I agree completely, that along with the RPG elements of character building will keep this from being like any other mid 90's side scroller. The breaking mechanic also encourages using different blades of different specials and properties to keep things fresh throughout. Vanilla Ware has done a great job with this one, I would stack this up against any 3D hack n slash title.
I'm glad they have that feature where swords weaken overtime. It adds tremendously to the challenge and prevents the whole thing from being a formulaic button-masher.
