Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft Open Beta Review
With its addictive gameplay and satisfying presentation, Hearthstone is one open beta that should serve as a model for all others.
Hearthstone cool in its own way, but if you are looking for a serious card game there is only Magic. MTG has been developed and tuned for over 15 years. With over 25,000 cards there is no limit to deck building creativity and strategy. Hearthstone was fun for a low stress, low reward alternative to MTG, but I grew bored of it soon. Its too repetitive, and it lacks any kind of deck building skill, since the most powerful cards and strats are obvious to anyone.
True, more cards will give birth to more strats but this will happen very slowly. The good news is that it is totally free...but that is also a coffin nail for the game. When your digital goods have no real value, no one cares about them. This is one thing MTGO does right, it preserves the value of virtual cards.
I've never played a card game like this, but it looks interesting. I'm a little apprehensive about the learning curve though, having no previous experience with the way these games work.
This is a truly great game. Well worth the investment of time, and thankfully, not too demanding for an investment of cash.
That said, I still think the WoW TCG by Cryptozoic (and formerly Upper Deck) was a far better game, that really needed an online client like this to carry it further. It is very awkward seeing so much of Hearthstone's artwork lifted directly from cards from the now-defunct tabletop game - including some once-very popular cards.
Either way, I can see myself returning to this game sometime in the future. Hopefully on other platforms. Would be perfect on Vita!
@robertleva nonsense. Poker is a much more serious game, would you not say? And the whole deck only consists of 52 cards [most variants] - with a possible 2.4m combinations possible in a game like 5 card draw. Magic is for people with way too much time, this isn't trying to complete with that. It's designed to be more casual, and fun! I'm sick of seeing mention MTG when talking about HS. If it's not complex enough for you, don't play it, stick to MTG, simples.
