steevonson -- There aren't actually a whole lot of comparisons to make. The games are superficially similar. However, in Black Cove, there are no minigames, no food considerations, no turn-based land battles; there is one type of ammo, and you never take wind into consideration. They really don't play a whole lot alike.
It seems silly to spend significant time drawing direct comparisons between the games in a review. Why would you doubt its accuracy? I don't spend paragraphs in every sci-fi shooter review comparing their mechanics to Half-Life. While we naturally draw some comparisons to other games in our reviews, we review them on their own merits; spending five minutes talking about how this game compares to Pirates! would make no sense. I am not sure I understand the complaint.
I wish you hadn't focused so much on the glitches of your advanced copy of this game and instead would have talked about what I was actually looking for: comparisons between it and Sid Meier's Pirates! That this review doesn't mention it actually makes me skeptical of it's accuracy.
Sigh... Is anyone else using Firefox 5 and not being able to view any videos at all? I have to use another browser, and its just here on Gamestop, other sites work just fine.
Maybe the AI Pirates crash into stuff cause they are really bad sailors. Yeah, yeah bad joke. Anyhow, I think there is a patch out for the game.
@chadster14, they already have, its called Sid Meier's Pirates! Definitely something to check out... and of course the monkey island series....
@Devo_83 -- @Code135 -- We would have loved to do a Frozen Synapse video review. But it was reviewed by a freelancer--i.e., someone that doesn't work in the offices. In cases like that, it isn't viable to do a video review, for a number of reasons.
Whether or not a video review is done also depends on a large variety of factors--how busy the GS Live team is, availability of the right staff, and so on. In a perfect world, we could do a video review of every game. In a not-so-perfect world, we do as many as we can with the resources we have. And you'd be surprised; when we go for a while without doing a video review of a bad game, people ask us for one!
I never heard word 'nothng' and 'boring' said so many times when someone's reviewing a game. The game deserves it. I played the demo and had 15-20 fps no matter what settings I make.
@devo_83 -Good one. The typical response is 'we can't video review everything' which of course is true, but this game has a low score universally, & a demo, we can without a penny wasted figure this one out ourselves. Frozen Synapse (at least where I've checked) doesn't have a demo & has scored well but the gameplay isn't for everyone & a video review would've been helpful for some people. Plus it would help it sell. I bought it & don't regret it (Frozen Synapse).
Remember guys according to tweakguides.com the only reasson games are buggy and crash is because of the bad crackers... and on topic i wanted a pirate game :(
@Devo_83 Now THAT's something worth doing ... cr***y games get video reviews while the synapse only gets a freaking written review, it's true that you can't really get too much footage from the game since it's gonna end up as spoilers but still ... that game deserves it ! I expect Kevin on the upcoming Hotspot podcast to rage on HOW can people make games like that ... :P
Lol, the crashes and that "gameplay" sequence at the end with the pirate laughing shows how bad this game is.
Looks like a potentially good game let down by poor coding and half-baked level design. Could be fixed with a big patch but probably won't be. Shame really.
@Trustmyreview Lol, that's because glitches are the only thing to talk about with this game. It has NOTHING else going for it other than the quirky humor...which he talked about.
LOL at the whale swimming through everything.. This review is hilarious! Shame cuz the graphics really do look pretty.
I bet the guy who was in charge of the admittedly beautiful graphics was looking at the rest of his mentally challenged development team, going, "How the f' did I get here?".
Finally Stalin vs. Martians has some competition for lamest RTS of the decade. I actually bought this POS without doing much research or playing a demo.FAIL. The only treasure in this game is a chest full to the brim of unrealized, underdeveloped concepts, poor mechanics and lackluster storytelling. oh yeah, and the worst attempts at humor I've seen in a game by way of the 1000 pirate jokes. Clowns. EDIT: This game just got a 900mb facelift...lol its only 1.46gb altogether.
Sid Meier's are 7 years old and people still love it isn't that telling you something? We WANT SEQUEL!
Just release sid meier's pirates every 5 years and my pirate gaming fix will be sorted! :-) In fact replace From Dust with a remake of Populous, Dungeons with a remake of Dungeon Keeper and the world would be a richer place. Hell, just re-release Syndicate and world peace will begin immediately ;-)
I can see how this would have had potential but it sucks when they release a buggy and even to easy and sort or dumbed down game that could have been so much more :(
