The Retron 5 console from Hyperkin lets you play old Nintendo and Sega games in new and exciting ways, but it needs additional work in order to reach its full potential.

I just beat Super MArio Kart on my zsnesw.
I was thinking about the Retron 5, but then again I can get much more from PC emulators. My Pc is already hooked up to my tv through HDMI so...

Allow me to make that snide comment that nobody wants to see, but everyone needs to hear:

All of the issues laid out in this review? They could easily be one time problems that the reviewer had with the system because they forgot to clean their cartridges or even check to see if said cartridges had any issues. If the cart is old and it hasn't been cleaned in a while, there is every chance that it won't be recognized. Unless the reviewer comes out and says "I was able to play this game on my SNES just fine last week," there is no way of confirming that any issues actually exist with the console. I'll wait until the console actually comes out and decide for myself....being that Gamespot seems to be the only one having any kind of issue whatsoever with the Retron 5.

Waiting for Retron 6 or 7...

To all those emulator and pirates lovers here this is not for you. This machine is built for serious collectors so stop calling them stupid for supporting this console.

$140 + insane prices for some classic cartridges on Ebay = a fortune.

PSP emulation with TV output works like a charm for me. But thanks anyway.

By Nintendos logic - this console has bigger library than PS4 and bone combined, so it will be successful

The console doesn't have Nintendo 64 games.

When they will release a console with Nintendo 64 games

It might be an interesting deal.

Have all of that and more on PC so, pass.

yeah i really dont see the point of this most carts are really old and batterys have died ans leaked inside them so alot of cartridges wont work anymore and that will only get worse as time goes on, if it could play roms it would be perfect, but like others have said you can do all this for free on your pc, and 1st big problem is no D pad and for a console that all games were designed to play with a D pad its just stupid really

Not worth.

You can do everything mentioned + 1000% more with a modern PC.

$140 for the convenience of having it in a small package?, what convenience? it's half-baked & doesn't over deliver to even make it a buying consideration.

Looks better than that overpriced VCR from Microsoft and it has bacwards compatibility for many systems. Sold!

Why the hell would anyone buy this overpriced pos?

All this is possible on PC, and you don't need an Uber machine to play such old games.

Really cool, but i will stick to emulator and roms.

@mr_nee Why does it matter what Nintendo believes here? It doesn't necessarily apply.

@snk0610 I think it's an interesting deal already, but yeah, that'd be cooler.

@westsiderz28 Although I wouldn't expect them to ship it with the ability to play ROMs, I would at least hope they put little to no effort into locking the system down from being rooted/hacked/whatever.

@whocaresrly I was going to say something similar, though I can totally understand a $140 price tag and there is a certain group of people that would buy it.  However, with issues like not even letting you select the game when it doesn't recognize it, that seems like a deal breaker.  A lot of people who pay for something like this want it to just work, and while I can understand technical difficulties like that (it would prob be impossible for it to always work), not having a manual option is pretty bad.  Without being able to manually tell it what game it is, all those extra features are lost.

@zoeyleft because they like retro gaming and they want to collect retro games without having to worry about using old consoles that are prone to having issues. Giving retro gamers the opportunity to not only avoid using their old consoles, but give them a lot of their consoles all in one convenient package that will allow them to save even those games that didn't have a save feature while also upgrading the video/audio quality at the same time (takes a breath) is a no brainer. If you don't get it, that is your own fault.

@phrasesound Some people would rather play the original games with the original controllers. This console allows them to do that and gives them basically the same functionality that a PC would. You don't seem to understand the concept here...for Retro gamers, this is like the high end product that does everything they've ever wanted with original retro game cartridges.

It's very important factor to consider.

Some of the best and the most classic consoles games

Are games from Nintendo 64 console.

snk0610

@Stoudman @snk0610 Nintendo 64 was a great console.

Yes it wasn't as successful as Super Nintendo or Nintendo.

That doesn't change the fact that it was a great system.

It has Super Mario 64. one of the best Mario games.

This game was revolutionary and set the standard

For other 3D platform games.

Nintendo 64 had also other many great titles.

Nintendo 64 is the only cartridge based console

That can present full 3D graphics.

It is also the most advanced which means

Games on it will look the best.

And another important thing -

Besides Nintendo 64 the Retron 5 also doesn't have

Compatibility with Neo Geo and Sega Master System games.

And I think that retro system

should have Compatibility with all the cartridge based

Retro consoles.

You don't have to agree with me.

That's my opinion.

@snk0610 Okay, I am tired of the younger generation selectively looking back on the N64 as if it were some great achievement. The fact is that aside from a few great first party titles and an even smaller list of third party titles, the N64 actually wasn't that great. In fact, Nintendo STRUGGLED to get developers to make games for the console because it wasn't as easy to develop for as the Playstation was. I know that the rose tinted glasses of nostalgia can make things seem great when they really aren't, but let's try to keep things in perspective here.
