GS News - Xbox One’s ‘Diverse” Lineup Touted; Destiny Costing $500m!
Find out how many copies of Destiny Activision need to sell, what Microsoft are planning for E3, and which game was pulled from Steam Early Access!
Microsoft E3 show : )
GTA V has only been on PS3 and 360 so far, but Destiny is currently be released only for XBox One and PS4, which haven't pushed nearly 15 million consoles between them so far worldwide, so that magic "15 million copies of Destiny to break even" number is not reachable.
Not yet, at least. The consoles have been release for barely half a year, and I can see Destiny pushing some console units. That's why I'm holding out on jumping to the next gen (that, and I don't have a job).
It's not a stretch to see Destiny easily hitting 15 million copies and breaking even within a couple years, and that 500 million is being dispersed ofver10 years. In 10 years, I definitely think that Destiny will be profitable.
Well I tip my hat to a company that instead of playing it safe, they make the effort to try to make a new IP, build a game around it, and do something that is really different in the marketplace. I mean, who the hell wants to see the new Godzilla movie.......anyone...... no really who does? I for one, am just getting tired of re-ran sloppy seconds of IP that someone else came up with.
It's like..... dating your no longer friend's ex-girlfriend. You think you are the first one at the dinner table, but we all know. You are getting leftovers.
Destiny is the hawt chick in the library that keeps making eye contact with you. Yes a 500m dollar hawt chick.
BTW Jess, you look stunning as ever. Wait a second.... Destiny is Jess?
This Destiny news kind of disproves what people on these forums have been shouting about for years now. Activision (supposed evil company) is investing a huge amount of money into a new IP (not just releasing a sequel). A highly anticipated, next gen, multiplayer experience is coming to consoles possibly exclusively and if not way before PC. A good portion of the royalties are going directly to Xbox and PS4 so any chance of bankruptcy is slim to none. Thank god we have companies like Activision and EA to keep this industry alive and we get something that isn't "a one trick pony" of a indie title. I am glad to be a gamer with great stuff like this coming down the road.
A huge portion of that 500m will probably be toward advertisement, events, and celebrity stuff e.g., Giancarlo Esposito. What is the game I'm thinking of that spent like 10 or 100 million on advertisement?
Also Destiny looks derivative and bland. I can't even imagine how do they expect to sell 16 mils.
anyone else notice the tab appear on 'Destiny' displaying the systems it will be available in?
PC was listed.
then again, it's already been said that destiny will be on PC, just not the same console date release. not sure if GS is confirming or its a GS mistake.
i'll just wait for an actual announcement for PC launch, but nice teasing us
What I would like to see from Microsoft. The same as any Xbot:
Another Halo, Gears of War, Forza Horizon, the next Forza Motorsport.
Another Halo with Cortana and a love story like in Halo 4
Cortana: "Don't make a girl a promise you can't keep."
Another Gears of War with an attractive red head like Sofia in Gear of War Judgment.
Forza Horizon was great fun, but you would know that from the demo.
Maybe Codemasters will have Dirt 4 come out with beautiful tracks and side kicks as in Dirt 2.
Thank you Jess.
Great show Jess.
Date mix up.
Being human is great for rapport with most people, except the opportunistically wicked. It makes you more likable. It's good to be human.
"Microsoft accused of creating Turn 10 to compete with Gran Tursimo."
Forza stomps Grand Tursimo into the ground. I agree with Microsoft. I've played Forza 3 & 4 and Gran Turismo 5. Forza 3 stomps GT 5 into the ground and Forza 4 does the same.
The Forza series is much more user friendly for upgrades, buying new cars, upgrading and downgrading your cars for events, ect. GT doesn't hold a candle.
On-line, Forza rules. GT can't compete.
For example, in Gran Turismo 5 they allow you to enter cars with a performance index of 600 to compete while all the rest are around 300 in career mode.
Gran Turismo 5 is good for it's Arcade Mode. I have no interest in GT 6.
I'll get Forza 5 when I get an X1. I'm interested in experiencing the haptic feedback triggers.
Forget Gran Turismo. It looks beautiful but that's about it.
They will definitely hit 15 million copies sold. Hell, Halo 2,3 and 4 hit over 12-14 million on 1 console. So Destiny releasing on 2 consoles that sold over 80 millions each and Xbox One/PS4 in the millions will definitely reach their even point and then some..
$500M is really pretty staggering. But I remember when they were making the movie Titanic and the press was having a field day over the ballooning costs. Nobody could believe it would ever make that money back and then of course it went on to make obscene profits well beyond that unheard-of development budget. Maybe Destiny will do the same... or you know, maybe it will be Waterworld instead.
I remember someone a while back arguing that the reason that Destiny wasn't coming to PC was because it had a limited budget. Yeah ok...... $500 Million is more than enough to include a PC version. This pretty much proves that the reason is because this game is suppose to be an mmo across multiple platforms so they just didn't want PC gamers playing with the console gamers.
