I've been playing HoI-HoI2-HoI3 since 2002 and the main complaint I and nearly everyone has each time is the AI. I have tinkered with it a bit myself over the years, and i've added my own events by the hundreds in HoI2 but it's only added very little to the satisfaction of the game. There are some good mods out that really have helped the AI but the vanilla game AIs are just god awful. If they put out an expansion -- JUST AI then I would buy it up for HOI3 in a heartbeat. But no, they seem to want to add new features each and everytime and the AI gets very little attention. The game series has tons of potential but my god if they could ever nail down a really good challenging AI it would be the best strategy game of all time. I realize the difficulty with ten thousand provinces in the world and all the units behaving as they should and working together but hey a man can dream.
Hopefully they'll improve Theatre AI. The combat system in HoI 3 was a pain, because the AI Automation couldn't handle theatres properly (yes even when patched and running Semper Fi). Unfortunately that was only one of the problems. HoI 3 was (and to an extent is) such a mess it will take more than just this expansion to get it to HoI2/AoD quality. At least For the Motherland will be a proper expansion. Paradox still has a ways to go nevertheless.
Guys question. I'm a big campaign series and John Tiller fan, would I like HoI 2 or 3? Looking at them on Steam now, 3 looks more developed, but I know 2 was supposed to be great, which should I try first?
In the original I once played as Finland, but I was so dismayed when Germany got bogged down so easily, they couldn't even get as far as Baltics. I had taken all of Karelia and had St. Petersburg surrounded, but Germany was still struggling to take Kiev in 1943. Thanks anyway, Paradox, you're still one of the few who know how to make a proper strategy game.
Ya know, I can never get through an actual game. But like Stardock, these guys put their hearts into it. I will keep buying...
