Honnestly I don't get why GW2 gets so much acclaim. I bought it, and went back to WoW after a dozen hours. I played a Norn (worst lore ever). if it's a mmo, why put it in RPG category ? Maybe it's mmo of the year but that's it.
I long for the days where games of actual caliber, like Planescape : Torment or BG could have been on the list.
What the fuck? If PC Game, where bloody exclusives nominees in that kind of nonsense? I only see Guild Wars 2. Remove all other.
Where the hell Diablo III ? Where Black Mesa ????? Torchlight 2 ? Dota 2 ? Tribes: Ascend ? PlanetSide 2 ? DEPONIA ??? Natural Selection 2 ? Crazy fucking Hotline Miami ? FTL ? Thirty Flights of Loving ? Hawken ? Counter-Strike: Global Offensive ? Legend of Grimrock ? Botanicula ? Lone Survivor ? Intrusion 2 ? Quantum Conandrum ?
Gamespot, you specifically screwed >.<
PC Game of the year and only one is PC exclusive. Guild Wars 2 should be the only candidate, if a console port wins this category the world is really going nuts.
What the f... gamespot???
Far cry 3..... what's up with that??
I'm sure a lot of poeple here would agree it was better then dishonered..
They really needed to consider NS2 for this list, easily the most fun game i have ever played and a ton better than the games here that are not even pc exclusive (except GW2). Honestly, Dishonored was great and so was GW2, but NS2 deserved this title for the quality of a game made by such a tiny group of people
Console games sux, i like only few scrollers, its for small kids or people without brains who can understand only , push the button, looks very bad vs pc and controls is very poor vs
What stated below is just my opinion.
THE WALKING DEAD - Playing TWD on a console or even an iPad is rather enjoyable than on a PC. Not a winner to me.
DISHONORED - Considering how much i love the game's style and design, graphics are poor, PC version is a non-superior, did NOT stand out the platform. Not a winner to me.
MASS EFFECT 3 - Was crap. Not a winner to me.
XCOM: ENEMY UNKNOWN and GUILD WARS2 are most likely to get that PC GAME OF THE YEAR award.
I feel sorry for ME3 everyone abandoned it I am a fan of ME series and I still believe that ME3 could win
"PC" game of the year, and only one of the games listed are PC games... Where are Planetside 2, Civ 5: G&K and Natural Selection? GS needs new editors.
The Walking Dead will win this award in a breeze and will be a serious contender for Gamespot's all-around GOTY 2012.
If GW2 gets game of the year we might as well expect facebook games to take it next year. Not a bad game, brings great uniqueness in the way it looks and it's powered by Jeremy Soule's music which makes it great. But other then that having a roll ability and having to grind things that are not quests is nothing groundbreaking. Not to mention that it almost has no RPG depth when it comes to stats choice etc. Imo very streamlined games should not be encouraged, no matter how pretty they look.
@An0therWay As with every year, we choose the best games available for the platform, not the best games that are only on that platform. Each year, people seem so surprised and shocked, yet this has our policy, year in and year out. But I suppose we must say it again, year in and year out: we do not choose just exclusives. And why would we? If a game is awesome, it's awesome. We are not platform elitists.
better then dishonored? wow what a fail comment xD
@megatrunks Not by a long Shot...And don't feel sorry for ME 3! The game was sacrificed in the altar of Money by BioWare in tribute of their God EA...It's too late to go back now. They are even talking about Mass Effect 4 (which is actually going to happen) so...let it go.
@pelvist Planetside 2 is F2P with little actual content (almost never have F2P games been considered for Gamespot's GOTY), Civ 5: G&K is an expansion that doesn't add enough new content, and Natural Selection simply isn't a triple-A title like the games Gamespot has listed--though I'm sure they seriously considered it. GS doesn't need new editors, you need to think your thoughts through.
@Storyz While I agree that GW2 isn't all that it's cracked up to be, I think a good game should still be recognized, whether or not it's streamlined. For one, it's a pretty subjective term, and two, it's not always a bad thing. Just because something is overly complicated doesn't mean that it's good. I'm studying physics, so I've come to the way of thinking that simple can be good. Am I going to solve a ball rolling down a ramp with Lagrangian or relativity? Hell no! I could, but it would be entirely necessary... unless the ramp was attached to a series of pendulums and springs or moving at the speed of light or something.
@KingRawer i ask myself the same question
@KingRawer cuz editors wont it in the list .
@Tripwolf First of all you are just a pathetic hater. I bet you never played the game and if you did you either had expectation of a WoW clone or got mad that it is totally diferent. You post hate about the game everywhere i see you. GTFO. 2nd of all far cry is multiplatform and gw 2 is pc exclusive. Leaving the goods or bads out for both games which one should win the platform award? an exclusive game to that platform or a hybrid? Now shoo to you grinding p2w mmo of you choice.
how is dishonored is better??
some dush that can be a rat... ohh yeah he can also take control on an enemy and die from his own bullet...
common... far cry 3 really had a stronger impact both game environment and gameplay
Sure the dishonored story was better then far cry 3's
but the gameplay and the environment is much more awesome then dishonored.