Destiny is not a PC game (or at least not confirmed yet) so please dont say it is on the video. Everytime i see somewhere that destiny is coming to PC it gives me hope for 1 second but then i remember it is not confirmed yet and it crushes my heart :(
(no i dont own any consoles)
E3 should be good this yeah man, with next gen being around for a while now and still not a lot of AA games for them, Hoping for a lot of awesome announcements
Tomorrow's Show: whatever Phil Spencer puts on his twitter as the 'journalists' at GameSpot religiously follow his every bowel movement. You're great Jess, you can do better then GameSpot
All that money and they couldn't spew out a PC version of Destiny? TBH I don't they have much of a chance of breaking even with that investment.
Great job today, Jess, but surely they could give you a sick day to get over your illness before reporting the news again.
Glad that steam game got pulled, gives all early access a bad name.
I'm sure Destiny will succeed. Its got Peter Dinklage playing a small witty character, what more do you need? ...I wonder if Destiny's earth has whor*cough* I mean, warlocks, yes
Hopefully we'll hear more about Quantum Break at Microsoft's E3 event, I'm pretty excited for that game.
@thenephariouson Ryse 2 and Battletoads are good news
@SaintsRowLA Halo, Gears and Forza. I can't believe I forgot Forza. Over 10 years and multiple games. I am interested in seeing how they improve this game. Current previews aren't that interesting to me, so I suspect they are holding a trump card. Bungie made one of the best shooters in the last 10 years and Microsoft hasn't milked it to death, so I believe it's possible Destiny can hold up.
Also, it's Xboners now, not Xbots. People aren't mindless.
@SaintsRowLA The question wasn't which game was better it was if Turn 10 was created to complete with directly with GT. Which it was no matter what the M$ talking heads say.
Verbal abuse. You slam Jess' name in you attempt to make her feel better.
Even if you are not interested in Destiny I am not sure why you would want it to flop. If a game as high profile and expensive to make as Destiny fails it will hurt the game industry as a whole by making developers and publishers think twice before they invest in new IP. And that can only hurt us all as gamers.
@Zombie97 Yeah, thats probably gonna be huge at E3 this year!
Xbots were never mindless.
I was always happy to consider myself an Xbot because PS3 fanboys were usually mindless and pathetic.
Yes I owned both a 360 and PS3, a PS Vita, and now a PS4.
Being an Xbot is an honor because your not a PS3 fanboy.
You do have a valid point. Did they create it to compete. Perhaps so.
Buy Forza 3 & 4 (I don't know about 1 & 2) is so superior and GT 5 a flop that there is no competition or comparison.
Forza >> GT in upgrading, tuning, damage (if enabled), selecting the skill level of your competitors (off line), the amount of assists turned on or off, ect.
@SlyMC182 If the industry needs to correct itself by having the game fail, to produce better future products its a good thing. Supporting a game because its high profile and costly isnt a reason to support anything.
@_Roo_ Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
I have been a fan of the GT series since it first came out on the PS1 but I agree with you Forza 4 was a much better game than GT5.
If it's not on your radar yet keep an eye out for 'Project Cars' coming out in November. From the previews I've been reading it looks like it might be the new racing sim to beat.
Unlike GT and Forza it will be cross platform coming out on XBone, PS4, and PC (good for me because I'm skipping this gen of consoles for the foreseeable future and sticking with PC.)
Oh well, I do not think anything I can say is going to change your mind at this point so I will not even try. But as for me I am looking forward to playing the game. So nothing left to say I guess.
@SlyMC182 I understood, but its the same reasoning. A unknown IP always has risk. You dont support it just because its new, or not doing so may or may not cause other devs to not take risks.
Ill admit I haven't seen a ton of info on the game, but I really haven't seen anything to make Destiny a title I care about.
The industry has felt stagnant for years now. Its stuck in a rut of dumb-ing down everything to appeal to the most people possible, shoving online into everything, and getting as much money possible out of a franchise they possibly can through DLC ,micro transactions.
If the industry needs to see these big budget games fail to get the msg that they should get back to their roots, improve and build on the basics, then thats what needs to happen. I mean fuck, computer AI doesnt feel like its improved since the 90s in much of anything. Better content, atmosphere, immersion, AI. Really crafting a world that sucks you in.
Online games are EXTREMELY hard to do well, and I dont see Destiny being a flagship title on how to do a MMO/online only game right. Being a sci fi shooter to boot makes it sounds even worse. Though I guess I imagine too many damage soak enemies that make me feel like im shooting BBs at everything.
I think you may be misunderstanding my point. I am not saying anyone should support a game just because it is high profile or expensive to make. And if a game fails it in no way guarantees that other games made after it will be any better. I am just saying that if Destiny flops it will make other companies think long and hard before they invest in new IP and I think that is not a good thing for the health of the gaming industry. We may disagree on this point and that is fine it is just my personal opinion.
