40% of current xbox 360 and PS3 gamers world wide (based on recent survey) play without an internet connection. I do have an internet connection at home but it does not mean I feel good about leaving a significant number of gamers in the dark who do not have the internet. Also, I travel for a living and travel with my xbox 360. Sometimes the hotels have miserable internet connections and i want to be able to play offline.
Most kids can't pay $70 for every game they play and typically loaning, trading, and borrowing games from friends is a great way to try games out for free. Half the games (or more) I played growing up were from borrowing games from friends. If having the always on requirement keeps people from trading games, then that is a show stopper for me.
The keypoint for me on making a decision on the next console are:
1 - must be able to play offline
2 - must be able to play used games
3 - be under $500
4 - multiplayer games to have an increased number of player (more than typical 12 vs 12)
Anyone agree? Would like to hear anyone else's perspective on this...
My internet connection is never down, no.... I have a steady 60 mbit/s connection 24 hours a day without data limit. Personally I couldnt care less.
But thats not the same all across the world. Still think its a bad idea for a console developer to do.
The problem is not that users aren't always connected, but that those services suck and can't be properly maintained.
I mean even a powerhouse like WoW needs weekly maintenance , but a one year old single player game is not worth the money to maintain, so with this kind of thing your games will last for a year or so, and you will be unable to play them every time the service is fucked.
A lot of people are ready and able to use an always online console, they just don't want to on principle, because it serves no purpose for consumers.
@bdiges I think if the next generation platforms should be always-on playing games is going to be a hard job ! Just remember the problems we have (or may just some gamers have) for playing multiplayer games in online mode ! now you have all of this for all the time ...
I agree 100%..right now until we get the facts about Xbox 720 I am heading over to the PS4 because the Nextbox is no longer about games, but everything else. I want a gaming machine to be a gaming machine, and I like the games this tme around with sony compared to Xbox which is Halo and Gears of War....which I hate both games.
@bdiges The PS4 does follow the first three, though its a small maybe with the third.
The fourth I couldn't care less, did you mean something like MAG