In my personal opinion.. There nothing in dishonored that kept pull me in to this game.
where far cry 3 always kept me with the finger on the trigger.....
but even tough far cry is better than other games in this list
@UltraredM Planetside 2 has little content? LMAO!!!! Yeah ok... Civ 5 G&K is a standalone expansion that was also nominated in another lineup here on GS and BTW it adds a LOT of new content, and Natural Selection is an 8.0 on GS same as The Walking Dead is, so I think you need to think your through.
@poster012 And I agree with you. But as good simplicity can be, in science for example, or in other places, I think in games, especially in the kind that take a lot of time from you, simplicity only makes the brain slack and in time causes people to lose what I'd call 'brain mobility' - the ability to have a keen sens and an agile mind at all times.
You could argue that it's just a game, but my argument is exactly against that. I think games can be something more and I'm against streamlining in games having that thought in mind. Spending hours and hours with an activity that doesn't add to your capacities is not the greatest thing, especially if you aim for development. Even so I still play some of them, and many others the same. That's why I hope games would one day become a great relaxing experience, that also enhances each individual's capacities in a way or another, a lot like a book or a good movie maybe.
i have to admit far cry 3 is a great game, a bit overrated but still a very great game, but to me personally dishonored is GOTY of 2012, the main protagonist is more interesting, the enviroments is more interesting, the story is the best in many year's, the gameplay is very responsive and smooth, the freedom of game is what fable only wanted to be, the stealth action is far better then AC3 or hitman absolution COMBINED, the voice acting is perfect and the soundtrack is very great too... i must say that far cry 3 soundtrack and graphics are better then the one of dishonored but that doesen't make it a better game! it was unfair to say that far cry 3 is better then dishonored, compared to others yes it is better but not better then dishonored.... still humans are different from one another so i respect your opinion, even if i don't agree for what you said about being better than dishonored
is my grammar making you angry or my opinion? , you dush!
@izikon Your grammar is fucking atrocious you don't deserve an opinion. Far Cry 3 has been over hyped far too much, the winner should be the Walking Dead without a doubt.
@pelvist You can't just go and insult something and then go back and complement them that is just idioic. It is like if I just go to a Walmart and scream at their employees saying that you are destroying small businesses, and then two minutes later I go back and say you are all doing a great job keep it up. In the end you look like a hypocrite and an idiot.
@pelvist @Taffy872 There's not much content in Planetside 2, there's no true objectives, the feeling of accomplishment is quickly diminished, and all the items you buy from the store look the same. They need to add random events, or any MMO type mechanic to keep gameplay interesting, and the world interesting. Plus it's not optimized very well yet.
@Taffy872 Yeah its called a typo, and how was it rediculous or in any way backing up Gamespot? It was an EXAMPLE, get it right next time. Look whos calling who an imbecile lmfao!
@pelvist @UltraredM You truly make me wish that there was a dislike button. You are an imbecile. You originally complain about GameSpot's editors, and then someone counters you and you reply backing up GameSpot. Please stop posting the most idiotic comments and think your thoughts through.
P.S. "I think you need to think your through", is probably the worst combat ever, as it is complete nonsense and is redundant overall.
@poster012 I agree with you, and I think your point of view is accurate.
Life tends to be like that. It's hardly ever white or black, but more usually its that mid tone of gray.
There is a number of perspectives in which we can approach this discussion. I'm a fan of complexity in storytelling and I'd like to see that more in games...a lot more. I like complexity in gameplay, but not over the limit when it becomes annoying.
A good example for me is DIshonored, that has enough gameplay complexity to make it enjoyable. It also has a nice universe, pretty interesting and a decent story, although I must admit I'm not very happy with it (has much more potential).
To sum it up, complexity is good to keep you engaged, simplicity is good to keep you on the track and going, and at the end of the day the mid way is indeed the way to go. A way that I think GW2 didn't follow all that accurately, because imo the devs chose to make a game more accessible for the masses, which I don't agree with (it's ofc just a personal PoV).
Btw, thx for the talk. Was quite enjoyable and I had the chance to 'collect' an interesting perspective that I will remember.
@Storyz Don't misunderstand; I'm not saying that things need to be simplified. I'm saying that recognizing when things don't need to be complicated can be good thing. An example would be the way that Skyrim was "streamlined" from Oblivion. I think they did a fantastic job; they cut out many of the needless elements, yet retained most, if not all, of the depth that Oblivion had. And in some ways, I think Skyrim was a deeper game. Mind you, I'm not comparing it to Morrowind. I never played it, so I can't really comment on it; and, from what I hear, it's deeper than both Oblivion and Skyrim.
My favorite types of games are the ones which appear to be simple, but have much more going on. A minute to learn, a lifetime to master, as they say. I suppose chess would be a good example of this. Chess, at its core, is a very simple game, yet it's deeper than many other board games with pages of rules.
Yes, streamlining can be bad, but I've come across too many people whom are simply anti-streamlining, and cannot even formulate an argument as to why they don't like it... other than "they dumbed it down", with no follow-up reasoning. Like many polarized issues, people tend to take one extreme side or the other. I think this is definitely one of those cases where there can be a sensical middle ground. I guess if I were to sum up my point, it would be 'don't make things more complicated than they need to be'.
@Bumblebee1138 just flag that jerk
Seriousely? I heard better come backs from a 5 year old. But ofcause if you're even younger, it's good. :P
